A nice, traditional-style RPG

While The Legend of Heroes doesn't make any truly groundbreaking new innovations in the RPG genre, it is nonetheless a very enjoyable game. Considering the PSP's limited game library and the fact that only a few RPG's exist for it, The Legend of Heroes is one of the only options if you're in the market for an RPG.

The game contains a simple, yet fun battle system that's reminiscent of the Arc the Lad series or Lunar in the sense that the player's characters move about the battle screen rather than staying in one location for the duration of the battle.

Sound-wise, the game excels. With an excellent original soundtrack and sound effects, the game is simply outstanding in this sense.

The storyline is fairly good and will keep most players interested throughout the game. Although it's nothing we haven't seen a dozen times before, (unsuspecting boy from small country village leaves home and goes on epic adventure and meets an odd cast of characters along the way) it'll keep your attention for awhile.

Visually, the game is also impressive. The environments are incredibly detailed and quite beautiful. Some nice lighting effects add to the realism of the game as well. The characters themselves are done very well too. Large, detailed, very sharp character sprites are used and they look quite fantastic, especially against the game's amazing environments.

My only major problem with this game, however, is that it seems to have been released a bit prematurely. As a number of other reviewers have said before me, there are various small errors that were overlooked and could have been easily fixed if just a bit more time were spent looking through the game to find them. The game is plagued by bad grammar and missing words, and occasionally in situations where the player is given a choice of what to say in a conversation, (e.g. yes/no option) the player will be given the choices before the question is even asked.

Finally, I completely agree with the reviewer before me who pointed out that the rest of the series really ought to have been released in English. The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion is actually the fourth game in the Legend of Heroes series and the second in the Gagharv Trilogy, so it would be great if we could see an English release of the rest of the series (unfortunately, I doubt it'll happen). Aside from these issues, however, the game really is quite well-made.

Good game, despite a few huge flaws.

Legend of Heroes is a good game, but it has a few flaws that are just terrible, and really bring it down. If only Bandai had taken the time to polish it a bit more, it would be a great game.

While a bit linear, I found the characters engaging and really looked forward to the next bit of the story as I went through the game. Without spoiling the ending, I thought that the last dungeon was done well, and reminded me of playing Final Fantasy IV or VI.

My major beef with this game is the translation. It is just horrible. There are constant spelling errors, sentences that just don't make sense and words that are just mixed up.

Other minor things bugged me as well... some prompts you are given to select an option have the unfortunate problem of being smaller than the border created to go around them. (This happens when resting in people's homes sometimes) Or another minor flaw is often when someone important speaks, the game colors their text blue... but then the next 10 lines of dialogue from the normal characters are blue as well.

Apart from the sloppiness there, I really did enjoy the game... It was better than I expected it to be.

One of the BEST so far!

I absolutely love this game! I recommend and encourage everyone to buy it! If you are into the type of RPGs with a lot of stories and dialogues, then this is it! This is why I bought the game. I love to get to know the characters and I love to know about what's going on with everything. Also, I love classic RPGs such as Final Fantasy series for SNES and Chrono Trigger, so this is a similar feel to them. If you don't like too much talking, then you're gonna have to move on to another game. I give this 5 full stars!

Awesome Game, Wonderful RPG

I am tired of people saying this game isn't good and to buy Kingdom of Paradise instead. Why would people say things like that? These two are very different games, and role playing games. One of them is an action RPG... meaning for all those impatient people who want nothing but hack and slashing, that's the game for you. I personally love both games, and would never criticize something like this. Both games came out the same day, just because of that you have to compare them to each other? This is, really a great game... It goes back to being as good as any classic RPG that has been made. Everything that is imagined and needed for how a fantasy should be is done here. I recommend this game to everyone. Everything about it is a challenge.

this is a beautiful game, and it is worth the money! Rpgs are suppossed to have a story line, otherwise you should be playing a fps or something. This sets up their motives and their desires very well. Excelent game, brings us back to the days of the RPGS of snes. If you love breath of fire, chrono trigger, secret of mana, or final fantasy, i see no reason why would would not lvoe this game. Ontop of the story line the graphics are beautiful. FINALLY A RPG FOR PSP!!!

Nothing amazing, but good

If they can get past the grammatical errors, rpg fans will probably enjoy this game.

Pros: Decent story, interesting characters, and the graphics and music aren't bad, either. Battles are challenging.

Cons: As stated above, there are grammatical errors throughout the game. Long introductory scene (could be a plus if you enjoy such scenes).

This game starts off a little slowly, but really picks up in the second half. It's definitely worth a try if you're into fantasy rpg's.

The Best RPG for PSP I have played yet.

I have played many RPG's in the past, and several for the PSP and this game is by far the best I have seen. Some people have said that this is a "slow" japanese style RPG, but that is hardly a bad quality. The story is imersive and the graphics are very decent for the PSP. This game is just put together well, the menu system is easy and intuitive, so is the battle system. I LOVE the deadly attacks! If you are looking for a good, deep, long lasting RPG get this game, and the sequal comes out next week! So you can continue the adventure with that one.

BUY THIS GAME ITS GREAT

pretty nice traditional RPG, pet system should be better

recetly, my PSP got stolen, with this game
and I order another PSP, and this game
why?
I had lot of fun with the game, I have been through 60% overall
the storyline is smooth, decent battle system (but I think Avin, Mile deadly are similar)
pet system may be a plus, but I prefer it's neither happy nor angry, because it helps you pickup item, that makes the recovery easier (you can ONLY carry up to 10 each), but I don't think buying petfood can change the pet's mood
running errand may be kinda boring, you may need to mess with some monsters to gain some money (you can escape easily with blue, no way with red)
graphic is great, no problem with zooming, sound is great too
but game save control is kinda confusing, and I make error with it
for a die-hard RPG fans, this game is a must for PSP user

update: I have finished the game, the ending is LONG (about an hour), and complete, toggle between a conversation between Rutice and Avin; and other member, the ending is pretty worth to watch

Excellent RPG (no kid speaking)

This is a excellent game! It is challenging and fun. The characters do develop a bit and the story is interesting. Don't listen to the 1-3star reviewa about this. If you like Golden Sun, buy this for a fact! The only problems: grammar erros in the text, and I wish there was voice acting, but it is stll great. Buy this game! If you liked Golden Sun, or a classic RPG (no hack and slash) buy this. If you are impacient, get Kingdom of Paradise then.

Very good, but they should've released the rest of the series.

To me, this review's title says it all. Without the other games in the series, you lose something. Not that it's not a great, fun game to play. If you can't speak Japanese, buy it RIGHT NOW. If you can, go to yesasia.com and get the whole series. It really adds quite a bit to the game-playing experience.
