This game is the first serious game I got into since buying my xbox 360. It is probably one of the best video games I have ever played, having owned everything from PS2, regular Xbox, Nintendo 64 and all the oldies.
The games VASTNESS can't really be described. There is a general storyline to follow, but you can choose to follow it or not, completing the main missions of the side missions in any order really. You can upgrade your characters with weapons, armors and skills (lots and lots of stuff), you control them in your ambushes to take out enemies, you can control their powers or let the AI do it for you (the AI is really sophisticated too).
I think I liked the control you get over this game the most. Throughout the game, your character has to make various decisions, and the decisions you make effect the rest of the gameplay, really cool. When two of your teammembers are in danger, you have to choose which one to save, for example. If you can't save one, they die and you can't choose them again. But you'll talk about them to the other team members on your ship. Soooo realistic, very cool. When you catch spies you can decide to kill them or let them go, but if you let them go they may come back to haunt you later. You can talk to the press or not, be an upstanding soldier or a corrupt renegade soldier, each comes with its own perks.
I just finished this game with 40+ hours of gameplay, and I totally plan on starting it again, customizing my character, making different decisions, etc. Really great game...I highly recommend.
Fun but way too many gameplay issues to ignore

As a long time gamer and fan of Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic game, I thought I would love Mass Effect. In truth, the main story line is great and the game's "conversation system" is essentially flawless and excellent. But unfortauntely nearly everything else about the game needs lots and lots of work. The main story is SHORT for an RPG type game. You can complete the story line in 7 hours and I'm not exagerating. The side missions are as generic as can possibly be made: the levels (both indoor and outside) during optional side missions all look the same and the enemies, you got it, all look the same.
That would be forgivable but the lame enemy and team AI is not so easily forgiven. Enemies are braindead. Most will stand there and shoot or wose simply run toward you. That makes for easy target practice. The game at any difficulty level is easy -- simply grab the weapons with the greatest accuracy and stand behind objects for protection. There's simply not enough _genuine_ strategy needed to win at combat. Your teammates are just as dumb as your enemies and they will simply stand in front of you even when you direct them to move out of the way.
In sptite of the many faults, I enjoyed the main story. I dont think the game is worth more than 30 bucks retail given the short length of the game. Replayability is fairly pointless since there are only a few decisions you can make at the end that really matter and you can simply load a save to see the various endings. Its a good game but not remotely worth a 5 star rating.
For good old RPG lovers (not turn based)

Your Crazy if you don't at least give this game a try. This is not only a game for RPG fans but action fans as well. To start you get to completely customize your character. Male or female, scars, hair, appearance and character history. There are several standard classes to choose from, some a specific class, others a mix of two classes. All balance nicely and provide different experiences.
You get the assistance of seven other characters, and you get to choose two of them to assist you on quests. You get access to most of these characters early in the game if you spend a lot of time doing side quests at the Citadel the first time you are there. Wrex is by far my favorite.
The controls are really easy to pick up on. Triggers are your typical - Left, aim down the barrel; Right, fires. Holding down the bumpers pause the game and allow you to change weapons or choose different powers for you and your squad. The D-pad gives commands to your squad on the fly. I won't really comment on the story, just know that it is awesome. The one thing that that is both a positive and negative is the dialogue. Positive because the questions or answers that you give are easy to choose without a lot of reading and then hearing what you just read. The negative is that the short version that you choose to say is sometimes miss leading, and comes out different in the conversation.
The combat is fantastic. Very action oriented, but you can still pause (if you want to) to change weapons, use powers, or issue commands to your squad. The great part is even if you do pause it is really fast to select what you want and get right back into the action (literally 5secs.), or if you want to think about it more you can take your time. The cover system is pretty good, though I found myself sticking to things that I didn't want to sometimes. I hate to even give a negative because the combat is so good and challenging. However, if I had to complain about one thing it is that the enemy AI usually charges you. Sometimes they will use the cover but usually they just run at you. The good thing is that you squads AI is really good, and does a pretty good job of using their powers at the right times, though you can direct them if you want.
There is a boatload of equipment and upgrades to choose from. The menu system and inventory is easy to manage, and doesn't cause to many headaches.
Apart from the main story there are tons of side quests, which usually have interesting stories, but mainly involve going to a place, shooting some bad guys, then resolving a conflict or finding something. One thing I will say is that there have been a number of times when I have to set down my controller and really think about how I'm going to resolve this conflict. Trying to figure out who is right and who is wrong is sometimes very gray. And there is a moral system in the game, but doesn't seem to really affect the game play too much. I don't want to give too much away but you will know what I mean when you play the game.
There have been a lot of complaints about the driving portion of the game. Basically the different planet you visit require exploring and you get in the Mako (a 6 wheel tank that can go anywhere... I mean anywhere) and drive around to find key locations found on the map. The part that stinks is the Mako can't shoot down. You have to be at the right angle if you want to shoot something below you. While this is annoying, I found it easy to compensate for and was blowing away guys in no time.
With easily 40+hrs of game play if you do the side quests it will keep you entertained for a long time. I could go on and on about Mass Effect, it is the best Xbox 360 game I have played to date.
AMAZING!

