This game is most similar to Serious Sam than any other game I can think of except whereas SS is mainly in large open spaces with hundreds of opponents, this one is more commonly in large rooms with dozens of opponents. That's OK - it's pretty much what I expected.
But what I don't like is the way you have no way to stack items except to repeatedly hit them randomly until they fall the way you want them. Then you better quick save because as soon as you try to jump on them they'll fall down and you'll have to start again. All the surfaces except the floor seem very slippery and moving on them is another exercise in frustration. I quit at the military base because I didn't spend $20 to waste 30 minutes randomly hitting tanks to stack them up so I could move on.
Most of the secret locations and holy items are almost impossible to reach unless you are prepared to spend a ridiculous amount of time on it. I'm not - I have a life - and it doesn't include this stupid game.
Extremely Imaginative Fun!!!!!

I just don't get the negative reviews here. This game is the most imaginative, creative, compelling and just plain fun in a long time. The graphics are amazing, the music is fantastic, and it is definately not repetitive or boring, as some have said. There are MANY levels to go through, and it is not all shoot 'em up, though that is the most fun. You have to find hidden items, secret areas, complete a level in a given time, etc.
This game is the most fun I've had since the original Wolfenstein 3D, and that was a long time ago. I guess I'm more old school when it comes to gameplay. I enjoy minimal controls ( jumping, shooting, etc.) rather than all the hard to master (strafing, leaning, etc.) controls so I can ENJOY THE GAME.
Forget Far Cry, Doom3.
This is the one.
Could have been named Doom 3!!

I played this game with some reservations. After all everyone has been there with the first person shooter blow em up style games. Once I started playeing though, I couldnt stop. The graphics are one of the best I have seen in a fps. The audio is very good, and the enemies in this game are quite amazing to see. The variety of different demonic and monstrous enemies make the shooting interesting. If this game makes John Carmack nervous he rightly should be. This game could have easily been named Doom 3 and I wouldnt have thought twice about it. From the screenshots I have seen of the real Doom 3, I am actually a little nervous myself as they are not all that impressive. I was more impressed by the screenies of this game than Doom 3 but I will not judge it until it is released supposedly next month in July. (yeah right)

There is one thing I can say about Painkiller,it friggen rocks! The phisics engine is so cool and the gore is to the max for any parents reading. But three things are wrong with it.One,crapy story line. Two,enemy AI(not that it's bad,the enemies only tactic is to run after you,no hiding behind corners and things like that).Third, the game is too straight forward.Well,if you like mindless pure "shoot-anything-and-everything-that-moves-gothic-action", and you don't have high blood presure, than Painkiller is the game for you.
A change - it runs deeper then you think

Finally a change from the repetitive, military style FPS!! What a nice break. This game may look silly at first glance, just like Serious Sam was, but its no Serious Sam. The game runs deeper. The story is definatly cool, not much of a story, but enough to keep you going through hell's minions. Now, I saw a couple of review complaining about, puzzles etc etc. The level design, is quite linear too, but when it comes to secrets, one must truly show his worth and reflexes. Applying the complex 'bunny hopping' technique to enhance speed and jumping heights, to out maneuver your enemy, reach hidden areas etc...
Its not just: "point away from face and fire", one must adopt a combat technique to actually get somewhere in this game.
Weapons - mastering the combo weapon moves is also a key to the survival of PK, at first I saw 5 weapons, and thought I'd get tired of them quick, but I was wrong, its the 4th time I'm completing the game, and believe me, you wont get bored of the weapons.
Visuals are stunning, havoc2 rules, bosses are stunningly detailed and huge. Not to mention fun. The think I loved most in PK is the level design. All levels are unique, and different, its like a new setting each time. (the Asylum is stunning...) The fact is that 'PCF' did not use the same level texture twice in the whole game, so each level has its OWN textures, to make sure they are unique.
Music - 5 star, perfect music setting for every level, and action scene. And professionally done, not the typical digital music made with cheap sound effects.
Buggy but Fun

I love the level design, the action, the graphics. It's just fun mindless killing. That would be great and all, but the game's save/load feature is riddled with bugs. I made it a point to install the latest patch (1.3) before playing because I figured the bugs it shipped with would be patched, but it still will only manage to load a save file 50% of the time. No, that doesn't mean I just have to retry twice for every save, it means on any given particular save, there will only be a 50% chance it's a good save, if it's broke it's broke, and will never load without crashing to desktop.
The plus-side is you don't really have to save. Beating a level only takes about 30 minutes, and the next time you start the game you can go on to the next level. It's saving in the middle of a game that's the problem.
Overall this is a nice change of pace from recent action games, and definitely worth a look. I can't edit my initial rating, but I think it's worth 3 stars, 4 if they fix the save bug.
Coulda been a contenda....

Great idea that is poorly executed. Game play not particulary inspired and background music is unbelievably annoying. Would benefit a lot by allowing main character to interact more with environment (i.e., crouch, pick up, throw, etc.). Secrets are ridiculously hard, both to find and to reach. If you love Serious Sam you'll like this game. However, if you are more of a Half-Life person, this title is likely to bore you.
Just... amazing.

This game is the perfect blend of the gory violence we saw from Serious Sam, the satanic ambience of Hexen, and the smooth gameplay from the original Unreal. The scenery is amazing. The bosses are challenging. And the weapons are very original. Yes, there are "only" five weapons, but each weapon has a unique secondary fire, and some weapons (like the painkiller weapon) has a combo attack.
The storyline is a bit iffy at times, but I thought it was all right. It's nothing to cry over. Besides, this game is the perfect cure for boredom, especially when you need a break from "predictable" games like Half-life 2 and Doom 3.

There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this game. Okay, wouldn't you agree that a good game can stand on its own regardless of how much it ages? There are so many other games like this that there is nothing original, I got about half way through level three before I called it quits.
Pros:
- Graphics
Cons:
- Extremely poorly done storyline, wouldn't have changed a thing without it.
- Shoot one enemy that blows up and scatters everywhere unrealistically then move on to the next to do the same.
- Atmosphere does nothing; I would've felt the same if the game was set to daylight.
- Enemies are lame, skeletons with swords? Monks with flying axes? Skeletons with a magical staff that annoyingly slows down your movement? Please.
- I love metal music, but the metal here grants no adrenaline rush what so ever. It's very soft and the music doesn't change.
Mindless action isn't always a bad thing... but this is truly as mindless as something gets. I think you have to have an empty skull and be really bored to be able to stomach this game, want some quality mindless action? Play Serious Sam 2 or Doom, forget this.

Admittedly interesting up front, after playing for even 20 minutes had me yawning.
Each fight is remarkably identical. Yes, the enemies are different looking, but it's the same door closing behind you and same 2-3 dozen monsters sailing in on you from all sides. The truly most annoying part of it is the exact SAME heavy metal music that plays during EVERY SINGLE skirmish. I mean, come on, is it too hard to have a few different tunes?!
The graphics are average at best. Games like Max Payne 2 and FarCry leave this one in a much lesser league. The physics of Painkiller are touted in many reviews, but they are remarkably basic when compared to a top-notch engine like in FarCry.
Weapons are unique looking and functionally interesting but don't do enough to help the game out.
Controls are limited (no crouching, lying prone, etc.). There really is no 'use' function or any cerebral challenges to figure out. The game leads you in a single direction and it gets remarkably boring and repetitive fast.
There are plenty of FPS games that blow this one out of the water. Several years ago, I may have been impressed with the visuals, but I still would have found the game dull to play. Borrow a copy to try out. I personally do not think it's worth even $10.
