Huge giant robots .huge giant flashy explosions. Huge giant comic book store owners all rushing to buy the game at once.Game play is generally good (well duh it's a fighting game),nice graphics and a cool finishing move for each character.but the feature i liked most was to watch the anime movie tech romancer!

Tech Romancer features great gameplay!

Here are some things about the game I feel really can make or break the game for you, the cautious buyer:

--T.R. relies heavily on the style of Japanese art known as anime. If you are fond of anime, know it, and love it, you WILL love this game. The anime features make the game unique. However, if you do not care for anime, you might scoff at the characters, music, and voices (all Japanese).

--The 3D fighting engine is superb and the detailed and highly interactive backrounds let you immerse into the realtiy that is this game. Biuldings can be destroyed, revealing very useful and diverse skills and power-ups, (so cool).

--Attacks are diverse...robots range from a robot constructed of stone to the latest Air Force technology to a robotic Sailor Moon. Moves are a blast, easy to do, and consist of bright colors and lights that make you giddy... oooh...

--Not TOO cartoony, but don't expect to be ripping off anyone's head in the midst of battle.

--When it comes to replay value... you WILL play this for a long time, the features take a while too earn, but are real fun. 3 secret characters, Vmu minigames (addictive), and so much variety.

If you want a fighting game that is serious strategy (it takes thought to win, don't just tap Y), like anime, or are being forced at gunpiont to buy this game, I recommend Tech Romancer. (OR you could just rent it and see for yourself!)

The Definitive Giant Robot Fighting Game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3

Take any two Giant Robots, put them in a large outdoor area, and invariably they'll fight. That's the premise behind Capcom's Tech Romancer. There are twelve robots to choose from, each representing a particular style of giant robot from Japanese animation. There is G-Kaiser, a robot which resembles Tranzor-Z from the eighties cartoon of the same name, and Pulsion, which could easily pass as an EVA from Evangelion. Each robot has a variety of special attacks, which range from your garden variety rocket fists to the absurdly comical giant squeaky hammer.

Gameplay is very straightforward. (Two robots enter! One robot leaves!) You fight until your damage bar reaches the top of the meter, then you get knocked down. Get knocked down twice, and the match is over. Your robot can move about the arena freely, towards and away from the camera, but all attacks are limited to the two dimensional plane. Capcom really didn't do anything innovative with the game, but they did add an armor rating, which represents how many times you can block attacks. To be honest, you won't notice it until your armor breaks and that giant wrecking ball you were hoping to block knocks you clear across the screen.

There are two main modes of play, Story Mode and Hero Challenge Mode. Story Mode pits your robot against specific opponents through several Episodes, during which your robot's pilot has dialogues with various characters before attempting to beat the living daylights out of the next opponent. Capcom really emphasizes Tech Romancer's anime (Japanese Animation) roots in this mode, giving each robot a unique title card for each episode and adding eyecatch sequences to mask loading times. Thankfully, Capcom decided not to overly localize Tech Romancer. The most they've done is translate menus and add english subtitles. That means all of the Japanese voice acting remains intact. Hero Mode pits your robot against the other twelve robots to see how well you do. The computer then rates your performance and gives you points that you can use to unlock hidden characters and special bonuses, such as pilot profiles and a music selection screen.

You'll have fun playing Tech Romancer, but the fighting engine isn't all that deep compared to the likes of Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive 2. That said, Tech Romancer is very entertaining game to play, and will keep you coming back to unlock all of the goodies that Capcom added for the home version. Of course, there's the usual Capcom versus mode so you can battle it out over who gets the giant robot bragging rights. For fans of Giant Robots From Japan, or anyone that enjoys a good simple fighting game, Tech Romancer is an excellent purchase.

Giant Robots Rule

This in one of the best games I have ever played.

Basically, if you love giant robot mechs from classic and present anime then this is the game for you. The mech designs are from the concept of the creator of Macross (Robotech in America). You can choose such mechs as an EVA, Valkyrie, Mazinger Z, Gundam, etc.

