Dreamcast Shooter with depth!

When I rented this game, it had a lot of standards to live up to. I am a proud owner of both Quake 3 for Dreamcast, and Unreal Tournament for PC. I can say that this game certainly lives up to the hype, and does its name justice. If you have played the PC version, you may first judge the game by what it does not have. It's graphics arent quite as clean as the PC version's, and it is missing 4 model types (female, Skraaj, Nali, and Nali Warcow). But after playing it for a few minutes, you will forget all of that, and see what it has. The framerate is fairly smooth, and split-screen play doesn't affect it much. The sound is unchanged; all of your favorite taunts are there. The control is a big step up from Quake 3 for Dreamcast. In Quake 3, the controller made it difficult to aim. Unreal Tournament solves that by adding an auto-aim feature. This helps play immensly. But I know you don't care about all of this. You want to know about online play. Well, it is definately very good. Instead of limiting you to for players, up to 8 players can duke it out for dominance. That's right, capture the flag is now playable! It it usually runs very smoothly. I only had one instance of timeout so far, so it is pretty stable. So if your a Dreamcast owner looking for a good FPS, or a Unreal Tournament fan looking for split-screen play or new stages, give Unreal Tournament for Dreamcast a shot.

Great port of the PC version!

Unreal Tournament for the Dreamcast rocks! It's got:

- very good graphics, though not as good as Quake III

- 60 (!) levels, most of them are awesome with for example hidden buttons to trigger an object (to ... the enemy ;) and snipingplaces and sneaky corners to surprise the enemy but also great battlefields

- cool music and sound

- great AI, much better than Quake III; when the enemy is hurt he'll retreat and they haven't just got a higher hit% like Quake III but they'll really act smarter if you turn up the difficultylevel

- unreal (had to use this once ;) multiplayer mode: up to 4 players on one Dreamcast with a decent framerate

- ... weapons; both firing in two different ways including a sniper rifle, biosludge gun, chainsaw :) and much more

- subtle auto-aim, enough to make it playable with the Dreamcastcontroller but not too much to spoil the game

If you play on-line on your Dreamcast this is a game worth purchasing. On-line gaming is unbelievable. There really is no lag as the game play is quite smooth at all time. I'm not joking. I play NFL2K1 all the time and I experience lag a lot. But, I was very surprised to see there was no lag in UT even with 8 players on line. I have a keyboard and mouse--which I think makes the game much easier to play. My friend uses the controller. He seems to have no problem. It takes a little more time to just get used to it. "Auto aim" makes it easier. I have a lot of fun playing this game.

Quake III is amazing!! 30 kickin' levels, tons of creative and/or disgusting characters, great weapons, AMAZING online play w/ Broadband support (out 1/10/01), beautiful graphics and the sweetest multiplayer mode perhaps ever divined to console gaming (4 at once). So how would one go about trying to top this Godfather of first person shooters?

Hmm, let's see. 60-70 levels, even more bizarre personas from which to select, some bent and twisted weapons (Biorifle! Ripper -- that's a razorgun to you!), 4 player splitscreen, 8 player online chaos (also w/ Broadband and keyboard/mouse support), *beautifully* rendered backgrounds, a locked in 30+ framerate, this beats the pants off the PC and PS2 versions of UT available now. If you don't believe the hype, go check out the official UnrealTournament site.

So...with Unreal Tournament and Half-Life (hailed as the BEST GAME EVER) slated for release at roughly the same time, which one do I buy?? The answer is simple: you can flip a coin or BUY 'EM BOTH. But honestly, if you don't have that kind of $$, both teams working on both projects are crafting ports for the DC with LOTS of grisly murdering care, much as Raster did for Q3 and both promise to be amazing playing/feeling/looking games. Half Life caters to my slightly more intellectual and strategic side of the killing experience, and Half-Life dizzies my eye-candy loving butcher's side. You make the call!

