As great as the reviews are of this game they miss one key element. It is not a FUN game. The ship movement is not just slow on the fastest setting it's depressingly slow. There is little to do while waiting for ships to move from point A to B. It was such a dissapointment after all the good press. I guess when you try to do too much you end up with too little.
dissapointed

this is the worst game EVER all it amounts to is a click fest on tiny unresponsive icons. You Cant really play the game in the total close up mode . ie: you rarely get to see the nice close ups of the ships.
The upgrade and tech trees stink and you cant build any thing , including the ships you need.
The game is not nearly as good as Galactic Civilations II.
I have spent about 12 hrs of last 24 trying to figure this loss out. al lyou do is respond to "pirate attacks", over and over etc.
DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! look for
Galactic Civ II on sale! It has many of the same features and works much smoother and more logically!

The game is fun and I have spent many hours playing it. The strategy was challenging at first, but once I got the hang of it, it seems the same strategy works just as well against difficult opponents as easy opponents.
I feel the diplomacy in this game is a bit tedious, and I found the game more enjoyable by locking teams and eliminating diplomacy, but others may enjoy that aspect of the game.
Overall, it is very enjoyable and has good replay ability, so I am giving it 4 stars. It is definitely a good strategy game which have been lacking in recent years.
A great game for RTS fans

Sins of a Solar Empire is a great game with a few tragic flaws.
The graphics are amazing- especially given the scope of the game. All the ships are well designed and have uniqe abilities. With the details set pretty high, they shine in the sunlight and generally look really good. The dynamic zoom is handy, and allows you to select any unit you want in about 1/2 sec. The empire tree on the left side of the screen is also a great way to manage the entire empire all at once. Resources are easy to understand and collect. Sins also adds culture to the mix. By building broadcast stations and spreading your influence, you can take over planets without bombing them to dust. As for the visuals, only the explosion and weapon effect detail leave something to be desired.
There is no single-player campaign, so if that's your thing, don't buy this game!
The random maps take A LONG TIME TO PLAY. My first game was a 14 planet (small) random map and it took me over 5 1/2 hour to complete. People have started games at the largest size (over 100 planets) and have been playing them as an ongoing project for months. If you like fast action and a flurry of clicking, this game is not for you. Sins is all about building a massive fleet and watching it obliterate everything- not frantically pressing special attacks.
The AI is decent, but nothing spectacular. Stardock is releasing upgrades to make the AI better. What's really annoying is that the computer players always seem to run from battle unless they have an overwhelming force. Also, there are space pirates who attack your empire on a regular basis. I find them really annoying, but they allow your capital ships to level up before facing another player.
Lastly, I have a pretty good laptop (Intel Core2Duo@2Ghz, 2gb RAM, NVidia 7300) and loading even a small map takes FOREVER. Literally, I start a map and walk away to do something else so I don't have to watch the bar inch across the screen. Once the game starts, it runs great though.
I gave this product 4/5 stars because 1)low effect detail 2)cowardly AI and 3)LOOONG load time
Overall, it's a great game I would recommend most to those who are into space RTS games, have a lot of free time, and like playing online.

Sins of a solar empire is for dedicated RTS gamers and RTS gamers only.
The game has no campaign mode, so don't expect a good story, which would have made it so much better. The music goes from okay to okay, its mediocore. The game play is just ugly, I should'nt have to say anything you saw for yourself on the gameplay pics they show you. What killed it the most was the tutorial modes. you will spending a long time just to understand combat, space mining, and planet taxation which is MIND BOGOLLING BORING. Sins was not fun for me and should'nt be, it had the potential to be great; if not wonderful. Hopefully EA will buy this company and give it a much need face lift.
Soooooooo Boring.....

I mainly play first person shooters and RPGs (the last two games I played were Mass Effect and Crysis, which I loved) but I enjoy RTS games as well. I spent lots of time playing Empire Earth, Age of Empires 2 and 3, Dawn of War, World in Conflict, and others. After seeing so many positive reviews for this game, I went out and bought it.
As soon as I started watching the intro I knew I had made a terrible mistake. The voice-over is awful and the story was uninspiring. Then I expected to start a campaign, something with a story. Instead, when I clicked Single Player, I was presented with a list of maps to choose from. Come on, they could make a little effort to draw me into this game. I started playing the first tutorial, and between the irritating voices that acknowledge your commands and the utter dullness of watching the ships sit still firing their little lasers until one blows up, I was sure that this was not a game that I would enjoy.
I played Sins of a Solar Empire for about ten minutes, and it was ten minutes too long. Apparently there are lots of people who like this game, but if you like the kind of RTS games I mentioned above, don't waste your time with this.
What this game has.

If your hoping for a story line give up now.
There is no story! That's the pig point, some of these reviews say a Si-fi noval. If you loved homeworld or hegamonia, or Nexus You will hate this game. When you start a new game it asks you to choose a configuration for the galixy (how many suns and there colors, planets are random) Then you hit start and it generates the map and you start with a planet and you start to build you move into other suns and mattering on the diffcualty you get attacked your forces get push back or you move forword bomb there plants or visa versa and then your done. DONE thats it pick the next one and then your off doing the same thing. You can make a random map but it's just like the other options. There's nothing to keep you playing.

SOASE is a fantastic game, stop hesitating and just get it. It is complex and engaging and really makes you feel invested in your empire. It is admittedly a little slow but there is never a point where you are bored, it is just that running such a huge and complex organization can't be done in seconds. The production values are very high and the graphics are gorgeous. Get this game!
Mediocre at best

I bought this game based on all the ecstatic reviews, comparisons to master of orion, etc, etc. The game is boring. It has a neat premise. It's the kind of game I want to play and want to like. One of the things I do like is that your ship crews gain experience.
It's basically a lot like MOO2, only the combat is boring. That's really what kills the game for me. The whole "buy off the pirates at the last second so they'll go kill the other opponents" is just retarded. The tech trees are pretty boring.
Basically, the game has all of the right elements. It's like baking bread. They have the yeast and the flour and the sugar and etc. It has everything bread should have. But the bread just isn't good. I want to like it, I want it to be delicious, but it's very bland.
The thing that kills it is the combat. It's boring. There's no action. It's completely formulaic. There's no real chance for a come from behind victory, or for you to design a ship to exploit an opponent's weakness. You just group up a bunch of ships and sit there and yawn while your ships and their ships slowly whittle away at each other. It quickly becomes a foregone conclusion who is going to win. There's no drama, or action, or thrill. It's boring and very repetitive.
Not at all like Master of Orion. The factions are also boring and uninspiring. Basically I'd go load MOO2 and skip this title. I applaud their effort and their desire to make this sort of game, but it just doesn't have the magic that makes a game great. Quickly forgotten.
I'D RATHER BE PLAYING EMPIRE AT WAR!

playing this game reminded me a little of playing SW Empire at War only worse. I quickly lost interest in this game and never finished more than a couple of levels. Maybe this game is better in Multi-player mode, but as far as single-player mode is concerned i'm gonna have to give it 2 thumbs down. Play Empire at War instead you will not be disappointed.
