King of Fighters Dream Match 99 (KOFDM99) is my current favorite of all the King of Fighters titles (though Garou:Mark of the Wolves is my favorite SNK fighter overall), and that says a lot.
Basically, KOFDM99 is really the Dreamcast version of the Neo Geo game of KOF98:The Slugfest. This confuses a lot of people. KOFDM:99 and King of Fighters '99 Evolution (which is the real KOF99) are two totally different games.
KOFDM99 has just about EVERY character that ever appeared in an official King of Fighters game. That's a whole 38 distinct characters, if you're keeping score. This is the definitive King of Fighters title, and probably the best for 2-player competitions.
KOF99:Evolution and KOF2000 have their merits, but because of their smaller rosters and modified style, they fall a little short of KOF:DM99. While KOF:99E has better effects on the DC (KOF2000 has yet to be ported), KOF:DM99 still holds it own. The graphics easily take on the like of Capcom's greats like SF:Alpha 3. Obviously it doesn't have the pizzazz of the newer 2D DC fighters, the gameplay and character design has always set SNK apart from Capcom or Arc Systems (makers of Guilty Gear).
SNK has always had the most colorful roster, each character distinct with their own robust (if sometimes disturbing) personality that fuels the game. Coupled with good animation, great music, and top-notch controls (minimal learning curve) anyone who considers themselves a 2D fighting fan NEEDS this title. King of Fighters may not be as popular as Capcom's titles, but in Japan it's still one of the most popular series around and for good reason. KOF:DM99 continues the legacy of excellent SNK fighting games.
This is a solid 2d fighter for 2d fighting fans.

This game is really pretty cool, and comes from snk, a company not as mainstream as capcom, but the quality of their games is as good(maybe a little less or more)Graphically, the characters are drawn perfectly and look cool.My only gripe here is that some of the moves skip a couple of frames, but seeing as the game is so fast, it really doesnt matter at all.the sound is really cool, and the music is excellent.Controls are nice, but supercombos can be hard to do if your used to 3d fighters or streetfighter.Pick this up if your a fan or if you like good fighting games.
My Fav. Fighter to date

this was the first game I bought after I got a DC for Xmas and from the moment I plugged in to the day I sold my DC, KOF DM'99 will remain the top fighting game to me. This game was complex and deep yet so easy and so fun to play. This game is best enjoyed if you have the original DC arcade stick. May not be as flashy as capcom but the gameplay and strategy elements most definately make up for it. I only hope that SNK revives or keeps the KOF series alive on the current and future generation consoles
Could've been better

Five yrs ago, the toughest SNK superstars faced off in tag-team action in the excellent arcade game KOF 94. Now the series is back, but it hasn't learned anything new. The KOF:DM99(man that's a long title!)chugs away with tired fighting mechanics and subpar graphics. King features characters from Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting. The fights are fun, but you still can't change characters during a match. Technically King's loaded with deficencies, most notably choppy, slowdown-filled 2D sprite graphics. For a part of an essentially 16 bit game to a 128 bit system, these flaws are inexcuseable and baffling. It's nice that the DC isn't limiting itself to polygon-only 3D fighting titles. But compared to Marvel vs. Capcom, Dream is a nightmare.
It is worth your money

This game rules although is only a 16-bit game. The best way to play this game is by using the arcade stick. Using the regular DC controller can be very difficult, especially when doing the special moves. If you are a SNK freak then this is a must have for your collection, but if you are not an SNK fan then give it a try.
Almost perfect

Well first of all I own both Dream Match 99 for the DC which irecently got and i also own KOF 98 for the PS an imported ver. Onething that dissapointed me was that the American version of DM 99 for DC doesn't have blood. The japanese version has blood. Plus on the American ver of DM 99 is that if your the first player your stuck using the same lamo color. Nope cant change it. Unless u use the 2nd controller. Overall lots of improvements over the graphics especially the backgrounds. Overall the game lacks the sound and lacks no blood. If SNK of America keeps this up Im defently not buying it, If i were you i'd get an import of the game. Now one thing better about the KOF 98 for PS is that it's arcade perfect. Loading times are more improved. Voices sound alot better. But the oly problem is that the controller tends to get of your nerves. END
Great Game

I have realized too many people are trying to compare this to SNES or Playstation graphics. I have found this to be false the animation is superior and the graphics are a huge improvement. The only really large downside is how cheap some characters can be....even in the hands of a beginner some characters can spell certain death for even a seasoned vetran of fighting games.(Ralph,Kyo,Takuma, and especially OMEGA RUGAL). This can be very frusterating when the other person is using one of them. The attacks look really unique, the only downside to this is all the attacks have the same motion to enter.(Think Ryu and his fireball.) Another noticable downside is the horrible ending for all that you get at the end of the game I would at least expect a congratulations, instead I get Omega Rugal laughing madly for no apparent reason. This ending is the same for all difficulty levels. The team battles are a neat addition to the ongoing series of 2d fighters. However experiance comes through on team battles since if you lose you get special advantages such as increased power and really powerful special attacks. I really think it is worth picking up.

I was surprised at the lack of quality of this game.
I felt like I was playing a Super Nintendo. The graphics are completely flat. The controls are cumbersome.
I was a huge KOF - Arcade fan. I dropped many quarters into the various lineups of KOF and enjoyed it greatly. I bought the KOF 99 sight unseen based on my past KOF experience.
I did not buy the Dreamcast to see 32 bit graphics and uninspirational gameplay. Play this after an hour of Soul Calibur and try to stiffle the laughter.
I'm just upset that Wal-Mart doesn't let you return video games. Used CD store: here I come.
I'm a tolerant gamer, but this was flat out pathetic

My problem with this game was the fact that there were virtually no improvements from King of Fighters '97. Actually, now that i think about it, '97 was probably a little better. Oh, and that ridiculous intro at the beginning of the game isn't fooling anybody. This was a real disappointment to me and I took it back after the first day. Thank god for exchanges.
A CLASSIC SERIES COMES TO SEGA

SNK has brought this port of KofF'98 to the dreamcast in perfect form! People say arcade perfect, naw better than the arcade. The game doesn't slow down and the replay value is off the chart! If you have a NEO-GEO pocket color with KofF R-2 this is a must have because of download and upload features with the Dreamcast.