Ok I got this game for my birthday and being that I've never been a fan of role playing games I wasn't looking forward to playing it. Man am I glad I changed my mind! While Mass Effect can still be considered an rpg it plays like a shooter but that's just the tip of the iceberg with this game. The interactive dialog, the character customization that allows for everything from eye color to jaw width to hair style etc., and the graphics all of these things and more are part of what make this game a must play for any and every gamer. The biggest seller of it is the fact that every decision you make in the game has a consequence that will effect the later dialog and outcome of the game. I can say truthfully that I've played this game through at least 8 times now and every single time I've discovered something that I didn't catch before. One of the other promising aspects is that this is supposed to be the first in a trilogy that is sad to allow you to use you're same character throughout all three games. The only bad things that I can find to say about this game, and believe me there are very few, are that throughout the games you'll find random loading happen and also there's a bit of an issue during cut scenes where textures have a delay in loading. But those are small complaints when you look at the full scale of this game amazon only allows as high as a 5 star rating but I'd give this game a 10 star one if I could ;)

This game is absolutely mind blowingly great. First, it actually takes a whole play through to kind of figure things out...making at least one replay a real possibility. Secondly, the story is really, really good. Your decisions actually change the outcome of the game and there are consequences and it is almost never obvious what the right choice is going to be. Sometimes the choice is permanent, too. I tried changing the final out come by replaying the ending and I got my first ending again. That character is locked into that story line for Mass Effect 2.
Also let me say the Xbox achievement system is awesome here. Played 20 hours the first time through and only racked up about 500 points. Meaning, I missed stuff :) Sure some of them are replay type of achievements but some of them are not.
A great, great game. I'd recommend playing as a female as that actor's voice work is very strong.
Phenomenal

This is by far one of the BEST RPG/style games ever released for the 360. Tied, possibly, with Oblivion, Mass Effect takes the player on a galaxy-hopping adventure as the background story unfolds with each new mission. Could it be better? Sure. Allowing training for ANY weapon regardless of class would be nice. Also, the overall learning curve is VERY STEEP. Those few items aside, Mass Effect draws the player in deeper and deeper with each passing gaming episode. Not for everyone, since not everyone is an RPG fan, but for the RPG fan, it is a surefire hit. Recommended!

I'd been looking forward to playing this game for months before it came out. So when it hit the store I picked up a copy and it did not leave my x-box for weeks and weeks. I am a casual gamer, but I'm very avid about great games like this.
If you are wondering whether or not this game will be fun for you, it will! Mass Effect has something for everybody. The graphics are outstanding, and navigating through a galaxy is soo much fun! There are 'choose your own adventure' moments, the dialogue system is fluid and great. The story line is one of the best I've ever experienced in a game. The intense level of character customization is unmatched by any I've seen. The action and third person shooter playability are outstanding. The weapons, bionic powers, and armor are fun and varied enough to make it interesting all the way till the end. Plus, you get to build your team, so you're not just stuck with the type of character you create, you really can get it all. I did a LOT of the side missions before finishing the main story line, because I didn't want this game to end.
The only think that sucks in this game is the driving system. There are a few (very few) times you have to drive your rover around a planet over rocky terrain, and its horrible. If you're on flat ground its fine, but this is something they need to address for the sequel.
If you enjoy a great story, a good score (sound effects) in a game and want to get drawn into a game with great graphics and playability - GET THIS GAME!

Pretty boring. Or, pretty but boring. The gameplay is very slow and tedious and isn't very entertaining. Sure, the graphics are nice during cutscenes, but otherwise they're nothing special.
Late to the game.

I've played RPG's in the past and know all about "experience points" and over time upgrading your character. Dialog boxes and interaction in this game are inventive and make for an interesting game. Different races you bring on various missions also has a great twist and the varity of controls you have over your "squad" is excellent. With 11 plus hours in this game ultimately it fails because the targeting system, especially for the vehicle that lands on every look-a-like planet is feeble. I can see the blue circle, but it means nothing and the shots fired with the cannon or machine gun don't go anywhere near where you are aiming. This makes the game difficult at the Geth Outpost where rocket launchers and snipers abound (.....no repairs for the vechicle either). If you do manage to wipe everyone out the Geth ship takes you out fast. Starting at the same point over and over with a transport that's akin to Drunken Niko Bellic all the time is no fun either. If I take out 3 or 4 out of 10 enemies how 'bout I only have 7 to 6 guys next time around? I realize all the acne riddled gamers will deride this review, but I just want to continue the game not play the same lame targeting system area over and over. Not looking forward to continuing this game.
