Bomberman returns on Dreamcast with a few new twists

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 4

Anyone who has kept track of the Bomberman games since the beginning knows well that the gameplay has changed little over the years. Perhaps it's for the best however, because there's no need to mess with classic gameplay unless it needs fixing. Bomberman Online features all of the multiplayer fun of the previous Bomberman games plus a couple of new modes. For those unfamiliar with Bomberman, it's a puzzle/strategy game with simple but addicting gameplay. The basic goal is to lay bombs to trap and destroy your opponents on a semi-2D screen in a maze-like atmosphere. The most notable new features included in Bomberman Online are: updated 3D graphics, cell-shaded cinemas, online gameplay, character customization, and several new gameplay modes. While the single player mode may get boring after a while, the real meat of Bomberman Online lies within the multiplayer battles. I strongly recommend it to those looking for a good multiplayer game for the Dreamcast that anyone can get into.

This game is da BOMB! ;)

Bomberman Online is fun!. There are plenty of different game options to keep things interesting. Finding parts to customize your bomberdude will become an obsession quickly too. The control is spot on. If you get blown up, you have no one t blame but yourself. :P Even if you decide never to go online with it, it'll keep you going for months!

You dropped the bomb online, baby.

Bomberman Online manages to breathe new life into an old formula. I love the new rules and hope they show up elsewhere in the Bomberman series. The online games can be fun when there's no lag, but it feels like this is just too little too late in the life of the Dreamcast. Nonetheless, this is pretty good for one of the last DC games. What can I say? Bomberman Online is, in fact, the bomb. Er, da bomb.

This game is fun.

That's not true, I did enjoy the manga-styled Bomberman movie scenes, but the game... EUH! It's the ancient style, offers very little, and NO variety. I enjoyed the N64 Bomberman for it's multi-player, here they left that out and it left a big gap. Trying to play is ridiculous, the computer loses about 7 percent of the time, and it's no fun attempting to beat them. You never feel responsibility for the loss. The game can change soo quickly that it might as well be set to one minute, to save us time. There's way too much going on in one screen, like 50 different things and it's like you're supposed to try to watch it all, and you don't... and you lose. Also, there isn't even an Adventure mode here! It's all bombing in a small space. You always start out in a cramped area, far away from opponents. It's so old, and dull, it's begging for a drastic gameplay overhaul, like the N64 version (not saying that was great, but it WAS a direction with genuine innovation). All of the elements exist for a fun game, but it doesn't ever come together. I kept wondering when I would get to the fun part. ...

This game is a must have for your Sega Dreamcast.

This game is a must have for your Sega Dreamcast online.
Me and my brother was playing this game all day and night. It is a little bit hard to master. I was kicking butt online. I am the best online. This game is so cool.

This is the most complete Bomberman to date

The graphics, gameplay, and sound are all from the same tried and true Bomberman legacy. What makes this round complete is the extensive amount of things to unlock in the single player and, of course, online play! If you still have a broadband adapter, I can personally testify that it works great with Bomberman Online! When this game came out, I felt that my Dreamcast collection was complete.

A great game

I am a casual fan of Bomberman and this is the first Bomberman I own and I must say that the game is sweet fun...for a while. The gameplay does get repeative and although they added a variety of different game play objectives it still just boiled down to the same thing...bomb for me, bomb for you, bomb for everyone. The graphics are sweet and the Anime intro is MAD, just MAD, I could watch it over and over again. The gameplay as I said is standard and repeatitive although the Aqua fights rule!!!

If you are a Bomberman fanatic then by all means get it you won't be disappointed.

Graphically the best, quest mode lacks a little.

This is to date my third favorite Bomberman game. It stands on its own in my mind away from the others due to its graphical nature. Cell shading is wonderful! I've experienced almost all of the Bomberman series, and most of the new ones just turn me off. The physical look has never been better than what you see in this game!

I do not rate this game highly although for a few reasons;

~The quest mode is a little different that what Bomberfans might be used to. Its still setup as a sort of 'multi-world then kill boss,' but there isn't a -final- boss, which bugs me. Even worse? Theres a stage in the very center of the map...as if there was going to be a final boss fight right there.

~Offline there are no Louis or dinosaurs {I never played online, and am unsure if they were available there}

~Controlling your character is typically done with the digital pad. The d-pad on the standard Dreamcast controller is...lame. The most common replacement controller is the Madcatz controller, which has a slightly off kilter d-pad. This leads you to turning left alot when you mean to go strait, which mostly means you die alot by accident. Sadly my standard Bomberman Online controller is the AstroPad by Performance. This is rumored to aid in the every-so-common controller port failure / resistor blowout on the earlier model Dreamcasts.

But does this game have its perks!

Like Saturn Bomberman, it was playable online!

Like Bomberman 64, there are collectibles that allow you to customize your very own bomberman! {unlike Bomberman 64 although, these custom bombercreations can only be used online, which service is no longer supported}. But it still gives you something to do after you finish the quest mode.

As a huge Bomberfan, this is my 3rd favorite game, mostly because, to me, it is graphically the most beautiful {even more so when compared to say...Act Zero}.

Highly suggested if you own a Dreamcast!

If you don't, but know someone who does, then buy them this game!
