Excellent Enhancements

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 7

I've read the reviews that pop up here regarding NW: SoU being too easy for their existing characters. Bah, I say, Bah. The designers stated numerous times that they were creating a quest for new characters. The true enhancements, of course, come into play in Multiplayer mode, where the original shined anyway. New spells, new feats, and best of all, prestige classes. Definitely an improvement!

Note on Joe Gromadski's review.

SoU (Shadow of Undertide) expansion was essentially a separate game from the original Neverwinter Nights. You were not supposed to play it using your old character from original NWN campaign. Starting from lvl 1 is what Bioware intended. I played through it as a monk and found it to be moderately challenging and not troublesome like you describe. In fact, towards the end, fights were easy (especially with Deekin watching my back :)
Hordes of the Underdark is, however, designed for 15th lvl character, so you'll need to use your favorite SoU character.

The weakest Neverwinter title yet

I had far more technical problems with this expansion than with the original or the previous expansion pack (yes, I installed the latest patches). The game locked up several times, my character turned green from enemies and stayed that way, I unintentionally lost my (out of control killing machine) henchmen, my inventory would open to a blank screen about half of the time. While I am a big fan of the original Neverwinter nights, and I really liked the first add on, the technical problems brought on by this expansion were too severe to allow me to characterize it as anything other than uncooked. Perhaps this game was squarly aimed at powergamers that care less for story than I do, but the NPCs seemed far more bland and two dimensional than in the original or previous game (with the notable exception of your henchmen, who don't seem to be able to shut up), the game universe seemed less expansive and more limited than with the previous modules. The game felt like it was rushed to market too fast and that the story was jotted down on the back of a napkin, or made up as they went along (the story felt crafted in the previous games).

Do NOT buy this defective expansion pack !!!!

This game starts out great .. just like the original Neverwinter Nights and the first expansion pack ... Shadows of Undrentide.
However, about halfway through the game, the NWMain.exe file starts
corrupting and the game freezes and you can NOT go any further in the game. Check out Bioware's technical support website about this game ... thousands of player complaints. Bioware/Atari are aware of these bugs and are doing NOTHING about fixing them. Buy this game only if you want to be VERY disappointed halfwat through the game!

What a great game!

First off I'd like to say that the minimum system requirements on the box should say P2 450 and 256mb ram with a 32mb video card. My system is a Athlon 600mhz, 512mb ram and a 64mb GeForce2 video card and the game looks great. Some of the cut scenes were a little choppy and when there is a lot of action on the screen it slows down a little but nothing to bad. The graphics look a little bit better than they did with the original. Anyways this game is totally awesome great story line along with a great engine. If you have the money buy this game it brilliant.

If you want to know how NWN is in single player, read all the other reviews. Now the game is out for some time now, had its bunch of patches (easy and automatic install) I decided to look at the online community. I was totally amazed what people have done using this engine. If you enjoyed the single player go at use Multiplayer over the Internet. There are worlds out there and most of them beat any of the "pay to play" MMORGS by miles. With NWN you only invest once for months on months of fun.

Decent game overall

Bioware sacrificed multi-player for a really good single player campaign. Their sacrifice was not in vain. They did overall do a good job.
There have been additions that are kind of neat (ie "flying"). You can hit upto level 40 now. The storyline is better than SOU and it won't put you to sleep like SOU.

However the game is not without its flaws. The game is inconsitent with the origional NWN (ie same characters have different races, religions compared to the origional). Bioware did a bad job with the origional henchmen. Everyone's favorate paladin is kinda screwed over too.

If you excuse the many many minor errors the game is overall decent.

This is a review for Hoards only(it should say at the bottom referring to Hoards of Underdark version or something) Aside from the plot, thier is a bit too much power in this game. I prefer classic RPG's with heros, not gods to be the central character. If playing V P I recommend being as redundant as possible(for macho RPG purpose I pick a powerhouse Champion Paladin for riteiousness and spells with 6 fighter levels for devastating sword play (the HoU play guide has wimpy paladin characters with only 12 strenght. In PVP the more similar classes you stack together the more devastaing you are. a Rouge/CoT/fighter just won't cut it, you should be reduntant and pick three warrior classes, three mage classes or three thief classes. both for RPG purpose and Powergame purpose. It is incredibly advantagious. My CoT/Pal/Figh character can hit hard and acurate like a fighter, can heal like a Champ and can cast and resist like a paladin. WMaster, Fighter Barbarian works well with this too(use the cute Cleric as your healer and the Bard as your spell caster) The class system is great, however the demi-god status isn't. I don't play RPG's to be a god, I play Populous or Light/Dark to be a god. Baldur's Gate had this flaw. Other than that, it is a good romp in the Hellish Undermountain and Underdark. Epic battles against terrifying foes. Drizzt doesn't show up because he is already on the surface.

Neverwinter series is the best PC RPG series period

They actually did it, they made the god-like RPG, Neverwinter Nights, vastly better with this expansion. Friends and family will take a back seat as you continue your quest, good or evil, with an array of new prestige classes, equipment, spells, epic levels, and an excellent story to boot. My only gripe is that this game is annoyingly difficult at times for anyone that relies mostly on spells or steatlh.
