hmmmm....what can i say this game is a blast but their is no campain mode or anything of the sort, all you do is play a map by starting off with on of three different races homeworld and buil out through a solar system making allies and destroying any civilization that doesn't agree with you...but that's a load of fun though and i enjoy it emensly
Pretty dang good

I could never get into Total War, and I haven't played Galactic Civ, but I loved Homeworld. And ever since Homeworld came out, I've been looking for another space rts to match it.
This is the closest game so far.
From the gameplay side, it's good. You start out with a home planet and a couple ships, and build up your empire by researching, building more ships, and colonizing adjacent planets. It can take some time getting from planet to planet, but fear not, as you can actually research an upgrade to warp between stars. The diversity isn't what it could be...most of the differences between the three races are cosmetic, except for the special abilities of the capital ships (which are a little like those from Warcraft III -- take power (antimatter) and need to be unlocked). Ah, and capital ships have experience. The game AI is alright, but gets better with every patch (1.04 right now).
From a technical perspective, the game is also pretty fun and good, especially for an indie game. The graphics are fully acceptable by today's standards. The mod tools are also apparently pretty good, given the number of mods available. Also, don't be put off by the publisher being Stardock, which noticeably publishes ObjectDesktop and WindowBlinds -- the company is remarkably forward-thinking in believing that pirates shouldn't be allowed to make decisions about games. Translation? There's no copy protection. Nor do you need the CD in the drive to play. And you know what? The game is STILL #3 in sales in its category on Amazon and has done remarkably well in general.
Word of disclaimer: I wouldn't say this game is only for "hardcore" players, but I would say that it's deep enough that unless you put some time into learning the strategies, tech trees, gameplay mechanics for the different races, you will be disappointed. Also, there's no single player campaign. Sad, to be sure, but that's just the way it is.
Anyway, if you're looking for a strong, deep space RTS to sink your teeth into, consider Sins of a Solar Empire.
Good for people who like RTS

SINS is a fun game that pits you against 1-7 opponents. You can play vs. people or computers or a combination. You can also team up and play cooperatively. The AI is pretty good, so adds a bit of challenge without just having the computer pump out tons of ships to compensate for terrible AI.
The built in game updater is handy since they send out a patch about once a month so far. I like the changes they have made so far.
Overall, the game is fun to play. I think if you aren't into RTS and strategy, you may get turned off by SINS. With the latest patches, you can speed parts of the game up (like ship speed) so the game doesn't drag on so long.
The only thing it lacks is a Campaign mode.

I have nothing but high praise for Sins of a Solar Empire in every category. The Graphics are top notch, the gameplay is both unique and intuitive, not to mention addicting! And the sound and music is spot on. The only thing that would make this game better would be a single player campaign.
RTS to the next level!

Sins is a 4X type game that encorporates real time strategy in a seamless and immersive gameplay style. There is nothing like it, but it I had to describe it, I would say it is kind of like Master of Orion/Galciv/Starcraft blended together into a whole new experience. The zoom ability lets you see the smallest craft in your fleet all the way out to the empire that you control - and each and every level can be hand managed if you like micromanagement, or placed on autopilot. Capitol ship abilities are awesome and make you want to control each and every one in your empire personally. Definitely one of those great games that you play on and on without realizing how much time has already passed.

Pros/Cons:
+Game is paced perfectly to allow new players and more experience players a level playing field
+Performance on mid-lower end systems is good (including laptops)
+Pre-generated maps are a ton of fun
+Extensive Auto-Saving (both online & offline)
+Big multiplayer community
+Stardock & Iron Clad Online commitment to continue to release updates & more content
+Custom Tools (Map generator/Extensive Map Building Tool/Extensive modding capability)
-No single player campaign
-Iron Clad Online could use some improvements to make it more user friendly
-Bigger maps/games can take a long time to complete which may put off players who want faster action rather than deeper strategy.
Very Impressive

Sins of a Solar Empire ("SoaSE") is an instant classic. It breaks new ground in the real time strategy genre by blending the broad scope of a 4X civilization-management game with the fine-grained space battles of a game like Homeworld. With the flick of your mouse's scroll wheel, you can go from looking at your empire of dozens of planets, all the way down to observing individual ships in your fleets, all rendered in beautiful 3D.
To be sure, SoaSE is a hybrid game - its battles do not have the depth of Homeworld, and it's civilization management doesn't have the level of micromanagement of a game like Civilization 4. But this is part of what makes SoaSE so brilliant. It blends both genres in a way that is manageable and extremely entertaining for the player with an interface that is intuitive and relatively unobtrusive. One of the great things about the game is that you can choose how fast or how slow you want it to play. For beginning players, in order not to get overwhelmed, the option to turn the game speed down is a life saver.
Graphically, the game is very high quality though not envelope-pushing. I am perfectly happy with the game's graphics, and amazed at how scaleable the engine is - it runs beautifully on my three year old Dell Inspiron with a GeForce Go 6800 at 1680x1050 with 2x Anti-Ailiasing. And the game has never crashed on me - not once.
If you're a fan of strategy - heck, even if you're not - you owe it to yourself to buy this game. It's top quality all the way.
Good - but not epic

The single player for this game is tricky, but it is also rewarding. This is an RTS that takes time, and is limitless for players who have an imagination - however, the game is slow and requires a lot of patience. The MOST important thing to know is that the multiplayer system is very buggy and very one sided. The Terran race of this game have researchable weapons with ranges that span across, not just solar systems, but galaxies. It reaches a point in which your fleet means NOTHING.
Massive scope and scale.

Great game with a massive scope. A flick of the finger zooms in to a single world. Two flicks in the other direction zoom you out to reveal several star systems.
Sound and graphics are both good. Graphics actually surpass expectations for such a wicked scale.
A few solid control changes would really improve the overall gameplay. But that is just an issue of stream lining.
Pretty big and deep (that's what she said)

This game is a lot of fun. My friend and I played on a small map for our first time and the game could have lasted about 2 days even after I knew I was going to lose. Its a very deep game, but a lot of fun if you like RTS's and science fiction. There is also a pretty large single player story campaign that is a lot of fun.
