I feel like I'm playing the Saturn version

I am a huge SEGA racing fan, but Sega Rally 2 for the Dreamcast is not my cup of tea. I had a Saturn and Sega Rally 1 for it. I loved the game and even mastered the time attack mode and 2-player head-to-head mode. The game was by far the best racing game for any platform. But years later I decided to move up in hardware power and bought a Dreamcast. When I got my hands on Sega Rally 2 and played the game it was just sick. As I cried on how bored I was and dissappointed in SEGA. The game lasted only 30 minutes in my house and then I took it straight to the pawn video game shop. I felt like I was playing the 32-bit pop-up Saturn on my 128-bit polygon monster house Dreamcast. The game is virtually the same as the Saturn version. No, there are no better graphics and the sound is not memorable. The only new features are the 16 tracks and about 12 new cars which are all about the same except for looks. The thing that irritated me the most was the excessive drop in fram rate from 60 to about 30. It stays in the 30 fram rate zone about 3/4ths of the time. I was yelling at my system to make-up its mind on what is it going to be 60 or 30 frams per second. Believe me it is very bothersome. All those people who give this game 90's or five stars are just doing this to make the dreamcast look like a good system and are probably paid by SEGA to cover up their terrible game. The Dreamcast is great, but not this game. Just save your money and wait for Crazy Taxi to come out for the dreamcast.

Disappointing

Not at all what I expected.

The graphics were superb. I was particularly tickled by the flashing cameras as I passed the spectators.

The gameplay is almost laughable. On the mud/snow based courses, you more or less keep the trigger fully depressed and slide sideways 95% of the track. I was curious as to how I could slide at a 45 degree angle the entire length of a straight-away at 120mph.

I am an avid fan of racing games. The Dreamcast will be a fine racing console, I'm sure. But this title would be better suited as a free system enclosure rather than a stand alone game.

Rental only.

Somewhat Uneventful Driving Game

Just got finished playing Sega Rally 2 ... it was a bit of a disappointment. On the positive side there were many cars to choose from, about 4 tracks, and various modes to play in. But the overall driving model was boring. I think developers could produce much better driving games with what the Dreamcast engine has to offer.

Those searching for a better driving game might want to try CART Racing or Monaco GP. I played them on the Sega demo CD and they were LOTS of fun.

Very good... until the 7th round

This game starts out very good, great graphics, good sound FX, (except for the voice of the annoying co-driver, AAAARRRRGGGGHHH). It starts out fairly simple and easy going, you might not place first, but you can advance fairly easily. But watch out after the 7th..... it goes down hill from there. It took me about 8 tries to beat the 7th round, then the 8th! FORGET ABOUT IT! The game suddenly becomes impossible! The last track of the 8th round is absolutely impossible to complete! It gives you like 28 seconds to get to the check point! I have yet to see it, and I've played the 8th round about 100 times! It made me so mad I haven't played it in a month! If you can put up with the crazy difficulty level then pick this up, if not... STAY AWAY!

Could have been better

The game was a disappointment to me and, quite frankly, a waste of my money. If you are considering buying this, I beg of you, rent it first. I sure wish I had. The only reason i give it two stars instead of one is because the graphics are nice. Sega tried to make the replay value high by adding the career mode, but the game is too boring to get too involved with it. Save your money, especially when you have "Crazy Taxi" coming out soon.

NOT TOO GOOD, BUT OKAY

The game was okay but it could have been better. I think that the time limit and check points are stupid. It takes for ever to do anything. By the time you get up the tracks, you might get too a hard track and you might not make the time so you fail and have to start over. You get three chances but sometimes it's not enough. The graphics are ok but when you slide on dirt, asphalt or any type of racing surface it looks like you are in water. They should have put damage into the game, that might have helped the game a little. I really hope that DC does better at racing games in the future and if not save up for Playstation 2.

Dreamcast game marred by 3rd party support

I recently purchased Sega Rally 2 and have to say that while it is a fun game, make sure you have the right peripherals for it. I have a Performance/InterAct controller and memory card that according to the lady at 1-800-USA-SEGA is causing my game to crash and not be able to save. I have now had to bite the bullet of my previous peripheral purchases and special order a Sega brand VMU from Amazon just so that I can play the game. Sega informed me that both MadCatz & InterAct were not only unliscensed products, but that they are damaging my Dreamcast console. Buyer Beware!

Visually Great

I bought this game with the hopes that it would be more than eye candy and was a bit dissapointed. If you really like racing I dont think that this game is anything more than a tease for what a fun game it could be. Each race last an average of 1 minute just when your getting into it, its over. I know its a time based race but they could have made the courses much larger and given you a a better feel for racing. In arcade mode the game is over in 4 races basically 4 minutes. I returned my copy unsatisfied, if you really enjoy racing pick a game where you can really rip it up for more than 1 minute at a time.

An okay game, but hyped up too much. It's a decent single player drive, but not much competition or presence of others cars, not-so-hot 2 player mode.
