Lets cut right to the chase. I love the game. The graphics are amazing, the story is gripping, and the gameplay is what it is-old school turn based JRPG. If you're into that as I am, you'll be hooked. The only gripe I have with the game is there are a few long stretches in the game where you CAN'T SAVE. A part in particular involved the death and funeral of a certain character. That part goes on for over an hour with no chance to save. Theres a few long story sequences and some mini games that happen during this stretch. Its important to the story, but when I should've been focused on that I was only thinking "I'm tired, when the heck am I going to be able to save and quit!?" This might be a minor nitpick, but I felt it was big enough to warrant writing my first review on here. Other than that Lost Odyssey is an amazing RPG that shouldn't be missed.
Thought I was going to love this game, but it wasn't meant to be.

This is a game I was very much looking forward to and was practically certain I would love based on the information and user reviews. I'm all about the story and the dream sequences sounded awesome, and the plot got great reviews from many people and sounded interesting. Also, I'm a fan of old school rpg's and even looked forward to the random battles and turn based combat. Unfortunately, this game just didn't do it for me and I have pretty much lost all interest in it.
By far the biggest disappointment for me is in the story. At first it really grabbed me and seemed intriguing, but unfortunately it lost most of it's mystery and intrigue quickly as major plot points and villains are revealed way too early in the game, leaving it pretty bland and cliche afterwards. I also found many scenes that were clearly intended to capture emotions forced, contrived, and just over the top, leaving me watching the screen with a sense of detachment from the characters. The dream sequences were also disappointing. While they are indeed well written and interesting to read, there is no real connection between these dreams and the game world, creating once again a sense of detachment. Also, the dream sequences frequently go into the same contrived and over the top attempts at emotion provocation, similar to the cutscenes. For me the story is where it's at with an rpg, and this one just doesn't do it for me.
I found the battle system to be ok, but that's probably because I like the old school style. I could easily see people not liking it based on it's simplicity, but it is what it is, and does the job. So in this regard the game is fine.
Music and sound left a lot to be desired in my opinion. None of the musical scores really clicked with me much, and the voice acting was so-so. One of the problems I also had was the continual reuse of the same music during the dream sequences, and how the tracks were always used during the same type of emotional setting during the sequence. After about 5 dream sequences you can almost know what's going on with the dream just by the music. To a certain extent there does of course need to be music to accompany a story, but the problem I am getting at is that after 10 dream sequences using the same set of musical tracks, it just gets predictable and grating.
Graphics are top notch, there is no denying that, the game is beautiful and the characters are gorgeous. Another point that I will bring up is that exploring cities can be pretty fun, with the multitude of hidden items and such.
This game has it's positives and negatives, but unfortunately for me the negatives outweigh the positives. I very much wanted to love this game, and expected to, but reality is what it is. Many people seem to enjoy the game, however, so if you're reading this review I wouldn't avoid the game simply on my opinions. Perhaps the game will connect with you, but for me it just wasn't meant to be.
Major problems for me, an early opinion

first i'd like to say that i still gave it FOUR stars so please don't take my negatives with too much weight: I hate to bash a game that we-rgp-fans so highly anticipated, but here are my major flaws with the game, I'll admit I've only partially played so far:
1. Very much like Blue Dragon as far as game play (ooo, they added the ring system and made the battles a little more interactive (which also personally i don't really care for). Everthing else from ring accessorizing, to gaining SP, to how you learn spells/buy spells, to checking every nook and cranny for hidden items (thank god no more 'nothings', to level up are the same as BD.
2. Loading times are ridiculous, each and every battle you will experience a wait for loading, plus of course any cut scenes or location changes and anywhere else i've forgotten to mention
3. Random battles are back! argh!
4. Maybe its my older TV, but the camera angles/view are horrible.
5. BIGGEST CON: If you've play it or read about it, you know its about a man, Kaim, who is an immortal who has lost his memories and he slowly starts to recover them in the form of DREAMS! I love cut scenes and cgi effects, however, these so-called-dreams, aren't wonderful cut scenes, but PAGES AND PAGES of paragraphs and paragraphs of words. It really takes my patience to the limit. I don't understand why they would have these 'dreams' not as video but as soooooo manyyyyy words!
6. They've put a limit on how many times you can level up in an area. Meaning: if you like to level up extra in some places anywhere, they've put a cap on it so that if you've fought their limit of say 15 battles in that area, on the 16th battle you won't earn any experience anymore. I can see where they are trying to keep the game hard and challenging, but leave that to the player, don't put in limits and capping - are we TEN years old?!
PROS:
1. Let me think... its beautiful and interesting and fun to play (which very frustrating at times) and suck-you-in plot.
2. The cons listed above aren't enough for me to stop playing, but i have considered it... lol!
3. The game does have a level of challengingness that I can appreciate, especailly after how super easy BD was.
5 Stars!

