Its fun but could use some work...

I'm pretty sure I'm near the end of Dark Sector. Overall it's a real fun game, but it could use some work. I agree with another review I read where they said the glaive is too weak at times. Sometimes you'll toss the glaive right into a biohazardous creatures face and it will still be alive. Another thing they could work on is the close combat. There isn't enough variation in the melee "finisher" kills. Also, when your fighting an enemy at close range, hand to hand, the sense of impact and variety of moves seems limited. One other thing is the cover system, there are a lot of items that you just can't take cover behind or vault over, and it can be kind of annoying. All of that aside it's a fun game with some new elements of gameplay. The elemental charge for your glaive is very cool and unique. The aftertouch, although very similar to heavenly sword is very cool too, the elemental explosion is very cool too. The game also has a lot of boss battles that are very fun. Overall Dark Sector is a good game, it just could use some tweaking. If they took a little more time and refined it a little more a sequel could be amazing.

As Good As Expected

Ever since I saw the trailer for this game I knew I just had to have it. I'm not a fan of first person shooters so I was pleased when I saw this was a third person.

The overall idea of the game is a good one. No intro scene showing you how Hayden mutated into the hero he is, instead you play out the transformation. Level one being your training ground and introduction to the system, the black and white look was a great idea from the designers. Level two sees the start of the transformation and the game switches to color.

When you get to use the Glaive for the first time, it feels a little weak but soon you will earn new skills in using the weapon. Later on, you will get the ability to control the Glaive in flight and this is when it becomes valuable. The best way I found to get to grips with its controls was to clear an area of enemies and then spend some time throwing it around. Controlling the Glaive using the motion sensor was cumbersome so I switched that off and used the right stick. I found I was more accurate using this method.

Graphically, the game is awesome and a welcome addition to my game collection. My only complaint (and the reason for only four stars) is the annoying camera angle. When a number of enemies attack you from multiple directions, it can be hard to move the camera around to get a good shot. I had to redo some sections due to a soldier shooting me from behind and struggling to get the camera to swing around so I could take a shot. Camera angles can be an issue for some third person games but this one was particularly frustrating.

That aside, Dark Sector is a wonderful game to look at and fun to play. Trust me, when you start throwing the Glaive around and controlling its flight, you can't help but smile at the slow motion carnage.

Much better than reviewers say!

This game is way better than the 7ish scores it's been getting by pro reviewers. It plays like a mashup of Resident Evil 4/COD4/Resistance: Fall of Man(horror elements, shooter, Eastern European locale), Gears of War/Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (use of cover), and Heavenly Sword (use of sixaxis aftertouch). If you love those games, like I do, then you'll love this. The game looks amazing- people who came over to my apt. were greatly impressed with its look. I couldn't put it down once I started playing. I'm 6 levels in and can't wait to finish it and try online play. Absolutely no regrets about the purchase.

I just got it in the mail. At first I thought about returning it without giving myself the chance to like it. And then, I learned how to hide and sort of play the thing. It is a GREAT game. Better than I expected. And, I am keeping it. You won't be dissappointed. 5 Stars!

I have played just 2 levels of this game, and so far, it is pretty fun. I love 3rd person shooters, and this game adds a new twist to it, the "glaive". it is awesome to use it. The only negative point of this game is the cover system... sometimes, you can shoot through the walls. I will see how the game continues, but so far, I would recommend it.

Soooo much potential....

This game was obviously rushed to get released, like most games for ps3.
Near the beginning of the game when the dude comes in and finds the guy sitting in a chair with his arms tied to the back of it....where is the chair? I see the man sitting there, I see the chair off to the side turned over, but he's not sitting on anything, just air. I thought he had like some kind of powers or something, but then he got shot and the story continued and I was confused.
I work in the game and vfx industry for a living, so I know my way around this crap.
That aside, the game is quite fun to play, even though my review is mainly about how the game play bothers me. For instance - the hand to hand combat is horrible. His turnaround is super slow. I can head shot a dude with my pistol from a mile away (which is kind of cool.....but unrealistic!). Why is it that his super blade can return to him with the greatest of ease, but not fly around and hit a dude unless he's in it's direct path? There are only 4 weapons to choose from, but I guess that's okay. I really hate the guys with shields, dammit. Why can't I just hide behind the freakin' wall? Why can't I just get away from the wall and roll from shielded dude without hiding behind the wall on accident? What's with the freaky screen glow when your life is low? Why's his hair so gay?
Besides that I really liked this game, maybe because I still believe in the potential it could have had....and when your super blade is charged up a few levels, it can really cut guys in half! awesome.
I would say this game is on par with TimeShift, get past it's annoying features and you'll really enjoy it's good ones. 4 stars for effort.
Thanks for your time.

Enjoyable but needs minor fixing!!!

I have to say, putting this game into my console then playing it on a sony 50 inch hdtv 1080p is pretty nice. I love the dark eerie, feeling it portrays. The combat system is a bit lame, not to many options with the moves. But overall this game is alot of fun, it has a nice gears of war run and gun type of style. It's worth the purchase!

Not a great game

This is game is OK. It's not as fun as the other reviewers say it is. The glaive is pretty weak as a weapon. The level designs are nice and the graphics are OK. I would not really recommend this game. If you are looking for a much better game, I would highly recommend Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I am a little disappointed with Dark Sector.

