Excellent Game!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 2

This game is EXCELLENT! It makes the original Underground almost not even worth owning. You can tune every single aspect of your car in this game, from how your nitrous is used, to suspension setups... You can even tune your ECU and Turbo to modify your powerband for different types of racing and different tracks!!!! They have added an option that lets you run your car on a dyno to see it's acceleration curve and horsepower/torque outputs, 0-60 time, 0-100 time, etc etc. This really helps you tune your car to perform! The physics in this game are AWESOME. I use a Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP steering wheel w/ force feedback. This game is as close to driving as you can get without going outside and getting in your own vehicle! They've added tons of new vehicles to choose from, including some SUVs like the Escalade and Hummer. You can also customize the interior of your car from the audio equipment to the gauges on your dashboard! They've added many more exterior customizations as well, such as nitrous purge. They've also added some new race types, such as URL (underground racing league -- you get to race on closed circuit race tracks with no traffic!) and Street-X (basically all out racing on a drift track). Perhaps the best improvement over the first Underground, is that you get to explore the city! Race your way up a mountain through suburbs and rural areas, blaze down the freeway at 200mph, or blow by traffic on a crowded city street! There are also many opponents on the road that are just looking for a race. If you pull up next to one, you can call them on your cel phone and get at it! You can also sign contracts for certain companies. They will give you sign on bonuses and new vehicles. Instead of simply accessing all of your vehicle upgrades through the main game menu like in the original Underground, you actually have to drive to body shops, decal shops, specialty shops, car dealerships, and performance shops to buy your stuff! Another cool thing about this game over the original Underground is that, when you get on a DVD or magazine cover, you can drive your car around to where you want the picture taken and take the picture how you want it! Adjust the camera angle, open doors/hood/trunk, catch yourself in mid-donut with smoke flying out the back.. It's up to you!

While there are a lot of good things to Underground 2, there are still some things that are lacking. These are the reasons I did not give the game a five star overall rating:

1) I have a P4 2.8 ghz (overclocked to 3ghz) computer w/ 2 gigs dual channel DDR400 and GeForce 5700 256mb graphics card. Even with this setup, I can only run in 800x600 mode with medium-high graphics settings. If I bump it up any further, the game gets so laggy that I can't even move the mouse cursor accurately! Despite this, the graphics are actually pretty good in 800x600 mode.

2) Too much use of slang/ebonics. I feel like I'm seventeen again, living in the ghetto of Philadelphia after having moved out of my parents' house. And they don't even make it sound good, it sounds like preppy-type people trying to force themselves to talk that way. Nothing like hearing "So, what up dawg? Anytime you wanna race, just hit me up on my cellie!" coming from someone who sounds like they should be saying "Hey Buffy, it is such a glorious day.. We must retire to the back yard and engage in some badmitten!" (I'm not making this as a discriminatory statement -- if you play the game, you'll see what I mean!)

3) It's a pain in the butt to have to drive all over the map to a store every time something else is unlocked. It's kind of cool for a while, but then it gets old.

4) While they have some new gear, you're going notice a TON of stuff from the original Underground.

5) No cops! I'm not a fan of having cops all over the place, but every once in a while it would be nice to outrun the law!

6) After a while, it just kind of gets boring. I played for about a week straight, and haven't been back since.

All in all, this is a great game. The sound is EXCELLENT, especially if you have a nice 5.1 or better system with a great subwoofer. The force feedback usage/feel is GREAT! The game physics are awesome -- when you slide around, you can actually feel the "snap-back" as you come out of the slide, just like you do in real life! The graphics are great, but the performance is HORRIBLE!

If you buy this game, I can almost guarantee that you will like it. However, I can't guarantee that you will play it for very long :P

Racing in an immersive 3D city.

Ever wished you could own several high performance "Tuner"
cars and race them on the highway and streets in your city?
Need for Speed Underground 2 is an amazing simulation that starts with the purchase of a stock import and building it to a powerful racer with all of the name brand high performance goodies added as you make a name for yourself earning cash racing on the streets. With what must be thousands of options and performance tweaks your car will be unique.

There is a lot of game play countless tracks winding through a 3D city plus free roaming exploration with solid car physics, spectacular particle effects, it took an adrenaline filled week to play through to the end. This is a single player racing sim that will stay on my computer for a long time.

Er.. Online Play?... Your skill will build a win rating on the EA site and earn unique online upgrades for your car. Complex slow online browser interface, too few opponents on a track at one time. Forced to wait in the online racing "Lobby" at the end of each short race. CD Registration/Email locking with a central server. EA creates a password for your player name and email address + birthdate and gender. Don't lose your password and player name Write it down. lose it and you will need a new CD. If you host a game on your machine make sure you have enough CPU power/RAM EA will make sure you do or block you until reinstall if you don't. NFS Underground 2 is the ninth release in the series. Need for Speed Hot Pusuit 2 (7th) is where you'll see me online.

If you want online play, pass on this

The single player racing for this game is good, with decent graphics and good sound effects. However, if you want to race online, forget it. Don't waste your money. I don't know exactly what the problem is, but it is practically impossible to find an another player to race with online. Judging by the number of "help me" message posts on EA's website, many others have the same problem. No one seems to have any answers.

I bought this game to race online, as they advertised, so it's a frustrating waste of $20.00.

This game suck.

Max Payne like cutscenes + GTA style gameplay = NFS:U2 suck big time. You'll be spending a lot of time cruising the city before getting on the actual race. It's such a drag. I literally fell asleep whileplaying it. I wonder why the developers don't keep the mechanics of the game like the first one. My advice to them: If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

best racing game i ever played

What a LAME Brooke Burke...

Before my rant, let me make this disclaimer: I love the game. The driving is fun, the environment is detailed, and overall driving experience is excellent, and great fun.

THAT SAID...
Brooke Burke is, for some unknown reason, being pushed throughout every image or mention of this game in any forum (including television) that I've seen. She doesn't do anything but detract from the quality of the game; or, rather, the way that she was included in this game is such a joke that it only serves to lower your impression of it. I have to force myself around looking at these cartoon, still, pseudo-realistic images of her to get to my enjoyment of all other facets of the game. Thank God I have this skill. I'm sure we'll all be fine without seeing her animated in the game (even though the girls starting each game are animated smoothly-enough), but it's an insult to our collective intelligence by having the game marketed one way, and presented in another.

I would be surprised if Brooke Burke or any of the programmers at EA Games can actually say they are pleased or proud of the result, as it pertains to Brooke Burke "starring" in this game.

With that, I'll get back to playing the game.

LIKE TO GET IT!
