Best soccer game to date

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 12 / 13

I've read a lot about the problems this game has been having on the PS3... talks of slow-down in the game play, reviews coming mostly from Europe, particulary the UK. I'm not sure what is different here in the US, but I've had absolutely no slow-down problem of any sort. I've played it on my Standard-TV (non-HD) and my HD set, and everything is running smooth.

As far as I can tell, that's been the only thing dragging down other reviews, because this game is close to perfect. Yes, it does the lack of licencing is an issue(doesn't have all real team names, player names, etc.), but that can be easily fixed using the editing tools, or you can download optionfiles with everything fixed and updated. Just google "Pro Evo 2008 ps3 option file" and you should be able to find it along with instructions.

The soccer in this game is brilliant, and is much more realistic than FIFA!!

It's about gameplay

This game as all the Pro Evolution Soccer series, formerly known as Winning Eleven, is about enjoying the game of soccer as closely as the real game.
When you score you really fight for it and it's not about doing the same play over and over to score multiple times you might try the same play and results won't be always the same.
I dodn't give the game 5 stars just because the graphics in the background specially when you score are like the original Play Station, but you can live with that when your fingers and mind are itching to play this game, because as games in the past it is adictive and when you get to score you enjoy it because it's exciting you put effort into it.
Also if you are into WE and now PES you know you don't get all licensed teams but that doesn't take anything away of the fun factor and gameplay, maybe on the over all experience.
And in case you are wondering I have played the FIFA 2008 demo sure it was impressive graphic wise, and the licensed teams but after 2 games I didn't want to know anythig else about it. In the end what are you looking for a nice game to watch or an adictive game to play? If you want licenses and stunning presentatio go with Fifa if you are craving for an addictive game then go with Pro Evolution.

Best soccer game ever

I've been a PES/Winning 11 enthusiast since 1998, and this is the best iteration by far. Although the network play mode is major novelty, expect to have a poor experience when playing an opponent on the network - just when you think your D cleared a ball in the goal area, the ball all of a sudden goes in the net.

Below Expectations

I own a PS3 and have both FIFA 2008 and PES 2008. After having played both for a while I find FIFA is better by far. The movement of the players is much realistic in FIFA while it realy bothers me to have to edit the team names and player names in PES to match the real ones. After being a fan of PES/Winning Eleven for several years I am definitely moving to FIFA.

A good Winning Eleven game overall

It is certainly not perfect, and my expectations were a bit higher for the PS3 version. However, I will say it is still a good game for previous Winning Eleven (now PES 08) fans. The gap between FIFA and Winning Eleven is clearly narrowing, but I still give Winning Eleven the edge for sheer gameplay. One annoying thing is that replays suffer tremendously from slowdown. If you are the type to get bothered or angered by this, then don't bother with this game. Framerate drops are barely noticeable during gameplay as to affect my review.

Some things I hope Konami will update. Graphics. They are still behind EA in this department with respect to framerate and overall quality. Online connectivity. It sucks. I expect better from this console generation.

Impossible to play online

I am a PES/Winning Eleven fan, I switched from FIFA series about 7 years ago, but this version is much worse than the previews one.
Most of the time I play in the Xbox Live, and it is impossible to play in this version because there are several serious flaws:

1) the game difficult is set as Beginner, that means all players, except the one you have control, are terrible, including your goalkeeper.
2) The game are unrealistic, the regular match has about 6-7 goals
3) The ball sometimes "disappears" and show up in a completely different part of the field
4) This is more generic issue, but the version is launch in March when the season is about to finished, which means it is completely outdated.
I will keep my 2007 version until something better show off.

If you had other PES 08 version, forgot about this one.

I had the PC and the PS3 Jap version of this game, and trust me; there's nothing new, only a few stadium added, but no single player roster update. However it did fix some replay lag, but overall lag still there when viewing cinematic in the intro, is probably good for those never play PES 08 before, just don't expect a lot to compare to Fifa(PS3 Version), Fifa version of PS3 was a lot better than PES other than gameplay. What i am saying; the best version of PES 08 is the PC, here's why; first of all. It does look better, if you had a nice video card that can actually display 1900x1200 than just 720P in the PS3, and there's third party mod that can fix the unlicensed team logo and player name. Also i find problem playing PES 08 online, for some reason.

First of all, I have PS3 but I bought a PS2 version of the game. The online mode is lagging so bad. the player move around without your control. also, PS3 have less Stadium then PS2. If I not remember wrong. PS3 only have 10 stadium vs PS 2 35 Stadium. PS2 get the World Tour Mode, which PS3 doesn't have. Xbox 360 and PS3 has so many bug. go Google search PES 2008 bug. you will know what I am talking about here. Very Disappointed fans of WE series.

Not better than the previous PES title

If you are used to PES 2007 or WE 10, you'll be a little disappointed. Gameplay is a lot more realistic, but slower. The game became a lot harder than the previous versions. You must choose a team a lot superior than the other in order to perform some of the plays that you could before.
The graphics could be a lot better, it does not unleash the true potential of the console, and the playability isn't that amusing as the previous versions.
Yet, it's still a lot of fun.
