An excellent and very deep fighting game!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

Despite the fact Soul Calibur is a much more beautiful game (and the arriving Dead Or Alive 2 is just as beautiful), Virtua Fighter 3tb is still worth its weight in gold thanks to its fantastic gameplay and lush locales. There's plenty of learn here, including counters, throws, and power moves. For a three year old game, VF3tb still has talent to burn.

VF3: As deep and complex as a fighting game gets

First off, this game isn't perfect. The sound is sub par for the VF series, there are several options missing that should have been implemented, some of the character models look a tad dated, etc. But these are minor quibbles for the most complex fighting game, er simulation, ever made. The depth and variablity of the fighting engine is unparalleled, and all of the characters are fun to play as. Shun is easily the coolest persona to ever grace a fighting game. This is a game you can play for a year and still feel like you don't know it all. The action is a mix of speed and anticipation -- you spend most of your fights trying to out guess your opponent and counter his attacks. This creates an experience that isn't present in other fighting games, with the possible exception of Ready 2 Rumble (also a great game). Other games have this to an extent, yet VF comes off feeling more like a real fight than any of the others. Overall, the gameplay is superb and will challenge you for a long, long time. If you feel that the game is disappointing at first, keep playing. Trust me. It gets better and better as you see more and more of it.

VF3 for Dreamcast

Okay, i'm sick of seeing people rate this game 2 stars. This game is awesome, and I'm sticking to it. I've played Soul Caliber, and I have to admit that it's pretty good too, but VF3 graphics much better, despite being 3 years older, and most importantly the gameplay is best for a 3d fighter yet. Although Soul Caliber does have the added rpg feature I don't see how it adds anything significant to the game. Fighters are meant to be played with friends. There's no fun in beating up on the computer. Bottom line, if you're looking for a great game that'll keep you busy for months then you've found it. This one's a definite keeper. To all of you that are bashing this game for the sake of attacking Sega, all I can say is don't kill yourself over the fact that they're putting out quality titles. And you brats, if your mommy was kind enough to get you a Dreamcast stop complaning that u want a PSX2. I know she's sick of you, grow up.

GOOD BUT COULD'VE BEEN BETTER...

AFTER 3 YEARS SINCE IT'S ARCADE RELEASE, sega's flagship fighter has finally arrived via dreamcast. but however without any real extra goodies, the graphics may be dated, but still hold their own against the likes of power stone and maybe soul calibur...maybe...

unfotunetly there's not enough charcaters in the VF3 line up. the sumo wrestler is very boring, but the other new fighter AOI, is great for VF experts. what improvements this game could've used would be a tekken like tag-team mode, where u could switch figters on the fly, as well as extra costumes and even a quest RPG mode like the original soulblade game (PSX) these extras would've definetly sell this game more, if not as much as SC oh well, just wait for the upcoming DEAD OR ALIVE 2 for DC. that's gonna be SEGA'S answer to tekken tag team..

What can I say?

Words cannot describe.

You need to feel this game. Cringe as Pai floors you with a double toe kick and mercilessly follows up with a jumping knee to the midriff. Cheer as you fight back with a spinning kick as you get up. You nimbly dodge the next kick and fire off a triple punch combo, finishing with a powerful backhanded punch to win the round. Watch it on the replay, go on. Laugh at Shun's ever-increasing drunkenness. Memorise that sweep kick movement. Gape as you realise fighting games do not have to feature blazing blue fireballs and Super Hyper Alpha Combo Breaking Double EX Special Level Three moves. Instead, here's a fighting game where the feature is actual fighting! Crikey!

So, why only 4?

Get to about... oooh... Level 7. Battle relentlessly until both characters are nearing the end of their tether. Open your attack and watch as the opposition stops it and fires one back, knocking you out. Pound your controller through the floor while screaming "BUT-I-PUSHED-PUNCH-THEN!"

Recover from that bout of frustration, continue the game and realise that when you're not frustrated you're having incredible fun. Read this review. Go to the store. Buy the game. Do it now.

The Gamespot review was for the Japanese version, not U.S.A.

First off, I'll correct the errors in the Gamespot review. The main problem is that the American version of VF3 features many improvements over the Japanese version. The training mode now gives damages for all moves and combos. You can set the opponent to either fight at a certain difficulty level or have them constantly perform certain moves like kicks, punches or jumping.

THERE IS A VS. MODE!! Important because any fighting game fan will really appreciate having this option.

There were several changes in TB versus regular VF3. Aside from having the Team Battle mode, all characters dodging was enhanced to carry them slightly further out of the way. Some balancing was also done on the characters by adjusting damages and recovery times on certain moves for all characters. A few characters got new moves and throws. Combo ability was enhanced for several characters. The list goes on. This is by far the deepest fighting game out there. If you like a challenge and the appeal of being able to continually improve over YEARS, this game is for you.

In my opinion this is the best fighting game ever. In addition, I've been playing this game since it came out on the Genesis (part I and part II) and then on the Sega Saturn (Virtua Fighters vs. Fighting Vipers) and i think that they were nice, now i can say that Virtua Fighters 3 for Sega DREAMCAST is the best, i've been searching in magazines and on game news and no fighting game can beat this one. Congratulations to SEGA for expanding its DREAMCAST World.

AN UNFORTUNATE VICTIM OF THE DC FIGHTER WARS

With Soul Calibur released there is no reason of buying this game. Sega's VF series is really dated and has been beaten by Namco's Tekken and Soul series.

VF3TB's graphics are real dated specialy on how the characters look. The arenas look decent. The sound is also bad. As for the controls they suck as well. I would only buy this if I were a VF fan!

get soul calibur

i took it home and played and i was very disapointed the sega saturns version was better than this. the graphics stink and they all have the same moves and the best move of the gave is punch three times in a row. i went to a friends house the day after i got and i played soul calibur and it is about 1,000 times better...trust me get soul calibur if you want 3d fighting.