Good Game, better on PC or PS2

I have played all versions of this game except the Mac and Game of the Year versions, this game is a great game but better on the PC or PS2. Don't get me wrong, if you don't have a good computer or you just don't have a PS2, then get this game for the DC. The game has a number of modes, the ones i find most entertaining is Capture the Flag in Face 2, and Deathmatch in most maps, the others are still entertaining. One thing i wasn't pleased with in the Dreamcast version was that they cut out one of the modes that was in the other versions.

Game play is awesome, once you get used to the controls, on levels you can use the sniper rifle in you can use the scope to literally shoot off the enemy's head. During play you can pause (in other versions theres a pop up menue so you don't have to pause the game) the game and go to a list and give an order to the bots on your team, if you don't do this it gets rather annoying when you hear "You got point" all the time. One thing i was missing in the game was the rail gun from the Quakes, but the game's still great. All the weapons in this game have a secondary function, with the rocket launcher you can shoot the rocket(s) like a granade, the secondary function of the Sniper Rifle allows you to zoom in with the scope. If you want a really long game don't get this game, i beat it in normal the first 2 days i had it.

This game is great, i would have given it 5 stars but they cut some stuff out of it so i had to give it a 4. Happy Gaming!

One of the best first person shooters on the PC makes its way to the Dreamcast as the best PC to console game yet (next to Quake 3 for the DC). While I still hold Quake 3 higher than Unreal, Unreal has a lot of things that Quake 3 doesn't; your opponents have very good AI, when their low on health they'll run away, and the frame rate is less sluggish than Quake 3. The online multiplayer mode however, is the best online play you'll ever play on the DC. All in all, this is one of the best games available for the Dreamcast, and I strongly suggest picking this up along with Quake 3 and Maken X, two other great first person shooters that will give you a hell of a playing experience.

Addictive and frenzied frag fest

Simply put, Unreal Tournament is one of the few reasons I still play my Dreamcast. As a single player game the only purpose it serves is to prepare you for the online mode, which will steal countless hours of your time away as you sit with your eyes glued to the television loving every mind blowing (yes, decapitated heads bounce across the screen) moment of play. Unreal Tournament marks the peek of the Dreamcast's wonderful life. This game is non-stop action with tons of levels and modes, which I could never get tired of. And what's better is this online play is totally free! As I write this review, the Dremcast has long been considered dead, but there is still plenty of competition on the servers! Buy this one now, it's a truly addictive classic with quality gameplay that will never grow old!

I got this game on ebay in a pack with Quake III Arena. They are very similar but Unreal is way better. The cover is sort of decieving though because the chainsaw is only on one level I know of. All weapons have a secondary fire or zoom which makes it way better than Quake. I recommend it to everyone who loves games with a lot of killing. Blood goes everywhere.

Unreal Tournament-better levels than PC

If you have ever played Unreal or UT on PC, you AIN'T played nothin' yet. The levels are much better designed, if not smaller. The gameplay is the same, good ol kill or be killed. While this may seem like it may get boring, all you have to do is defeat a few maps of one type and you unlock the next type of gameplay. My favorite is Domination in which there are 3 specific points on the map which you have to control to win. The longer you hold those points the more points you accumulate and eventually win. I must say that although this is a very good game, there is really no replay value. Let's face it, no one buys a game just to play through it once and put it away. I have defeated all levels and all Challenges and I have done just that, put it away. I pull it out everyone once in awhile, when I'm bored, just to kill, maim, and desecrate the AI opponents, other than that it has become just another game in my library.

This game rocks!!! You can play with bots(computer controlled)and make them hard, or easy. You can tell them what to do too. I think this game is, well, ill just say, the coolest game ever, better then both Halos, better then all of the Quake games, but its true. The levels are great! I like playing capture the flag with the bots, the weapons are cool too! This game was just too good... Buy this game, dont listen to anyone else that talked bad about this game! Just buy it!!!!!!!