Good but not great

I am almost finished with this game and found it to be average to really good, its like it fights to be a better game the whole time. I am going to review this game a little differently, I just wish I could not have a rating so people would not just blow by see the stars and then make their opinion.
*graphics- seem to vary some scenes and areas will be simply stunning then others not so much the in-game graphics are top notch especially the blood- love the intro back and white!
*gameplay- the gears of war style cover, run and vault are very very clunky(at least compared to gears wich truy defined that style of play) example- hayden will dive for cover but not actually take cover you have to press the button again but even thats not guaranteed, countless times ive been killed trying to get cover only to jump the opposite way. Triggered scenes are terrible! At some point you will get to a bridge and there will be endless amounts of enemies flowing at you(this went on for a solid 5 minutes!) until you go to a point and they "magically" stop coming. The melee system is terrible, too many times I will have to run in fear of getting one-hit-killed by the shield totin guys because hyden just cant seem to connect with a solid hit. The glaive is really cool, you can take down 15 dudes if you know how to use it, but I hate how your forced into using it by lack of ammo and goveners on the guns. The finishers are cool but there only a few and they get old real quick, plus you dont get rewarded for doing them which you should considering it is a pain to pull them off in the heat of battle. This game kinda copies off god of war in a way which could have been awesome if implemented correctly example- there is a big boss fight the whole time you do these mini gow sequences and at the end there he dies- no insane finisher, no great cutscene nothing he falls to the ground thats it I felt really disappointed for it to lead up to that. The atmosphere is great, I was playing with the lights off and at one point I wanted to turn them on. The sounds, look and overall gritty feel kept me jumpy the whole time. The gunplay is honestly one of my favorite things about this game it is on point, oh by the way the shotty is buck! The black market could take some cues from resident evil 4 and money is scarce making for some tough decisions but the killer for me is that you HAVE to have a handgun so my hopes of the ak-47 & shotgun combo was thrown right out the window. The puzzles were really simple and only seemed to drag the game down(not to mention they could be solved by a 2 year old), I feel if they had no enemies for a while kept the pacing slow and had something creepy happen in lieu of puzzles would have really bumped this game up a lot. Really this game is not about puzzles its about gunplay, scaring the crap out of you and lots & lots of gore. Now my buddy has already completed this game and was very disappointed by the fact you could not go through it with all the upgrades and such on a higher/ same difficulty- the powers are understandable but the upgraded guns thats a no no.
*story- not much to say but the story comes on strong then slowly fades away only explaining your mutation and the disease of your enemies. It has the foundation for a great story but barely has enough to carry its own weight.
*Online play- decent nothing special pretty much one person is hayden the rest are hazmat and who ever kills hayden becomes him but ive noticed if one person who is really good will eventually become him and dominate the whole time or two teams each with a hayden trying to take out each others hayden ect ect... No deathmatch with regular hazmat guys or any of the like wich would have been great- maby if you get 10 kills in a row you become hayden for 60 seconds that would make for some awesome online play.
Overall this game is a mix of %60 gears of war %20 resident evil 4 %5 god of war and %15 dark sector flavor. One thing though this game has many flaws but something kept me playing, maby because I spent $65? that too but something made me not want to set the controller down thats why I gave it 4 stars because normally I would just condemn a game like this but there was something special about this game. I am preying for a sequel with a story to fill in the gaps, tweaked melee & cover system and more gory finishers god of war style. Definitely a rent, rent it!

Dark Sector is an amalgamation of many great games, but it still culminates in a unique experience. There's a little bit of Gears of War, Resident Evil 4, Uncharted, Bioshock, and several others all wrapped up in an eery and exciting game.

You play as Hayden Tenno, a black ops agent sent into the fictional country of Lasria to bring down a mad scientist before he can unleash the "Technocyte" virus onto the world. Fortunately for you, you get infected with the virus early on and then benefit from the many abilities it grants you.

The infection transforms your right arm into this metallic death dealer that spawns the glaive, a "Krull-esque" 3-pronged blade capable of dismemberment, burning enemies alive, electrocuting them, and freezing them. As the game progresses, Hayden's abilities increase, which involves the ability to form a force field/shield and to detonate the glaive when it approaches a group of enemies.

The gameplay works pretty well as a 3rd person, over the shoulder view. There are times when it takes about 3 or 4 throws of the glaive to kill an enemy (I guess the virus makes monsters glaive-resistant). Also, some enemies require you to unload a full clip into them to bring them down (humans shouldn't be able to absorb that many bullets). It can be a little frustrating, but that's not half as frustrating as some of the melee moves. They are even less effective. And some of the finishing moves are a bit repetitive. That being said, Dark Sector still has some of the best graphics in a console game. The lighting and textures are about as good as Gears of War and Uncharted. The sound design is top notch. You are flooded with all these eery sound effects that totally creeps you out.

The game is pretty linear, but you never quite know when the monsters will jump out at you, so it keeps you on your toes. There are 10 chapters in the game, which makes for a medium length story (I'm currently on chapter 7). Despite a few minor setbacks, I'm thoroughly enjoying this game. I think if you enjoy survival horror or shooters, you will find Dark Sector eerily pleasing.