This game is also filled with tons of extras, 3 mini games for the VMU, multiple story lines per character, Mini anime of the game, art pictures, 2 puzzle games, and a whole lot more.

If you ever wondered if a Valyrie (Veritech) can beat a Gundam, or if an EVA can eat up Mazinger Z, get this game.

What's all this hype about it being better than VOOT?

To be frankly and brutally honest, I would buy this game for the fact that I am one who loves his mecha(Not "Robots" as many would call them,);I love these mecha more than the people of this review board combined, and if you ever went to my house, my Gundam,Voltron,Macross, and other Mecha merchandise would prove it. However this game, despite it's great artwork and classic mecha designs, offers nothing as much as VOOT does, nor does it stand up to either Armored Core 2, or Gungriffon, or even StarGladiator 2!

It's faults lie in it's inablity to deliver a game with sharp controls, skillful gameplay, and at the very least, moderate graphics(although the screen shots are nice!) The game's main objectives rely too much on projectiles and not on strategy or "ninja-gaming" skills, but seriously only on button mashing and cheesing. The sluggish responsiveness also adds to it's many faults for it's slow-paced action and mediocre gameplay, and even though some would argue that it's because of the so called "realistic movement", VOOT and Armored Core 2 blow those arguements outta the water! Plus, as a side note, the graphics, although they do NOT make a game, seriously detriment the way this game should have been handled, especially by the likes of Capcom of all people; both Armored Core 2 and VOOT beat it in gameplay, control, graphics, and overrall depth!

Along that, people have the gall to say that VOOT has bad control, which I seriously say to them "SCRUB!",as in scrubby, casual gamer! The controls, true, are complex in VOOT, but are not only lightyears more responsive, but also add to the same kind of fighting depth that Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter have, which also made them awesome and great games for both Scrub and Champ alike; whereas things like Asuka 120% and Gekido are mediocre games, bad ones at worse!

Sure the Mecha designs are cool! Sure it's nostalgic! sure it's fun to play as classic mecha designed warriors, but since when does atmosphere and art and projectile explosions take the place of stern gameplay, sharp control, smooth graphics, incredible depth, and all-around champion gaming that both VOOT and Armored Core 2 have, and TechRomancer doesn't? Never. That's when! So those who have DC's buy VOOT before Techromancer, and those who have PS2's,buy Armored Core 2 before TechRomancer,`cause even though it's pretty like candy it offers very little compared to the main course dinners of those other 2! Peace out!!

Better than VOOT? I think not!.....

I've heard many a hype about this TechRomancer, and to be honest, I'm surprised it's gotten the noteriety it's gotten for being such a mediocre game. Things like solid gameplay, sharp control, graphics, and innovation were replaced by atmosphere, music, art designs, and projectile attacks, and what does that mean exactly? It means that this is only a game for the casual and unskilled gamers out there, or the hard-core Mecha fans who buy anything with either Great Mazinger or Shogun Warriors. Bluntly, here are it's statistics regarding it's main points:

Storyline:7/10 Nothing much to complain here. Enjoyable enough, and would have been a much better game if it had been done right;it would make a GREAT anime though!

Graphics:5/10 Here's apoint that bugged me; this is supposed to be the DC< yet all I see are Bleemed PSX graphics, with pixelation galore, and undefined sprites at times. What's up Capcom? Where's the love here?

Control:4/10 Here's where it gets ugly. It's sluggish and meandering control eats away at what ordinary gaming goodness it had in the first place! Some would argue that it's to "feel" like you are in a giant robot, thusly, you must move like molasses; frankly, VOOT and Armored Core 2 move just fine,(realistically I might add,) and it's controls are as sharp as a carving knife! there's no real excuse really for it's slow-paced and elephant-like control. Plus, the attacks are mostly "jamming" enduced, so there's no skill either to be had.

Music:8/10 Possible on of the only reasons other than the awesome artwork to buy this game(other than expanding your collection!) It's fun,it's upbeat, and it's lively.....unlike it's gameplay in general. Too bad; it's so good for such an undeserving game. Music doesn't make a game though.

