Not so great multiplayer

I've been playing Halo for years on PC and loved every minute of it. So when my PC died and i got the new macbook, i decided to purchase this timeless classic for well over $100. When i got onto multiplayer, there were only about 12 servers compared to well over 100 on PC. Not really the fault of the game which is why i still rated it high but lost a star due to few people actually playing it online.

READ THIS FIRST!!!!! IMPORTANT!!!!

It is a true statement when I say that Halo for Mac is indeed BETTER than Halo for the PC or Xbox, and this is why:

-Halo for Mac has BETTER GRAPHICS. The code has recently been rewritten for Mac, and offers things like Advanced Pixel Shaders, Detailed Objects, and even Model Reflections. FSAA is also offered for the Mac version of Halo... all things that PC owners are just now seeing in Halo 3 for Vista. Impress your friends. Laugh at their PCs.

-Halo for PC is old. Bug fixes were implemented in patches, but the game was never actually IMPROVED like the Mac version.

-Make sure that you install all updates up to 2.0.2 after purchasing the retail box.

-Tons of people still play multiplayer in this version. Halo 2 and 3 are Vista only. Who wants to have Vista?? HA!

Anyway, as long as you download all of the updates for the game, you will be very pleased. On top of all the graphics mumbo jumbo.. it's also overall a good game! ^_^

Great gameplay. Questionable plot turn.

My (9yr old) son and I both enjoy this game very much, and come back to play the more enjoyable levels from time to time.

The decision to include CREEPY(!), zombie-like aliens put my son off the game; "Papa, could you get past this level for me?". I know, it's a "mature" game; but he enjoys many other "mature" games, all the way through.

Anyhoo, beautiful graphics, great sense of immediacy (we both lean and duck in our chairs, trying to avoid getting hit), and high replay value.

Loads of fun but crashes a bit

I'm running Halo Combat Evolved with the 2.0.2 patch applied on a Mac Mini Core Solo 1.5 GHz with 1 GB of RAM and OS X 10.4.9. Halo runs quite well on this Mac, better than I expected. For the busiest scenes, I've had to turn off all of the graphics fanciness, but I don't really miss the effects since the game is quite involving.

Single-player mode is really fun, and there is a long enough plotline to keep you busy for many hours. The story itself is good, and reminds me quite a bit of Bungie's earlier Pathways Into Darkness and Marathon series (so much so that I hope Bungie finds a way to clearly tie the excellent Marathon elements into Halo later on). I particularly enjoy one of Bungie's ongoing themes, the proxy battle between the intelligent computers, one of which appears to be on your side and sane, and the other with an unclear but usually hostile agenda, both of which manipulate your character towards their own ends.

Multiplayer mode is fun, but is nothing new as it is similar in most ways to the many other multiplayer FPS's, and for an older gamer like me, is mostly a good way to get killed in quick and humiliating ways by 12-year-old trash talkers.

My only complaint, and it is a serious one, is that Halo likes to crash fairly often, usually right after a cutscene or a savepoint. This can be worked around by starting the current level over, but that can take quite a while if you're close to the end of the level when Halo bombs out.

I hope that Bungie and Microsoft bring Halo 2 and 3 to the Mac, and make the user-generated maps more compatible with the Windows and XBox versions of Halo.

Overall, an excellent game, and a worthwhile buy for Mac owners looking for some fun.

The best

This game has been out on the market for a while now (almost 5 years since it's copyright) for xbox and PC, and now mac. Even with the sequel already released and the third on the way, this game will be a favorite to go back to. It is not hard to see how this game has acquired the following it has--fast gameplay, intriguing storyline, and a flow from level to level that keeps you at your screen a little longer than you said you'd be just so you can see what comes next. A great video-game experience.

Can't get enough!

Yes, it costs twice as much as the Windows version, and it took a while to come to the Mac... but it's here now, and it's still worth the price!

Graphics looks much better than the Xbox version, and best of all, you can play online for FREE (unlike Xbox Live).

Btw, the best mouse for this is NOT the MS one, but the Logitech G7.

Bungie's Greatest

Wow Halo, I have had it for the Xbox for years, and fun's come with it ever since. Then I heard that they had made it for the computer. I had an old windows 98 that froze all the time so I wasn't very interested, I just heard that there was the new flamethrower as a weapon, and with my computer there was no chance I would get Halo or ever run it. Then one day I got a Mac Mini(thats quite a leap)! And then I remembered about that old classic, Halo! I quickly installed the game and started playing the campaign right away. The graphics were great and all the intense game play really blew the game away. Then I decided to play some multiplayer, and get the new flamethrower. I was impressed beyond my expectations because not only was there the flamethrower but the fuelrodcannon, six new maps, banshees, rocket launcher warthogs(like in Halo2), and the shade. All these were amazing to me because the xbox version didn't have any of these aspects in there multiplayer. The only bug that I found in the game is that when I save a multiplayer game it freezes up so even though it saves it I get confused on how to exit the game since everything freezes but one you exit it it comes back to normal. And if you have an apple mouse then it will be very tedious to throw the grenades because it requires the right clicker, so once you get Halo go out and buy yourself a Microsoft mouse. Even though this game has a few minor flaws it's still a beautifully made game. This one is truly one of Bungie's greatest works yet.

Could this change FPS for macs?

Hello, welcome to my review. I play a lot of Halo on my mac and this is what i can say:
1) Sound-5/5: This game has great sound. You can hear all the gun fire and voices from the computer players on campaign mode. On Multiplayer, it's so life like so it feel like you are actually in the game.

2)Graphics-4.5/5: This game sets the bar for Mac games. Yes the people don't look to realistic, but once you play with other people in their SPARTAN suits this games graphics just blew the roof. All the guns look like there supposed to be so you don't have to waste your time picking it up to find out what it actually is.

3)Controls-3.5/10: The controls are really confusing at first but once you get them down they're a piece of cake. I wouldn't recommend changing them when you get the game, because it'll just make it more difficult to play. The best kind of mouse to use for this game is a Microsoft mice, since it has the two click so you can shoot and throw grenades. The one click Apple mice are harder to use, because you have to press control then click for the grenades. **You can even buy a gamepad for it. I would highly recommend it.**

4)Multiplayer-5/5: In my opinion this is the best multiplayer game for the Mac. They have all the original game modes in Halo and Halo 2 for the Xbox such as: Capture the Flag, Slayer, and King of The Hill just to list a few. They also have your favorite multiplayer stages: Blood Gulch, Side Winder, ect.

5)Gameplay-4.5/5: This has great gameplay. You are a SPARTAN an undefeatable warrior. Like all futuristic games, you must save your planet from Covenant (aliens) invasion. You get powerful guns used by the humans and you are also able to pick up the Covenant's weapons. This is also based on objectives or missions, some include: protect the area from the Covenants, infiltrate the base protect fellow teammates. This also has a great tutorial level just to get you ready for the real stuff. A very well laid out game.

6)Overall-5/5: This is a must buy if you enjoy computer gaming on Macs, especially if your into First Person Shooter games.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review on Halo: Combat Evolved on the Mac.
