Great NWN expansion pack that could be a stand alone title!

I recently picked up the NWN Diamond pack, and was most interested in the Hordes of the Underdark expansion pack. I have been reading a lot of Forgotten Realms novels by Salvatore taking place in the underdark and wanted to take up a CRPG adventure in that same setting the realms. Oddly enough, I played this expansion pack before I played the orginal NWN or SoU! What is shocking, is that made absolutely no difference.
HoTU was a great experience from start to finish. Its a very involved D&D style rpg with real time fighing, which initially took some getting used to after having played mainly turn based rpg's in the past (ala Temple of Elemental Evil and Pool of Radiance 2). Once adapted, the different battle system became a refreshing change of pace compared to traditional turn based styles. There are multitudes of weapon, armor and accessory findings and combinations, which adds depth to the game. The graphics are excellent for this style of game and made good use of lighting and visual effects. Newer games will outshadow HoTU in the graphics dept, but this game isnt just about good looks. The gameplay is smooth, enjoyable and good ol rpg fun. The story is intense and keeps you playing to obtain objectives and work toward the goals. The designers and programmers did a good job of rendering the subterranean realm of the drow known as the underdark, far beneath the surface of Toril. There is also a portion of the game that takes place in Cania, the 8th level of hell. Also well done and well designed, I believe that segment to be of the most challenging ones in the game!
Often times main evil or "boss" fights in CRPG's can leave something to be desired. This was not the case in HoTU. The main battles were epic, and definitely proved entertaining and also challenging. I suppose my only complaint about the game is that you have virtually no control over your party members action and they act independently in combat for the most part. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, its just different from what I am used to from my party based RPG past. Nonetheless, I have to say this was one of the most enjoyable rpg experiences I have had. I am looking forward to NWN2! Not to mention the other expansion packs I have yet to play in the Diamond pack. I would highly recommend this game!
Earn your wings and show them off to your friends! NOT!

If you're going to play this in the single player game then you have nothing to worry about. It's really fun if you like playing by yourself. :)
If you were planning on playing online with your friends and taking the Red Dragon Disciple (a new class that allows the player to become 1/2 dragon and grow a set of wings) then be ready for some heartache. Once you've downloaded the most recent patch, version 1.61, and spent your time (how much is *your* time worth?) building your character up to wing status you'll discover that you can't login because this class is broken! Keep that in mind, before buying this expansion pack for little Jonnie or Janie (or yourself ;) ) if you play online and wanted to "wow" everyone with your wings.
Everytime a bell rings, someone finds a bug in NWN:HotU!
Good, but run it on a high end machine

HOTU is a good add-on but on my system (a 1.4G Dell, .75 G mem, 32MB Geforce) it would come to a near standstill in scenes with many NPCs. Try waiting 15 seconds in between responses for conservations, ouch!
This was frustrating because, otherwise, the game was quite good.
Great Game

Most excellent...but pretty much always crashes. That, of course, is no problem for me because it is nothing for me to see the problem and fix it. I must say, for the average gamer it might be tough to fix. You need to update drivers, uninstall, delete adware/spyware, delete in registry, and reinstall to be sure that you get it working. Once it works, it is a fun game to play.
Great

Overall, NWN and the expansions are the best D&D roleplay game ever. Period.

I've never been keen on the local D&D groups, as some, not all, of the people are a little odd. But I love the game setup. The Neverwinter Nights series has been really good and my husband and I love to play the games. At times I prefer the older style of Baldur's Gate, but the 3D style of Neverwinter does allow for more visual detail even if the controls are a bit confusing at times.
The game itself keeps with the series and I hope they put out more like this.

When Neverwinter Night first came out, it was not all what it was cracked up to. It took about a year of them patching the game up and plugging all the holes until they finally made a good game that shipped with a Great Module.
Hordes of the Underdark is a great expansion. Ton's of Detail, not overly huge areas, Good use of the game engine to tell the story, finally some fixes that everyone wanted to see and just a good game to sit down and play a few times though.
Finally doing something right.
Worth every cent!

The "Hordes" expansion was a lot of game play and tons of new abilities. The plot is pretty good and the new development options are impressive.
There are some bugs in the game, so you'll want to save frequently, but I'm hoping that a patch will fix them soon!
Enjoy!

This expansions truly brings out the best of Neverwinter Nights. The levels have an epic and satisfing feel, the gameplay is solid and fun and the many plot twists keep players on their toes. Many new features come with this expansion, such as six new prestige classes, many new monsters, new character customization options, skys in outdoor environments, wizard robes, five new tilesets, increased henchman interaction and an awsome 20+ hour campaign. The game has also had a slight increase in graphics, not earthshattering, but their nice. What Shadows of Undrentide did to streamline gameplay, Hordes of the Underdark does even better, making it an all around better gaming experience than the original. This expansion is well worth $30, I highly recommend it.
This is what NWN should have been

I liked the original Neverwinter Nights well enough, but there were a LOT of disappointments considering the amount of hype that surrounded it. I wasn't very impressed by the first expansion either; it was more of the same, only shorter. Hordes of the Underdark, however, gives credence to the saying "Third time's the charm".
This expansion proves that Bioware actually listened to the fans and added a great deal of content that was requested. The new story is fairly typical of fantasy games, but still enjoyable, particularly for the characters. The gameplay is significantly improved by new classes, spells, equipment, and more.
While, in my opinion, the first expansion was forgettable, Hordes of the Underdark will redefine Neverwinter Nights as a much more enjoyable game.
