I bought the Sony Playstation 2 game console, along with $300.00 of accessories, last year for Christmas. The game console comes with nothing. No remote, no games (unless you buy the so called value packs), nothing. You even have to buy the stand for it separately! But that isn't the problem.
The problem is, I bought the remote control unit from the Sony store (...). The remote control unit is REQUIRED if you want to use the console as a DVD player. It just will not work any other way. Several weeks after Christmas, the whole thing just quits working. I called Sony and they told me that the remote control unit (that I bought from the Sony store) caused the console to break and they would not cover the cost of fixing it. They said my warranty was VOID! The reason? Because I used an unsupported device to control the DVD player. First of all, I bought the remote control unit from Sony. Second of all, the package had a BIG PS2 logo on it. Third, the Sony sales person told me that I had to buy that unit in order to use the DVD player. And last, there was no other remote unit offered in any store, anywhere! To make matters worse... When I called Sony, the first thing question they asked was if I used a remote control device with the system. They knew that this was a problem and they sold me the unit anyway.
So, if you want to invest (...) in a game system this Christmas, don't buy Sony or you might wide up with a broken pile of (...). The games were not even that great anyway. (...)Just don't buy Sony. Never buy Sony!

this is the worst I have spent money on PS2 is not worth [money] the dvd player skips every 15 minuts because it is only 4x which is put in the PS2 just so you would think it was beter than the supior Dreamcast but in reality GT3 is the worst
racing game I have ever played and the memory cards are [money] and for [money] you can get a ... which you can play games on because it is equal to a ... so the best thing to do with a PS2 ... is to smash it and get on tape to show Sony that this was their worst ever Gran turismo 2 is more fun to play than the 3rd the only game on PS2 would be Gran theft auto 3 and it would have better graphics on dreamcast and would be twice as more fun so do us all a favor and buy a ... one reason Dreamcast is beter is that it has more polly gons per second than the ... 2 and Metropolis Street racer has double the graphics than PS2. The best things to do with a PS2 is either sell it for [money], burn it or even smash it destruction is needed for ... systems like this peice of ... if you rate to ... matter it might rate higher but just get a ... it just rocks.

This is a very poorly designed console. The dvd player skips constantly, the system has several bottle necks and several developers have said that it was too definately to program for and have left to program on the much more user and developer friendly microsoft x box and nintendo gamecube. Also there have been several problems with manufacturing that sony still hasn't fixed: out of the five people i know with a ps2, fours stopped working due to hardware defects and some have ruined game disks but sony's customer service charged three of them around a hundred dollars each to have the problems fixed. This console also requires several additional add ons such as an controller slot expander ($...) for four player games, a modem ($...) for online games, and a harddrive ($...) before it can even come close to the features and it still wont have have hdtv support, dolby digital surround sound and graphics capability that the new microsoft xbox offers right out of the box for same price. It has some great games already out but improved versions of them are coming out for the xbox and it can't match the future lineup or graphics of games that xbox and game cube offer.

When I first heard of PS2, I thought this would definitely be the system too buy. When I had bought it, I realized all the hype about it was false. I kept chucking the controller down when it took 5 minutes to load Madden 2002. The loading time was outrageously long. Then in late November, when Gamecube had come out, I bought it...SO then when, I had bought Gamecube along with Rouge Leader, which was good, I waited anxiouly for Super Smash Brothers Melee. AND WAS IT GOOD! Nintendo had come out with a game in they're first month with the Gamecube than had PS2 had ever had...Nintendo has way better games than even PS2... And for you people who think Gamecube has kiddie games... like how Nintendo is sticking to Zelda. Well I don't think most "kiddies" can beat Zelda. Gamecube has Metroid Prime, Rouge Spear, Eternal Darkness Sanity's Return, Six Resident Evil Games (did I say six! Yes I did) in the making and much more still to come out. Listen to me. Gamecube is the system to get and has more third party developers than any other console. Just wait to they get more games out and we'll see who will win the console war.

We ordered the system with the V3FX steering wheel, DVD remote control. We did not recieve the two items with our order. We also sent an email to the company concerning the two items 2 days ago, they have not returned a reply within 24 hours as they indicated on their web site. Nor have they sent one within 48 hours. So please beware of their lack of supply and response.
It was fun while it lasted.

