I've played all the burnout games over the last few years, and while this one looks the best, it is by far the worst to play. The reason is that the whole game is made to make you feel like a lost tourist.
The average race goes like this:
-Pause the action 5 times or more to look at the map.
-Crash 3 times because you are looking at the HUD instead of the road
-Make a wrong turn anyway and lose the race
To add insult to injury most of the race cars require you to keep your nitro button pressed pretty much all the time or you go a lot slower. Of course you have to take it off when you look at the map, so when you come back you've lost your boost chain unless you are really quick to get your finger on the button again.
And it seems like all the events leave you up in the hills where there are only about 5 events within a 3 minute drive, so you find yourself constantly trying to get back to the city just like a lost tourist. I don't know about you but I never enjoyed being a lost tourist. Unfortunately the main characteristic of this game is that it is the perfect lost tourist simulator.
The stunt events are similarly annoying, require that you pretty much know exactly the course you will take in order to get the right points. But if you know it, you probably smashed all the billboards and stuff that give you points.
It's very annoying. And sad, because the graphics and crashes are great (however the crashes are way too drawn out, especially since you will be so unfocused that you will crash a lot and just want to get it over with)
The takedown events are actually the only part that feels somewhat like the fun bits of the old burnout games. They don't require you to go in any specific route, so they are a lot less annoying. Unfortunately they took out the crash events of the old games and put in a much lamer showtime event which takes away all the skill and precision of the crash events with a stupid car that bounces around on other cars.
Overall this game is a huge wasted opportunity. They tried to shoehorn an open ended environment into burnout without thinking at all about the gameplay mechanics. It didn't work.
Games like GTA have solved all of the problems that this game has by putting a ribbon on the road to follow or arrows at the top saying where to turn. I'm not sure why they decided not to do that, but it was stupid. It turns this game from a fun racing game into a tedious map reading excercise.
Taking out the crash events and replacing them with showtime was also a terrible move.
Overall, if they had put 10% of the energy they put into the graphics into gameplay it would have been a fun game.
You may think I'm just complaining because I'm bad at this game. Well I've always been good at burnout and this is no exception. It's actually pretty easy compared to past burnouts. I pass 90% of the events on the first try, but am always annoyed in the process. On the takedown events I routinely double or triple the required number. The point here is that it's not challenging, it's just irritating.
As it stands it is by far the worst entry in the burnout series. They have stopped thinking about how to make a fun game and focussed solely on the flash.

This game is honestly a lot of fun. Not only do you have the racing aspect but there are many other things you can do to complete the game. Stunts, races, aggression, etc. This game honestly has kept me busy for quite some time. When you're done playing you're own game you can branch out and go to do online challenges. These are actually very fun. What i especially like is that they are constantly updating the game. Not many developers actually go to this trouble. It seems as if they honestly want you to enjoy the content that is available and will go to great lengths to add new content so that you don't get bored. Don't take my word for it. Try it out. :)
Great Game

This is a must buy for anyone that loves racing games. One of the best things about this game is that the maker releases FREE updates to the game on regular basis. Can't go wrong.

I never played a Burnout game before this one as it never appealed to me. Then I played the demo of this game off of the PSN, and I fell in love immediately. This has an entirely new take on the racing genre, and while there are some haters of the changes, I think it makes playing the game very fun. I find myself driving around mindlessly throughout paradise city hitting jumps and doing tricks etc, and it never gets old for me.
If you're one of those people who loved driving around in the GTA games, this game is like that but times 100 and with tons of great races and events mixed in. If you're on old school Burnout fan, you should probably download the demo before buying this.
Good game, good timing

Simply put, this game feels like an arcade version of gta.
I bought it and I'm glad I did because its fun. However, if the new GTA had released on schedule before this game, I doubt I would have bothered with more than the free demo.
This game is extreemly fast paced, if your car sits still for 5 seconds your car shuts off and the game goes into a screen saver mode with classical music playing... I have never enjoyed forced racing games because they don't let you really enjoy racing environments or the driving experience. This game lets you go at your own pace, you can actually play the game without being part of a timed event that will end with "You Lose" screen after a few minutes if you don't participate in a the race that let you into the actual game.
On top of these aspects, there are puzzles of sorts in this game. One goal is to smash all of the burnout labeled billboards in the city. The tricky part of this is figuring out exactly where jumping ramps, or the entrances to them, are located and how they have to be approached to hit these billboards. Some are extremely easy to hit, but some require alot of thought and preparation.
The online play can also be alot of fun. At any time the server player can change challenges for open play as well as force a race start that will pull all the players on the server to the starting point. At these starting points the camera does a close-up of each car and gives an online stat of each player: # of online rivals, # of online races won etc.
Overall, the game is fun. However, I expect to enjoy the driving in the new GTA even more and I doubt I would have gotten this game if the release date on GTA was less than a couple of months away:)
UPDATE:
I have just recently gotten the burnout level license, the point where they show the game credits, and I must say this is the best game I have played on a console in YEARS. I know that first person shooters are a dime a dozen on the next gen consoles, but I prefer pc controls for those games. This game is a must have for any racing or console fan. I have come to the point where I enjoy just turning on the game for something fun to do while I listen to cds or the radio, muting the so-so music in the game while I search for the last few burnout bilboards or fences I need for more car choices or simply go online to hook up with cool peeps that want to do some of the 350 online challenges to get some more cars.
This is the best game I have played to date on the ps3, all other racing games including the free rally game included with the 80gig ps3 model don't come close to the enjoyment of this game. Simply put, I don't expect to find a more enjoyable and longer lasting game than this on the ps3 in the forseeable future spare gta...
Ups'n'downs but game shines overall!

The slow motion is kinda stupid when you crash, but other than that it's lots of fun.

This game is just another fantastic chapter in the Burnout franchise. The graphics are beyond amazing, the soundtrack - pretty good, the online capabilities make this game never-ending, and the difficulty moves progressively with the game play very well. The only downside I see at all is the lack of a replay button. You get into a race or a burning run, make it three block from th finish line, crash - or lose - then instead of being able to press retry and just try it over again, you have to drive all the way back to the starting streets - sometimes all the way from one side of the city to another. However this does add one nice touch to the game, there is no break in the driving. The car is practically always moving. Anyway, all around - good job EA.
Love Paradise!

First of all, this is most likely one of my favorite driving games now just because of the free ride. I am about half way through the game itself and it just keeps getting better. Not to hard, not to easy. Great graphics, great soundtrack. The handling of each card equates back to the type of car you are driving.
More fun with Online play.

Great graphics. Solid game play. Unlocking the 70+ cars in the game is the sole purpose for single player action, but online play is great. You will need a wireless headset to enjoy the full experience. I am sure once GT5 comes out this one will drop in price to around $24 on amazon market place.
