Best War game ever

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 10

Unlike the person above me i have actually played the game Hidden and Dangerous on the PC. It isnt easy to find in the US but is a huge hit and some European countries. It is by far the best war game i have every played and one of the best overall games i have played. In the game you are to control 4 soldiers through various missions of rescue, sabotage, and many other hard to accomplish jobs behind enemy lines in the infamous World War II. This is the real deal its not a Goldeneye type game that you run around blowing people away and are a health god. In this the enemys have about the same health as each of your four guys. It may seem hard to play if it is like this but the secrets are stealth and snipers. To me is seems the most important man in your team is the sniper because of his ability to take out the enemy from long distances where you are out of sight to teh naked eye. By stealth I mean being able to see them before they see you. Shooting them in the back, throwing grenades into enemy filled rooms, and making distractions are all ways to accomplish your tasks. All these things make the game a must buy. This is sure to be a hit.

An enjoyable squad-based shooter

I picked up Take2's newest squad-based shooter for the DC the day it came out, and I've been spending the majority of my free time playing it ever since.

It's a different time in Hidden and Dangerous and, although I miss the luxuries of modern-day warfare; in ear radio's, nightvision, etc, I think you'll find the WW2 setting to be quite enjoyable.

Your weapons aren't exactly high-tech, but they can do some serious damage just the same. You've got your basic machine guns, sniper rifle, and of course, the tripod mounted heavy machine gun. There's no plasteecs here, it's all about dynamite when you need to blow something sky-high, and this definitely gets the job done.

The graphics aren't exceptional by DC standards, but I think you'll agree that they do surpass those of Rainbow Six. The movement of the characters is pretty fluid and the background environments are decent enough. I had heard that there were quite a few bugs on the PC version and, thankfully, these seem to have been addressed in the DC port, as I've not experienced any glitches in the numerous hours I've played.

For those of you that have played R6, you'll appreciate the fact that your fellow Brits will not get hung up on objects; walls, ladders, etc. I've *never* had to double back and find a team member perpetually running into a wall or stuck on a ladder in all the time I've put into this game.

One unique feature is that you can pile your comrades into any vehicles you find along the way and try to drive your way through levels. (In my experience you usually get blasted, but it's still a nice touch)

The user interface is pretty well done. You have your basic first person view, as well as two 3rd person views, one slightly higher and set back than the other. I also found the weapons selection menu and the command selection menu to be easier to navigate than the R6 setup.

Bottomline- If you like squad based action, I definitely think that you'll enjoy spending some time liberating Europe from the Third Reich in Hidden and Dangerous.

It's a lot like....... Rainbow Six

This game is not a first person shooter. This game is not like Metal Gear or Quake. This is a squad based strategy game. You can't run into a room or an open field and just start blasting away at hundreds of people. I suppose like real war, you quite often have to use your entire four man squad to subdue a one man patrol by shooting him in the back. (It's okay, they're all Nazis.) The AI is smart. The enemies are as strong as you are. In other words if you get shot once or twice, you die. So now your asking why would anyone want to play this game? You get to control a four person sqaud (from a FPS or 3rd Person perspective) through several challenging missions in Europe during a WWII. This includes rescuing troops and blowing up bridges. You have to use timing, stealth, teamwork, and cunning to play this game. Why is it a lot like Rainbow Six and Spec Ops? Well, you can download a copy of Rainbow Six or Spec Ops from Take 2 Interactive corporate web site (in other words, althougth I don't think they produced Rainbow Six, I think they use the same game engine). The game also pays attention to detail. The music (when it sporadically plays) along with the atmospheric audio and visual effects (like rain and fog) make this game a keeper. I have heard rumors that Spec Ops (which uses a similar, if not the same engine as this game) doesn't run well on the Playstation. Well, if you own a Dreamcast or a PC with a 3D accelerator, it runs just fine.

NOTE: You can download a demo of this game, but the options like weapon selection are severely limited.

Ok i have to start of by saying no offense at all, but if youre not that good at videogames or if this gam ebeing hard worries you, you probably shouldnt get it.IT IS VERY HARD.But it is also one of the best war games to date, and if you like war games(which there is a surprising lack of for any console)or stratedgy games, pick this one up, its great. Now, ill start by saying the hardest point of this game might be the controls........they are very hard to learn. But once you do, its a snap and pretty cool. The graphics arent as good as dreamcast could do, but the characters lok great and the environments look well above average, they put you on some cool missions. But on the downside there is a decent amount of slow down present. It doesnt happen that often though, and doesnt kill the game, but it is none the less a flaw. You also have the cool ability to select what guns and how many rounds your troops get, this is very cool.sound-this games sound is up to par with medal of honor.youll hear nazis screaming, yourself barking out orderes to your troups, bullets whizz past your head as you run to try to capture a nazi controlled bunker....absolutely awesome. This game is.solid.

Interesting but hard.

I had this game for about 3 days before I returned it. It had it's moments. The concept is great and controls are decent, although I don't think anything will ever top a mouse for a first person and third person game. Without some sort of auto help to aim this game is pretty hard. You just can't aim and react fast enough with a standard DC controller. The AI of your mates who follow you around is horrible too. Always getting killed or stuck somewhere. Rent this before you buy it. Rainbow Six is a much better game.

this game kicks

This game is the absolute best action/shooter out there for dreamcast! i bought it the second day it was out. The controls are a bit confusing but this is definately worth it. This game is a cross of Rainbow 6 and Spec ops. If you like either of those games, you'll like this.

I must be an idiot, but this games controls are very frustrating. I feel that a keyboard is necessary to enjoy this game. I found myself spending half of my time looking in the manual to figure out what 2 button combo I needed to use next, and the other half of the time wishing I was playing Syphon Filter. I liked the atmosphere (I am a World War II buff). I like the idea of the game. The execution is too difficult. I am supposed to be playing, not figuring out the controls. There are some real nice features to this game, but you might need a keyboard to discover them. I hope someone enjoys the used copy I have made available....

I have not played the PC version of this game, but from what I understand, the DC version is better. H&D is great fun and it has just the right atmosphere. Its AI is highly superior to Rainbow Six. In Rainbow, I often found myself frustrated at getting my other men to just freakin get out of the way, or to go up the ladder they were supposed to. Not so here. Also, you can give orders and make plans on the fly rather than just at the beginning of the scenario. The only downfall is the enemy soldiers are not too bright. They fail to take cover and in fact almost always do kamikaze style death wish marches right at you. Still fun, and I look forward to a K&D Devil's Bridge release.
