Praetorians

Praetorians is mostly just fighting and trying to control villages. Its not that much of a strategy game. In Praetorians you can control either the Romans or barbarians. This game is like Celtic Kings: Rage of War but when you make troops you make them in units like 30 or 12 instead if just 1. The units in Praetorians can have formations like the testudo so it kind cool to watch troops march instead of running around like an angry mob. There is a pretty long Roman campaign. In this campaign you travel across the ancient world as the Roman army with great generals like Caesar, Crassus, etc. The sad part is that in this game generals, Centurions, etc. can't fight and are just there to get in the way so keep them in the back of your army. The campaign are based on Julius Caesars conquests and every several campaigns you unlock, you get a cool 2minute movie. Overall this game is pretty good if you like action and fighting and like jumping right into war without a second thought 'cause these barbarians are pretty fast.

Buy this game. The best RTS

Praetorians

This game is probably the best RTS I've tried (then again, The Battle for Middle-Earth II wasn't half-bad). The only problem is that it's been discontinued by the manufacturer, and the bad graphics ruin a good game. On the upside, this means that the only thing stopping this game is your operating system. Virtually every version of Windows can run it. So despite what you may have heard (be it other reviews or whatever) you should buy this game!!!

Some gamers have been hard on this game since the advent of Rome Total War but as far as a fun rts games go this game delivers a nice bang for the buck
If you like the Age of Empires this rendition of Roman Imperialism is great!
Sound and graphics are cool and charmingly accurate.

Pretty but simple

I had this game for almost a week before I sold it to EB Games (when they were still buying used PC games). If you're looking for more of Rome: Total War just get the expansion pack, not this. The graphics are nice, but the gameplay is so limited that I felt like I was watching someone else play. The units were way too small and the controls weren't very fluid. Having never been a fan of stragedy games before, I went on the prowl for some after Medieval: Total War but found that Total War games are the only ones I like. Some others like the technical aspects of campaigning in other games, but I'm more of a battle map player. So if you loved Total War, stick with it. Stay away from similiar games.

Standard RTS - Spicey Flavor!

As far as Real-time strategies go this game is pretty standard. You assume the role of various figures during the time of the Roman Empire: it's formation, during, aftermath, etc... and take on various missions... Standard RTS formulas here, nothing new...

Graphics & Sound:
- The graphics are outstanding in this game. They are not overly done to hog system resources but they look great. Unit animations and environmental terrains are nicely rendered and make battles fun to watch.
- The music & sound effects are well done and fit with the time period and on-screen action. No complaints; nothing earth-shattering but nicely done.

Gameplay:
- There are some good improvements and refinements to the controls in this game. All the standard RTS devices are in place: control groups, formations, etc... The methods for organizing armies and issuing controls is fluid and easy. This game succeeds in keeping the management of your forces, outposts, etc intuitive and simple.
- Battles are well-done and aside from being visually stunning the action is fairly easy to coordinate. There aren't any complex moves that are needed to play - usually just point and click. Any effects of leaders, etc during the game is easily available by tips and hints from the game or in buildings.
- if you enjoy themed games then this one will do justice to the Romanesque style. The uniforms and armies look great and the story and style of gameplay feels right.

Performance:
- the game runs very well without any glitches that I experienced. There were no unexpected graphic problems or sound anomalies that I experienced on two different machines. If your PC meets the requirements for the game you should be fine.
- as always adjust options in-game to optimize performance or quality as desired (tune down quality options for better performance if the game runs slowly); check for video & sound driver updates; and disable any background programs like virus scanners if you experience gameplay issues.

Take care

Enjoyable

I admit that I haven't finished the game yet but I've been enjoying playing it the last couple of days.

Basically you command legions of the Romans. Archers, legionares, horsemen etc. On a terrain you have to beat the enemy.

The units all have their special abilities, it's best to have spearman at the front to stop the enemy, horsemen to do quick attacks and archers for long range attack. Because of differences in heights it is important to have archers on higher positions.

This all makes for fun. The graphis are really not great but I think most strategy-games players like me are not really interested in that. The sounds are fun and it has good historical accuracy with the names of all the tribes and their leaders.

Worth the low price

A sweet game

This game was over all very fun. The graphics are pretty good and the gameplay is awesome. It is a game that will last you a good long time. It is one of those games that you will be stuck on a level and come back and win and get sucked back into it. You can command the egyptians, the gauls or the romans. The campaign is very fun. The skirmish is very fun. You can make up to eight different computer players and choose who is an ally and who is an enemy. I reccomend it.

Some have speculated about whether this game was of brilliant quality. Well, they were dead right. The graphics and gameplay of Praetorians are absolutely Phenomenal. If you are a fan of any sort of war game at all, then you will love this to bits. It has panache about that is like no other game I have ever played. Absolutely superb!

Waste of Time and Money!

The Graphics are very poor. You cannot control Game speed and cannot pause the Game. Worst of all you cannot control your Units.

This is supposed to be all about Units, not managing an economy so as to produce Units. You just fight. The strategy lies in using the right Unit in the right place, but because of the poor Game interface and the horrible bottleneck Battle Maps , it is chaos once the fighting starts. Your units run all over each other and you end up with your Archers charging out in front.

Add the fact that if you are a Single Player going up against the Computer, it is useless to scout the Dense Dark Forests because your computer generated enemy will simply disappear and pop up in another place. There are even arrows flying at you which do not come from any enemy unit. They are computer generated.

There are Walkthrus online, but no viable Community Chat/Help because no one participates.

In short, save your money! I just ordered Rome: Total War which is what I should have done in the first place!

Many sleepless nights later...

This is an amazing game. The detail is super and the gameplay is straight forward and engaging. The level of control is not in the same level as Age of Empires or Warcraft - but if you're playing these kinds of games you really need not be concerned with farms and food and all that other Simcity kind of stuff. This game will give you what you're looking for - plenty of war, plenty of units and the quickest time into battle. If you've been around at the time of Broderbund's Ancient Art of War (1987-88) - you'll definitely like this game because it has many elements of that original game and amzing graphics to boot.
