I am a huge fan of the first GUITAR HERO. When I heard that they were making a second one, I knew I just had to get it. Much better song list, challenging modes, and cool new guitars, characters, and venues. GUITAR HERO II is awesome, but they made a lot of the hidden songs impossible to do. It's a good thing that there is a new practice mode so that you can practice them part by part and slowly if you need to. This is a must to get for those who've enjoyed the first!

This game first off, is a real improvement from the first one. The graphics, (even though they don't matter because your to focused on the bottom of the screen to notice) are really goo. They have a cartoonish fell to them. They definetly are top-notch. The lighting of each stage, and the venues that you are taken to. Sometimes, you actually feel that you are Jimi Hendrix.
The gameplay value is something to be cherished. The songs are so well done. This game though, may be a little to tough fro the youngsters. But overall this is a fun game. The addition of practice mode is something you should be grateful for. Songs like the Laid to Rest, and Freebird, and Carry Me Home are songs that should be practiced. Overall this is great gameplay.
The songs are numerous. There is Strutter, Beast and the Harlot, Sweet Child o' Mine, Killing in the Name, You Really Got Me, Institutionalized, Laid to Rest, Crazy on You, Monkey Wrench, Can't you Hear me Knockin', Freebird, Shout to the Devil and so many others. There are though, 55 songs in total. Quite an improvement from last years.
The replay value is pretty high. You can replay on a harder level to unlock the store and an extra category "Face Melter" There are plenty of cool guitars to buy like John Lennon's.
Overall this game is awesome and should be bought for any rockers that aspire to be rockers. This is fun for the whole family. Play it on New Years, Christmas, Parties, even Thanksgiving. Just buy this game.

One of the Greatest Games Ever Invented!!

I purchased this game for my husband for Christmas. He used to play guitar in his younger days and I thought he might enjoy it. Turns out that we BOTH enjoy it because it is simply one of the most ingenious games ever created. The guitar looks like a real "mini" guitar with colored buttons for frets. You play along with real songs (cover versions of them that sound almost exactly like the real thing). It does take practice in the beginning, but you wind up feeling like you really are playing the guitar. I love that you can choose your characters on screen as well as name your band. You can pick the type of guitar you want to play on screen and even rock out in different venues (my husband likes playing at "Stonehenge!"). We eventually wound up buying Guitar Hero 1 and another guitar so that we could have more songs to choose from and be able to play together. We are now having "battle of the bands" with adult friends who want to come over and play, too (which turns out to be hilarious after a few beers).
If you are a parent considering buying this game for a child (I suggest 9 and older), I still recommend it. The songs are edited, clean versions of the originals (check out the song listings if you are unsure of what the game features), and I feel the whole set-up of the game might inspire some new musicians. I know I developed a greater sense of respect for music and guitar playing after purchasing Guitar Hero 2.
great game but lacks great songs

I have been a big fan of Guitar Hero ever since I first played it as a demo at Circuit City. After that I would play wherever I could, but because I didn't have a PS2 I couldn't buy it. However, yesterday I saw an ad for the PS2 at an INCREDIBLE price. I couldn't resist and finally purchased it along with GH2. I got home and played it. I had some real fun rocking out to tunes like Strutter. Gameplay is great and all, but my only dissapointment was the song list. I mean, who's heard of 'John the Fisherman' or 'Pyscobilly Freakout'? Hopefully on GH3 RedOctane will put less hardcore metal and more classic favourites. I still recommend this game though.

I hate seeing bad reviews because a person bought a product without knowing what to expect from it. First of all, if you're thinking of buying Guitar Hero 2 because you want to listen to songs you know, you'd be better off listening to the radio. If you're buying it because you want to play songs that you know, you might as well go out and buy a real guitar. I'm sure you can find a beginner/used guitar for roughly the same price. If you are afraid of being exposed to new things, or are not up for a challenge, again, this game is not for you. The thing to keep in mind is that this is a GAME. The songs were picked because they are challenging, not because most of the population is familiar with them. Popular music tends to contain a lot of power chords, and while the songs may be catchy, that does not make for good game play. What it comes down to is this: if you liked Guitar Hero, you'll like Guitar Hero 2. It's the same concept, and some of the methods and options are even improved upon. The songs are new, so read through the song list, and if you don't think you can stand hearing them, stick with the first game. Personally, I love both games.
How do people say the soundtrack is lacking?

the soundtrack is equal if not BETTER than the first game. and the reason why RedOctane cannot get big bands like Metallica, System of a Down, and Led Zeppelin is because they have to pay those bands a lot of money for using one of their songs. obviously those bands are NOT going to be in a video game for that reason. in this game u still have bands like Rage Against the Machine, Avenged Sevenfold, Every Time I Die, Danzig. those are all great bands!
Great for my kiddo's 14th B-day!

