For those who appreciate challenging, vibrant gameplay

Reviewers who say this lasted 10 minutes and finished it are simply "fibbing". On the Normal difficulty setting, even shooter veterans usually have a hard time finishing this game in a few hours of trying. That's finishing ONCE! Then you take into account that there are over 20 entirely unique endings to the game (2 for each character plus unique endings when you play as two alternating characters). These aren't just "Congratulations" screens, but hilarious, very Japanese-quirky character endings.

And THEN you have the old-school emphasis on scoring, as in a judgement of capability at playing challenging videogames. This isn't an RPG or Resident Evil where any moron can run around until a pat solution is stumbled upon. If you can't meet the thumb-blistering demands here, you lose. Sure, you can knock down the difficulty setting and win more easily but there is an honor system built-in. Playing less than Level 4 (out of 7) difficulty and you're not able to go through to round 2 no matter how good you become. And on Level 4 or higher, just try to earn even ONE free ship at 600,000 points. Just try...!

But most importantly, this shooter is fun. It takes the omnipresent Raiden/1942/military-style 2D shooter design but injects it with Capcom-type characters from the whackier side of things. It is also perfect for hard-working older gamers, allowing a pick-up-and-play blastathon between bursts of necessary activity. Though if playing on Level 5 Normal or more there usually isn't time to see the ending (you'll likely need many, many attempts to get through the games 5th-End Levels, as continuing starts you back at the beginning of these difficult stages, not where one "dies").

Decent Psikyo game with Camcom characters

This game is obviously from famous shooter developer, PSIKYO, with Capcom characters. I always liked Psikyo games, especially 1945 series, with its challenging game play with Psikyo trade mark game formula along with vibrant graphic.

The most absurd thing about any shooter game, if I have to point out, is infinite continues. What's the point of playing a well made game in one seating? However, this game does offer controlled infinite continues. From level 5, you will have to start from the start of the level you died from, not from the spot you died at. However, it can be manipulated if you are playing with a friend, and as long as one is on the screen, the other player can continue (now,,that's a cheating). Graphic seems decent throughout the game, but it seems somewhat outdated with cartoonish characters.

The only complain I have is that certain enemy attacks are not there to test your reflex but rather too overwhelming. Yes, it's possible to finish the game with one continue, but it's REALLY hard to pull that off (and knowing what 'spot' at when becomes crucial). I would prefer limited continue system over controlled continue system like this game. However, owning this arcade perfect shooter and another Psikyo game with this admission is well worth your money. Where shooters are being way under-rated, this game does hold its own place with good qualities. Give it a try =)

Boring

I love old style 2D shooters but this one is just dull. The graphics are nice (2D) and for about 5 minutes I -almost- had fun, but then I didn't want to play it anymore. I can't quite put my finger on why this game fails but suffice it to say that it's nothing memorable. Reccommended only for people who are absolutely starving for 2D shoot-em-up action.

AWSOME GAME

New system, same old game

I played the first Gunbird six years ago (1995) when it was released (import) on the Sony Playstation. Back then, I thought it was a great hectic-paced, old-school shooter with bright graphics and solid gameplay. If you weren't awed by the game itself, your socks were knocked off by the opening animation, which at the time was top-notch.

Fast forward to 2001 and Gunbird 2. Much like Cannon Spike, Psikyo has teamed up with Capcom again to produce another fun but shallow game aimed at the old-school shooter crowd. However in the wake of games such as Treasure's magnum opus, Radiant Silvergun (Sega Saturn), Gunbird 2 feels less like nostalgia and more like complacent game design.

Look I love my old school sprite shooters but this game gets old really really quick. I promise you will thank me about this. It IS however a good rental game. I bought it, I couldnt help myself, before playing this. I hade all of 10 minutes of fun then the games was over! It is soooo short that the only life we get outta of the game now is multiplayer and even that is old. Look if I were you I would wait for a game called GigaWing 2 which is scheduled for release this year. It is 10x better than the original and features high resolution sprites instead of the ... CS2 we get here or on GigaWing 1.

Thoroughly lackluster

The problem with the 2-D shooter genre is that it's very easy for developers to turn out weak, uninspired drek that will still sell well to a niche market; shooters aren't nearly as popular as they used to be and fans will snatch up the new ones with little hesitation. Sadly, I was one of them.

Gunbird 2 plays looks and plays almost exactly like Strikers 1945 on the Sony PlayStation, and believe you me, that is NOT a good thing. The graphics look horribly dated...I know a great game does not require eye-melting visuals, but come ON. Systems less powerful than the Dreamcast consistenly produced games that looked far more impressive than this. Capcom's insertion of characters from their more well-known games does nothing to increase Gunbird 2's appeal. There's precious little depth to the gameplay, as well. The stages are very short and you get from one end to the other simply by using your special attacks at every opportunity and continuing as many times as you need to. There comes a point where continuing will send you back to the beginning of the stage, but instead of making you more determined to beat the game, it just annoys you.

It seems that most shooters are really good or really bad. There's Einhander, there's G Darius, and then there's...this. Life is too short to waste playing bad shooters!

Worth a try if you like old style 2D shooting games

Gun Bird 2 is a traditional 1-2 player overhead shooter similar to other Dreamcast shooters like Giga Wing and Mars Matrix. I consider Gun Bird 2 to be better than Giga Wing however, due to it's original anime-type characters and story. There are several characters to choose from (including Morrigan from Darkstalkers), and each has his/her own trademark attacks and endings. Another feature that sets Gun Bird 2 apart form Giga Wing is the difficulty. You don't have to rely on constantly bombing or reflecting to dodge an impossible-to-dodge spray of bullets...you can just set it to a lower difficulty and coast through the game if you want. Unfortunately, Gun Bird 2 is still short and lacks replay value no matter what difficulty you set it on. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to beat, and the endings for each character aren't particularly long or rewarding either. I believe most of the older shooters like Raiden, Robo Aleste, and Twin Eagle were much better. When you consider your choices for a old style shooter on the the Dreamcast though, Gun Bird 2 isn't entirely a bad apple. It has more style and flare than Giga Wing at least.
