The Greatest Rally Racing Game of Them All?

When I heard that Sega Rally Championship 2 was coming out for Dreaamcast, I knew I had to have it. Let's be honest. No one makes arcade racers like SEGA (except maybe Namco). So when one of their best arcade racers comes home loaded with extras, you know you're in for treat.
To tell you the truth, I almost traded this game in right after I purchased it. Why? The arcade mode was unforgiving, and really just repeats itself after the first time. I thought I had been cheated. And then I tried the 10 year championship mode.
My oh my. The championship mode on this game has got to be one the greatest racing experiences that can be had on a game console. You have two view modes, both of them PERFECT. You have car customization, but not the boring, confusing, time wasting sort that has become common nowadays. You have SEGA arcade-style music, which I happen to love. You fantastic slip-and-slide physics which make controling the cars a blast. You have TONS of different variations on the race tracks (every one of them a perfect example of AWESOME track design). And lastly, you have some of the most beautiful graphics in any racing game ever. Honestly, the first time I raced a track at sunset, I was OVERJOYED that I didn't get rid of this game when I considered doing it. The most beautiful graphics in any racing game can (in my humble opinion) be found in the original Wipeout, and this game.
The only downside to this game is the simple fact that it's too hard. I simply CANNOT get past the 9th year in the 10 year championship. And forget about 1st place in arcade mode unless you're superman. But perhaps that's part of what makes this game so great. You keep coming back for one more go, because it's so darn fun and so darn hard. Better that than hard and not fun (I'm talking to you Nintendo). For arcade racing fans this game is an absolute must.
Terrific Game...

If you are a racing fan this is definitely the game for you! If you like racing but don't eat, sleep, or drink it then this is a must as you won't care about the details so much. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST RALLY GAMES OUT THERE!! I haven't tried V-Rally yet but expect that it is just as good from all of the good reviews and seldom a critical one...
I would buy this if it was $25 but probably not more than that. ...
Entertaining

Sega Rally 2 is perhaps the best racing game on the Dreamcast. So if you own the unit, and need a racing game, consider this one first. However, the game could have been made to be a little more enjoyable. First off, because this was a launch game, it could be expected that this would not be the racing game of all racing games. Considering this, its more amazing that such a game still ranks above others of its genre, such as Daytona USA, Sega GT, even Test Drive LeMans. However, the pressures for an on-time release most likely affected some aspects of the game.
Take for instance the arcade mode. To this day i can still not make it past the third level, there is just not enough time. The multiplayer mode is fun, and the replays are dazzling to perceive, however with only one mode it can get pretty boring, pretty fast. The ten year tournament is the real beef of the game, and my only complaint is that the races are a bit short. However the changing weather conditions and the various courses for each area ensure that each race is a new experience. Add to this the excitement of trying to finish first with the hope of unlocking new cars, and you've got great fun.
The cars, alhough there is quite a few, do show a lot of similarity in handling and speed, although some distinction is present which adds to the flavor of the game. The graphics are awesome and I find the vehicle modifications satisfactory. The handling becomes easier as you learn to control the cars. The music is on key, except for the lady singing opera in the snow levels. Its bearable though. Overall this game is a great value. If you buy it, don't stop until you beat it.

Sega Rally 2 kicks ass! I bought mine for $5 and you guys are selling it for $9.99! You guys are pathetic! But enough about that, Sega Rally 2 gives you the highest performance of Rally Racing. The best racing game in dreamcast is Tokyo Extreme Racer, but this is second best! The hard part is getting 1st in all races and beating each year! Thats what makes it so fun and exciting!
This game was a blast

I bought this game not knowing what to expect. This game blew my expectations away. I love this game not only is it fun to race friends in the multi-player mode and beat them. But this game is great solo. You can unlock new and better cars, determined on the placing and scores you get. This game is by far one of the best rally games I've played. It was AWESOME.
An above average racer for Dreamcast

This is a good game and I want to bring up the most important
parts of why this game is not excellent. The courses are
very short, most are only a minute to complete with a few laps
in single player mode. I ended up spending more time between
courses tweaking my car than I did driving! The weakest point of
the game are the controls. Without the racing wheel you have
much less control than in other games. Mashing the buttons
down to take a hard turn or tapping the button a few times for
a short turn was common. Other racing games let you have full
control; you can hold the control and it will respond immediately
and control more like a normal car. The controls are def
made for the racing wheel and respond great with it. The bumps
and turns come out less realistic with the rumble pack than
in other games such as GT3. Graphics are very pleasing but much better in Test Drive Le Mans than here. The game is not
easy even on EASY setting; against a second player the game
is very evenly balanced though. Your buddy can get annoying telling you where the turns are, I turned them off. This game
was great back in 2000 but you can find much better on Dreamcast and GT3 beats just about every racing game out there.
please don't buy it

If you like racing, this would be one to get. Although, you gotta be pretty good. Unlike almost every other racing game, with this one you actually need to use you brakes. I think there are about 7 or 8 cars when you start out. There aren't that many tracks, but you gotta start out on the easy ones anyway. Well, if ya got some money, I'd say pull the old credit card out right now and buy it.
Seems good at first, but...

Some things are really good. Driving at night through the snow looks gorgeous, but there's a kind of strobe effect as the lights move over the snow that made me feel queasy after quite a short time.
I didn't think, even after quite a bit of practice, that the cars handle too well. Perhaps it would be better with a wheel.
And it's too easy to stay on the track: when you crash, nothing much happens, no matter how fast you go. And there's no reverse gear, which is silly.
The more you look at it, the more disappointing it gets. Water splashes are very odd looking, and in replay, the cars look simply awful: The Colin McRae Rally I had for PC a few years ago was much better in this respect. You probably won't want to watch replays on this.

For once can nobody compare every racing game to Gran Turismo. This isn't Gran Turismo, it's Sega Rally. This is an arcade racing game, not a driving sim. Two entire different types of racers. Even experts do it, I'm tired of it. A certain gamespot reviewer compared MSR to Gran Turismo when they're both trying to be two entirely different racing games. Stop it you morons!
Oh yeah despite a lower framerate then it's arcade version and horrible two-player mode Sega Rally Championship follows in the original's footsteps of having the best gameplay of any arcade raver to ever come out. Yes, better then ridge racer. Learn the controls and courses and you WILL love this game.
