classic card games at last

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 10 / 10

Finally, classic card games have hit the Gameboy and this package makes a great impression. It is very similar to the PC version of Hoyle Card Games, including a variety of characters for both you and your computer opponents, colorful backgrounds, and a good interface. Playful music is also included to entertain younger audiences. Some games allow two player mode on a single Gameboy and some allow two player mode via the Gameboy link.

None of the games have configurable rule styles like the PC version, so they use Sierra's "standard" rule set. The online help is quite useful for beginners and rule lookups. The game also disallows bad moves, allowing for trial and error. Young players will quickly learn the rules with the computer's "guidance."

The Gameboy's small screen makes some of the numbers difficult to read (ie. points, # cards remaining), and the text and cards are pretty small, but gameplay is not hindered. The graphics are crisp and colorful throughout and the backgrounds complement each game. Your hand appears very natural although its behavior changes a bit between games. Suits are not always shown, depending on whether they're important or not in that particular game, and cards pop "on top" in Crazy 8's for higher visibility and recognition (you may end up drawing a lot of cards!)

When navigating, the cursor moves one card at a time in the direction you press and "A" is used as a mouse click. "B" can sometimes be used as an "undo." You can always start a new game, read help, or return to the main menu.

Scores & statistics are not saved, but solitare is either win or lose, and the other games are played in rounds until a player wins three times. Of course, you can win one round and call it quits. Spades games continue until someone wins 500 points.

Sierra did a great job with all of these card games, despite the Gameboy's limited screen space. This is an excellent package for all ages. Young audiences can learn some classic card games and apply some thinking skills. Although some games are fairly complicated, they are easily taught by a parent or peer with some experience and the online help will come in handy. Mature audiences will love these timeless classics that are highly replayable and a highly desired addition to the Gameboy lineup.

Dark Backgrounds with dark lettering .....not user friendly

This would be 5 stars if it were not so dark. The games are great but the dark backgrounds make the end results of some of the games impossible to see without directing a flashlight onto the screen....why would the creators ever put black lettering on a dark gray background???

Hoyle Card Games

I was so excited when I saw this game in the store finally a card game for the Color gameboy. I don't know how they can say someone the age of 6 can play. It took me at least a half hour just to figure out the set up and how to pick the player you wanted to use for yourself. Once that's completed you are given a list of games to play from hearts to solitare, you highlight the game you want to play and then proceed to start. This is where the diffcultlity comes in, you can not move the cursor arrows to fast or you miss a move and then have to press the B button to take you back a step. There is a help button that explains the basics of each game and how to play it. Once you win at a game your scores are not saved so everytime you start up again you start from zero. I like my scores saved for future reference. I tried playing some of the mutli-player games and got so frustrated that I quit. The solitare games are good once you get the hang of not moving the cursor to fast and the graphics are very colorful. I will keep this game just for the solitare. Would I recommend this game to everyone NO!, if you over the age of 11 you can play with reading and re-reading the instructions any one under the age of 11 might get frustrated and put the game away and forget about it. I perfer the old solitare game that I have for my orginial gameboy, it's easier to use and more fun to play.

Totally Disagree

When I bought a Gameboy, I was anxious to get this game, being a card player. I have the PC version and it is excellent, and educational.

But this game boy version is a total waste of money--I really agree that the cards are too small to see, which ruins the game. Its a darn shame, evern with a magnifier, because I do agree with the other reviews, but that is true of the PC version. Maybe having a 17-inch monitor helps, but at 52 years old, maybe my eyes fail me.

really good for killing time.

i bought this game because i live in new york city, and i am always taking the subway; thus, i have lots of time to kill. if you've ever waited for the subway in new york then you know what i am talking about. about the game, i am 29 years old, so some of the games are useless, if you are over the age of 15 you probably won't ever play go fish, or crazy 8's, or old maid. but some of the other games make it totally worth it. klondike [isn't very good] because you can only flip through the deck once, meaning you will NEVER win. but i can easily kill an hour with hearts, gin rummy, or some of the other solitaire games. i definitely recommend this game if you take public transportation, or if you spend alot of time at the airport.

Could have done so much more

The idea is fantastic. But the graphics are so horrible. I expected much more from Hoyle. They definitely could have done so much more. If you like card games, it is fun enough....just don't expect alot.
