Uninspired, boring game play

ok. Most of us expect some cliches when playing a FPS. It's part of the genre, fair enough, but there is no excuse for unispired level design, creatures, lame enemy A.I. and boring game play. Do the graphics look nice? Sure. Is the sound decent? It's ok. It won't scare the wits out of you like System Shock 2 or Doom, but it'll do. Is it fun? Absloutely not. Most of the attacks can be avoided by side stepping (strafing). The enemy is far from engaging and the levels have a rehashed "boring been there done that" feel to them ...
Really a Starship Trooper game!

Before you can fight monsters, you have got to fight all the bugs in just installing this stupid game. It took me 6 trys because of freezes and having to reboot. About a hour latter when I got it loaded. AfterI down loading a giant 49 mb patch to get it to work. Now when I try to start it, I getting the same error. "cd/dvd emulation software has been detected. Please disable all cd/dvd emulation software and re-start game" After disableing clone cd I still get this error. What a crap. This may be a cool game if I could get it to work. My advice: ONLY BUY THIS GAME IF YOU CAN RETURN IT EASY WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!!! If you are a sucker, buy it from me off of ebay (I got it as a gift) plus I am a sucker for asking for Dreamcatcher's inferior software.

This game has no clever plots or story lines. What it does have is some of the best FSP action so far this year. Pure mayhem as you rampage through level after level of the undead. The music and sound tracks also kick.
This is a run and gun title where you must run to survive. You stay in one place to long and your fresh meat for hells minions.
I like this game much better than Far Cry. Far cry is way to hard to be much fun, even ran on the easiest level.
This game may have beat Doom 3 to the punch.
This pure first shooter action at it's best. If your looking for puzzles go play MYST.
Fun, mindless gameplay

Sometimes it's nice to play a game that has you check in your brain before playing - this is Painkiller in a nutshell. On my avg system - it has surprisingly good frame rates (w/ an occasional slow-down e.g. Opera House and Asylum Attic) on 800 x 600 res w/ high textures. Enemy variety is above average but their IQ is sorely lacking. You can basically "bunny-hop" around a room to get them in a nice "parade" of sorts - then turn around, bunny-hop and blow their heads off - rinse and repeat

Quake fans, buy this game
doom fans, buy this game
serious sam fans, dont think twice. buy this game.
this game is about as "mindless" as Unreal Tournament, which is to say: simple on the surface, but REQUIRES strategy to be good.
this game has to be deeper than most think, as it is the only game fatal1ty (worlds #1 ranked gamer) has lost at :(
so to recap: if you like games like Quake and Serious Sam, buy this game before you pay the rent. And, its a little deeper han you might think (multiplayer is, anyway haha)
Gonna be a classic...

Ah, how refreshing is this game? What better way to wind down from a long day at work than to watch some basketball (March Madness does start soon, forgive me) and mindlessly pin guys against a wall using a 5-foot stake fired from a stake gun? There's few better ways. Painkiller is, in every right, a first person shooter. Notice I did not say tactical shooter, as this game simply requires collecting enough ammo to blow everything away. And since ammo is plentiful in this game, feel free to blast away.
The main reason you should get this game is for the level design. It sounds hokey, I know, to base my justification to buy a game solely on the levels, but the design in these levels is exactly what makes the game as a whole fun. I'd recommend picking up the game just to see it's interesting depiction of Hell and the levels in that chapter leading up to the final boss fight.
As said before, this game does have it's faults. There are times it tries to be something it definately can NOT pull off. Really, what do you expect out of a story like this?... A man dies in a car crash and spends years in purgatory, doing Heaven's dirty work until he finally gives up and says he wants out. He's put on a last mission by a mysterious angel who only plays the role of telling you where to go next, and you meet up with Eve (yea, like as in Adam and Eve, where's Adam? I don't know, doesn't matter) and she's supposed to help you out in some way but really doesn't outside of getting kidnapped and moving the game along into the last chapter. Don't you think you're brain gets racked enough trying to keep up with the story? They should have scrapped it, yea cutscenes are cool, but just make some generic goal, like stop Satan, and add in action screenshots of our man kickin' butt and takin' names instead of being all pissed off at an angel.
Thankfully, as said in some other reviews, the main part of the time spent in this game is moving from area to area and blasting things away, which is very fun. The Havok physics engine is superb and really makes blowing stuff up satisfying. Use it to play little mini games, like how many times can I get this guy to spin in the air before he hits the ground? Or my personal favorite, let's kill this guy, drag this other guy over and kill him so he lands in a very inappropriate position relative to the first guy.
Either way, I highly recommend this game, especially for the price you can get it.
IS this going to be fun? Well i dont know But i have idea

I downloaded THE DEMO and played it for the first 30 minutes absorbing pleasant physics engine good visuals and STEAK GUN which is just plain fun but that all the fun went away and levels became a drag(...). Why? Because they are big and you cant save!YOu cant? Yes you cant it better be a demo glitch or something or i am not going near this one. Fighting is repatative and tiring all you basicly need is a button to run backwards and a firing button. Yep demo is good at FIRST, game beter get on the right track and have some release dates pushed back or its perfect recepie for disaster.
Lets hope it is not going to suck!
If only it worked....

[Boot-Crash,Boot-Crash...] Its the Painkiller Polka!
That's what happened after I installed this mess. I knew that I was in trouble when the package contained 3 CDs and there was a message on the box stating: "Whoops, we messed up, use CD #3 to start the game, not #1...Duh." Uh-Oh!!
And of course, after installing this game, then downloading the patch (ALREADY, the developers have a patch? Why does'nt Dreamcatcher just finish testing the game before they start selling it??) the darned thing still does'nt work.Worse yet, its an exception that is not handled since there is no error message: Just "Boot" then "Crash"!
I know what you are thinking: "Well, you must have a bad system, it works fine on my machine." First, I have over 300 games loaded on my PC - from Microsoft Pinball to Dead Man's Hand - and they all work. I have the latest version of DirectX loaded and my video card is an 128 MB ATI 9000 series, my sound card is an Audigy 2 and my computer has a Gig of RAM and it is a P4 2.5 Ghz.
But that really is'nt the point. I expect a complete game when I plunk down some serious $$ for one; not some patched-up mess. I should'nt have to rebuild my entire PC to run this game when over 300 others (including games released in the same month as "Painkiller") work perfectly.
This is just a sloppily slapped-together piece of code. Don't waste your time on it until they fix ALL the bugs.

This game is totaly retro. Yes, the monsters are mindless and will chase you in single file instead of flanking you; Yes, if you can run backwards and shoot you can kill all the monsters chasing you; And yes, this game is so 1993 but you know what? It's wonderful. If you like the old school Quake, Serious Sam, and Doom genre, you'll love this game.
Some game these days are too complicated to figure out. If you like strategy then this game isn't for you. The fun factor of this game is top notch. If you're looking for some mindless blowing up of monsters after a long day then let it rip :)