Designs:9/10 Ahhhh.....great mecha designs for such a great....Wait! What's it doing in this game?? Too bad the Mechas carry the whole weight of the entire game, since it's it's best selling point, aside from the music. Again, too bad......Art doesn't make a game either.....

Sound:8/10 Loud, clankity, and energetic, and it was great! But alas, sounds don't make a game do they? Evidently, not.

Gameplay:5/10 Oy! It's slow and boring at times, after you've played it for some hours, you'll say how repetitive it gets; when you've seen one large, button-jammed created projectile, you've seen `em all. plus, they stole the power-ups, projectile attacks, and other goodies form Marvel Super Heroes.

Overall:7/10 I really would have liked this to be VOOT or Armored Core 2, but not only is it not nearly as good, but it's claiming To be better than the afforementioned 2. And, many say also that it's great artwork and music and atmosphere make it a great game, but that simply isn't true. When does art, and music, and atmosphere take the place of gameplay, control, graphics, innovation, and fun? Never. That's when.

So if you ever buy this game, and you own a DC or PS@, but either VOOT or Armored Core 2 first, and maybe TechRomancer second, so you can see wit your own eyes how much the gap is among them.

It's alot of fun but not perfect.

This game is tons of fun, but it is not perfect. Yeah VO:OT is better, but I am not going to slam Tech Romancer because of that. Personally they are really differant. I see VO:OT as a mech simmulation game, this is more of a traditional fighting game with the twist being that the fighters are classic mechs.
I still recommend buying this if you are a jap. giant robo nut, but also buy Virtual On. It is tons of fun.

Great fighting system

I don't know why people are wasting comparing this to other giant robot games that are nothing like one another. Tech Romancer is a standard fighting game and behind the giant robots is a great combat system. It's complex because it has things like super moves, finishing attacks, 5 different powerup items, 3 different weapon items for each fighter, steel dashing and guard crusher, and stun moves etc. But at the same time all of the fighters are easy to learn, so you can focus on your game strategy instead of trying to memorize combos, and it makes for a good break for people who are tired of DOA or soul calibur where every fighter has 50 different hits and chains to remember. If you want a complex game, but with a bunch of unique and interesting fighters you can easily get the hang of, buy Tech Romancer.

More than solid Capcom fighter worth checking out

Tech Romancer is one of the most forgotten games for the Dreamcast, but it still holds up well, and for a game with giant mechs, it sure beats that other mech game for the DC: Virtual On. The fighting system is ultimately complex yet it is so simple to get into and pull off a bevy of moves on your opponent. However, while that is a good point, the controls themselves are so simply put together you can just button mash your way through the game most of the time. The graphics are lackluster for the most part, they look like pixelated PS1 graphics and really don't push the Dreamcast to it's limits, but all that aside Tech Romancer is still a very fun fighter that is easy to get into and doesn't require as much thought as Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive 2.

An underrated title...

Tech Romancer is one of those games that doesn't break any new ground, but expands upon ground already broken by other mecha games. First, come expecting a fighting game. That's what you're gonna get, and that in spades.

Now, onto the actual review. What makes Tech Romancer so fun is the way it integrates elements from classic japanese mecha series with it's intriguing anime style and 3-D fights. From the transforming fighter jet to the overly cute, simplistic little girl mecha design, everything in this is classic.

Now I'll ist some of the Pros and Cons on a technical level:

Pros:

* The battle scenes take place in 3-D environments, giving them a new level on intensity. Also, attacks are creative.

* The Robot designs are unique and well-designed.

* There is a myriad of different extras to be unlocked by collecting points from the game.

* This game has a great replay value if you enjoy this type of stuff.

Cons:

* As I said, this is a pure fighting game. The backstories of the characters are poorly-written and were created only to advance the battle sequences.

* Characters are 1-D and contain cliche personalities, with no minds of their own.

* The soundtrack contains only typical action anime/game music, giving it no real edge.

If you like fighting games with lots of extras, I highly recommend this. ^^ If you're looking for a compelling game, then forget about it.
