Real Pool

This game is interesting but not exciting. I love to play pool myself, but this game is......a little boring after a while. On the other hand, there are many games to play (nine ball, eight ball an TONS more) and the games are good. To position your shot is easy and making the actual shot is easy. BUT there are challenges. There are things called puzzles which are basiclly trick shots on different shaped tables ( star, heart ect.) Those are alot of fun and some are hard to master. This isn't the best game I've played but a good one still. I recommend renting it and trying it for yourself

Just because I say "not perfect", don't get the wrong idea. This is an excellent game, particularly if you're a die-hard pool player with a PS2. I'll try and break it down:

Graphics - certainly very good, and high-resolution. How much detail can you put on a pool table? Simple graphics, but effective. The reflections on the ball (as mentioned in another review) are quite a highlight. The graphics aren't anti-aliased, though, which leads to the occasional "jaggy" edges. But the game's at a high enough resolution that this doesn't really affect anything (Madden and NHL 2001 aren't anti-aliased, either, nobody complains!)

Gameplay - one word: SUPERB. They're packing PS2's memory with physics calculations. The balls break as they really should, and I can pull off shots in the game exactly as I pull them off in real life. It's a tad easier than real life, as the cue will tend to go in a straighter line, without the usual mistakes that every human makes. Jump shots are far too easy, but not used very often. It does require knowledge of the game, though, since the balls behave so realistically. The same tricks you use at the table, you'll need to use here.

Sound - not a whole lot of sound in a pool game. One good thing to say about the music: you can turn it off (thankfully). The "crack" of the stick and balls is quite good, though. With music off, and volume turned up, you'd think you were in your own den with a pool table.

Controls - Very easy to pick up. Go through a few rounds in practice, and you'll have it all. There's only two gripes I have about the control. I wish that the shot itself was done with the analog stick. Instead, they use a adjustable power meter and a single button to actually take the shot. The other gripe is the "pointer". It's like a laser that shows where the cueball will be going. While it's handy when first picking up the game, I wish there was a way to turn it off and just eyeball the shot.

Overall, this is an excellent game. I'd recommend it to anyone that would "settle" for a video game as opposed to a real table. I think it's main draw is in the multi-player, as every game is 1-2 players. My friend, who doesn't play much besides Gran Turismo, wouldn't let me turn it off and kept insisting that I rack up another game of 9-ball. Very entertaining, and a good game for a laid-back party.

Game hardly worthy of PS2 launch

If you own Virtual Pool (1 or 2), you will be greatly disappointed in this game. It just doesn't have a convincing look-and-feel of playing a real pool game. It certainly doesn't exercise the graphics capabilities of the PS2 in any signficant manner. The controls are unintiutive and imprecise. The only saving grace in this game is the somewhat interesting "puzzle" mode which provides 25 interesting table designs.

But for standard pool play, it is pretty weak. Get Virtual Pool for PS1 if you really want a pool game for your PS2.

As close as possible to owning a pool table in your house.

If you have been wanting your very own pool table for some time now, but have no chance of getting one, prepare to hail Real Pool as your master and king of your Playstation 2. I'll start with the graphics. Real Pool has without a doubt the most beautiful graphics I have ever seen in a video game. The billiard balls are actually very realistic. They are perfectly round with no jagged egdes on them. They even have the light reflecting off of them! The felt of the table makes you feel like you could just reach out and touch it, it looks so real. Another thing I like about this game is the realistic physics envolved. The billiard balls actually scatter when you hit them like they would in real life. This may not seem so important, but it is when you have to hit a shot at a certain angle to pocket a ball. The game play is unbelieveably great. There is a total of 24 ways to play a game, and they are all 2-player. There is also a puzzle mode, where you have to pocket a certain number of balls in a number of shots on strangely shaped tables. There is nothing at all wrong with this game. The music is good, the controls are good, the graphics are good, it's all good. BOTTOM-LINE: The perfect game for those who want a pool table, but can't get one. Out of the only 5 pool games to ever be released, this is easily the best.

bad game

Well, I rented this game after looking at all these great reviews. I don't understand why this game is getting such good reviews from everyone else. It's horrible. Music = bad. Control = bad. If you want to buy a real game, buy Virtual Pool 2 for your PC... it's much, much better. Skip out on this one. Or do what I did, rent it and find out for yourself.

Avoid this game at all costs!

I rented this game for the P2 being a long time pool player and game player hoping to get a nice pool video game, all I can say is I wish I could go back in time and get my money back that's how bad this game sucks. The controls are awkward at best just one example when the cue ball comes to rest against the rail the cue stick is elavated at a high angle which you can't get down to a reasonable level! If I were you I wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole, except maybe to push it further away.

This s a great game if you enjoy playing pool.I bought it and the whole family likes it.I also have virtual pool for ps1.It's an ok game but since I bought this game I havent played virtual pool.If you like pool and have a ps2 I deffinatly recommend you rent or buy this one.

this is a good game worth the money i think it is one of the most playable games made yet for the playstation 2 i reccomend anyone who has not played this game to check it out as soon as possible.

Real pool is an ok game but only for people that love pool. i find that this game is kind of boring.