I've gotten to the point where I realize that the gulf between what's cool, and what I think is cool is so vast that I can no longer buy gifts for my teenage daughter. Well, let's just say that picking something that she both likes and will actually USE is difficult. That's the key since she's very polite and would not want to hurt anyone's feelings. The key is "does she use it". And yes, she really is jamming the frets off this game. I've tried it myself. It's pretty fun, and quite honestly is making me consider getting her DNA checked. Because, there's no way she can be THAT good, and I can be THAT bad at something like this and have us actually be related. So on that note, I need to go talk to her mother...
(ok, just kidding. It's a great game, good fun, and we all love it. The older crowd--40ish--will recognize a lot of songs. And if you're younger and like rock music, you will likely enjoy this set up.) It was well worth the small cost for something that's getting so much action...
Rocking Out Again

The second release in this game series goes above and beyond our expectations of the first game. This time, you can tool around with a friend in three different modes giving people the chance to play the Lead, Rhythm or Bass guitar parts of a song.
The song list gets a whole lot more metal this time around, going with songs by Suicidal Tendencies or Lamb of God. There are the few exceptions to the hardcore like songs by the Police or Stray Cats, but they don't rock any less.
Game play changes a little this time around, the techniques required to play are a bit easier to control, however the songs themselves are decidedly more difficult.
The best thing about this sequel however is the Store. In the first game you made money in Career mode but everything you unlocked for one level of difficulty had to be unlocked again as you moved up. In GH2, your money just piles up and so do the things you can unlock. There are a lot more songs and guitars this time around to spend your money on, as well as two new characters [that can be unlocked].
Graphics: The graphics haven't changed much from the first game to the second; however there are some differences in the artwork and presentation this time around.
Controls: You can opt to buy the game without the controller this time, if you've already got one. If you do choose to buy the whole package, the new guitar is lighter and a bit smaller than the first one. You could also shell out for the Guitar Mania wireless flying V - if you're into that sort of thing.
Flow: I think one of the things that made me laugh the hardest this time around is the small cut scenes as you change concert venues. As for the songs themselves, they're not always in the order I'd expect them to be by difficulty, so you may have a hard time with one song (Woman by Wolfmother perhaps?) but have no trouble rocking out on the next five.
Fun Factor: No question this game is fun. Even if you're not a fan of contemporary rhythm games, make an exception and try this one out. It's a great party game too!
Replay Value: The best thing is that it's a game you can pick up, play a few songs and put back down and still feel like you've gotten a little gaming done without wasting half your day. Besides there's always something left to unlock it seems.

I played Guitar Hero 1 and I found out that the that the people who put the music on the game, redid the music and got other singers to sing the songs. Not the original singers like Ozzy Ozborn. But they all sound like the real singers. But on Guitar hero 2 THE SINGING SUCKS!!! Come on that doesnt sound like Ozzy on the song "War Pigs" not one bit. Same with "Free bird" Just terrible. But I have to give some credit to "TROGDOR" the singer sounded just like Strong Bad. But overall this game was awsome. I was expecting some ACDC songs, or some Metallica, and definatly some System of a down.
Amazing game. Some controller compatibility issues.

I can't really say anything that other people haven't said. This game is amazing. Buy it! :)
The one thing to be aware of is that the Guitar Mania line of controllers does not seem to work. I've got a wired Guitar Mania controller and it doesn't work at all with this game. Someone reviewed the wireless Guitar Mania controller and said it doesn't work either.
So, if you have the original game plus a Mania-series controller as your second controller, you will probably want to buy the game+controller bundle. Or else you won't be able to play multiplayer until you head on back to the store later (and if you're like me you'll be angry on the second visit).