I really think Sony screwed up with the Playstation2. I've owned two systems in less than a year, and both turned out to be defective!
From time to time I played my games, music, and dvd's on it, which were all bought new and kept in good condition, like the system itself. The only problem was from time to time, my system began rejecting discs. Messages would appear on the screen that stated the system was unable to read my discs. This message appeared more and more often, until it was the only thing that appeared on the screen.
For some reason, it seemed to start with the dvd's. Sometimes when I'd be watching one with a friend, the picture would go pixilated, turn black, and start skipping chapters, which was highly annoying, and led to one of my discs becoming permanently damaged!
I always take good care of my systems. I own an original pong system, an Atari 2600, a Super Nintendo, a 3DO, and a Dreamcast. These systems may be aged, but they are all in good working order, and when you pay nearly five hundred dollars for a PS2, you're naturally going to take good care of it. Unfortunatley, not long after I went to Wal-Mart to exchange my defective system for a new one, the same problems occured. After that, I'd finally had enough, and got a refund.
After that, I discussed my misfortune to some of my friends and co-workers, who owned PS2's. They said their systems suffered from the same defects. One person even went through FOUR systems! The PS2 only came out last October!
I also spoke to a woman who works at (a retail store) about my problem, and she said it wasn't an isolated incident, and that she's been having many people returning their systems due to similar defects. Perhaps Sony will get their act together with the Playstation3. As for the Playstation2, my advice would be to avoid it. A highly defective system isn't worth (the price). Besides, its graphics aren't even all that good. Maybe its just me, but its graphics are only ocassionally equal to the Dreamcast.
My experience with the PS2 may not have been great, but what made things worse was having to also put up with its many defective peripherals. I had a controller that was made by MadCatz. I honestly liked it more than Sony's model, and it worked great for about a month before the anolog stick died. I also owned the 'Performance Master DVD Remote' for the PS2 as well. Its button configuration was akward, and there were buttons that were in the wrong places. For instance, If you wanted to play the movie, you had to hit the 'stop' button. And when you wanted to stop the movie, you had to press the 'play' button. Then there was the gameshark2, and what a mistake it was buying that thing! It didn't work from the start! And after looking at the reviews of that product on this site, I see I wasn't the only one who had problems with it.
In closing, I say shame on Sony for releasing a system with so many bugs in it, and to those third party companies with their substandard peripherals. I've never owned such defective equipment! And I hated having to shell even more money for something I felt the system should've had, which of course is the multi-tap. And, for obvious reasons, Sony made sure the old Playstation multi-tap wasn't compatable with the ps2. The system should've had four controller to begin with. Sony could've probably made the money back if they trimmed a couple needles features off the Ps2, like that motorized tray.
All in all, the Ps2 didn't even come close to meeting my expectations, and it just goes to show what hype can do for a system. But with Microsoft's powerful new X-Box hitting stores, and Nintendo's game cube not far behind, it should be interesting to see how this system fares. Since I've gotten tired of taking part of this expensive system war, I've decided to downgrade to a Nintendo64, and play quality games like Zelda: Orica Of Time & Majora's Mask, Goldeneye, Super Mario 64, Resident Evil 2, etc. Because in a few years, despite what everyone says or thinks, the Ps2 and the X-Box will be replaced and looked down upon by everyone eager to get their hands on the next Playstation, Nintendo, or Microsoft system.
Not worth buying anymore

Aside from Gran Turismo 3 and Twisted Metal Black, all of Playstation 2's killer franchises are going over to XBOX. Plus, XBOX has a total of 40 1st and 2nd party studios making games for it. If you are looking for a console this christmas, look to the XBOX for superior graphics, better DVD playback, high definition gaming, builtin broadband adapter for internet gaming, 4 ports without the need for a multitap, hard drive for saving games instead of memory cards and for storing your own personal game soundtracks on, and realtime DD5.1 all for the same price as a PS2! In other words, the smart buy is XBOX.

Playstation2 is overpriced and overmarketed console with just a few good games. Have you seen shelves in electronic stores lately? They are full of PS2 consoles- nobody buys them! Also you never know if you will get one of those defective PS2 consoles. You better of buying dependable Dreamcast which is as powerful as PS2 and coming up with new good games all the time.