This game delivers if your a fan of previous installments of the Final Fantasy series. I Won't say much as there are some great reviews already, but if you liked the turn based fighting, strategic character skill development, and cinematic storytelling of Final Fantasy you will like this game as well.
More like Lost Month

For someone who still owns a copy of Final Fantasy VII and still plays it from time to time farming power sources and mind sources, this game is absolutely terrific. The game is a Japanese RPG of very traditional roots that are unabashedly paraded through the entire four disc journey. The thing about this game is that it is, truthfully, love it or hate it. Anyone who still remembers 1997 and all the fun they had planning strategies to defeat sephiroth or any other mega boss from any rpg during that time would absolutely love the new look of a classic mechanism. But, for anyone who doesn't look fondly back on those years, you most likely will not like it. The pace is slow, the story is epic, which means lots of reading and cut scenes, just about enough to make an fps enthusiast's head explode in anxiety. I've been playing it for over 80 hours and I'm about to beat the game after doing almost everything humanly possible to do in the game and I love it. I'll start playing the game and all of a sudden it'll be 2 in the morning. It's addictive and the fight system is unobtrusive. The only problem that I have about it is that the frame rate will occasionally slow down during transitions between fighting and not fighting and that not all of the sequences are voice acted. Overall, it's a fantastic game for anyone who like's traditional Japanese RPG's. Even if you're curious about the game, give it a try, the story alone is worth the money.
Totally worth it

This game is so addictive with the nice story line and game play along with the CS's in it. The game is on 4 disks and really takes a while to finish. You can think of it as an Final Fantasy game on the Xbox360 since the creator Hironobu Sakaguchi who's the creator of Final Fantasy serious, and the famous composer Nobuo Uematsu. I Highly recommend this game if you like the old FF's and it also worth buying an Xbox360 just for this game(like what I did).
Great game!

I got this for my husband and so far he is hooked! The graphic are amazing and he just enjoy all the details put in that game (music and story lines)! He just finished playing Oblivion and that was the next good game for him. The only thing that I personnally don't like about that game is that you cannot save whenever you want like Oblivion, you have to wait until the game offers you a saving point (like final fantasy).
Don't be fooled by names or the bias media

All they had to do was call this game 'Final Fantasy something or other' and the reviews would have been amazing. Remove the 'Final Fantasy' name and the media calls this game 'outdated' and or 'too old school'. The creator of Final Fantasy left to start the company Mistwalker, so in other words Mistwalker is the new Squaresoft(enix). I couldnt stand FF12 but I thought this game was amazing. The only flaws with game are the frame rate (slows down at times) and the fact it comes on 4 discs (I thought we were beyond this). Other wise fantastic game, characters, music and story.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this game an 8.5 (B+)

It had been awhile since I'd dug into a traditional Final Fantasy type turn-based RPG. The last was FF XII, which was an experience right up there at the top of the scale for video games. Naturally, then, I had high hopes for this "next-gen" game from the minds of the FF crew.
I turned out to be a little disappointed, though. Lost Odyssey has none of the polish that made FF XII what it was. Voice acting is surprisingly mediocre, the world is not as fleshed out (although it is still better than most RPGs, a la Final Fantasy), and the combat system is somewhat archaic. Much closer to FF X than FF XII. Why the creators should choose to abandon what was such a winning system is beyond me.
In truth, there is nothing at all next-gen about this game, excepting only graphics. They're very impressive, and beg the player to zoom the camera to take a closer look (which is always rewarded with high-res models).
But there is good to this game. The premise, which pits immortality against mortality, and illustrates the "blessing" of mortality (an ability to pursue specific goals and dreams within a finite amount of time - something this current culture kind of needs to hear) is intriguing, and the flagship character's struggle with this is meaningful. The dreams also, while possibly too much for some players, can be touching. This game tries to tug at the heartstrings and makes a theme of human nature, and at its best it does that well, making it powerful enough to remember. Unfortunately it doesn't always do so well, and some aspects are surprisingly unrefined.
This is a game which needed more work, pure and simple. Is it a meaningful piece of work? Definitely. Is it a little disappointing? Yes - unless your gaming standards are not very high. If Final Fantasy XII had not risen to shine over and above this game in almost every aspect, it could rest comfortably with my recommendation. As it is... play it, but adjust your expectations.
Very underrated RPG

The ratings game reviewers gave Lost Odyssey does no justice(ie. Gamespot-7.5, IGN-8.2) This game should at least be rated a 9.0, because of the great story it tells, and the traditional and fun battle system. While I do not mind the new RPG systems that are out such as Final Fantasy XII, I always preferred the traditional systems. Emotional, anticipating, and thrilling is what describes Lost Odyssey.
Many reviewers complaints about the game is that it doesn't do anything "new", framerate problems, and long loading time. The fact that it doesn't do anything "new" hardly bothers me. The framerate problem is something that is hardly even noticeable. And the loading time are nowhere longer than 4 seconds...sometimes even quicker.
One of the best RPG I have played since Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Cross, and I don't understand why reviewers gave it such a feeble score. I consider myself a very hard-to-please game crtic myself, and I loved this game. It makes me wonder why I even read reviews from game reviewers. All in all it's a great game, and I highly recommend it.
Happy gaming!
Justin
