I'm not an avid game player, and only pick up the controller once in a blue moon. With this said, I had a very hard time playing this game. I actually haven't made it past the 1st level! I've gotten so frustrated with it that I think I'm going to sell it to someone who will acutally have the time and patience to play it. If you are a very skilled game player then this game is probably for you. Otherwise, I would recommend you look elsewhere for an X-men game.

OK, so I bought a PS2 for my husband a long while back. He didn't like the games I picked out for him(I wasn't into games at the time) and so he picked out X-Men legends. I picked it up for grins one day cause he keep bugging me about it. I was instantly hooked.

Now, I don't know anything about Marval and their comic books, but I have to say that this game is truly one of my favorites. You get to choose for of your favorite characters to play with at one time. You can also push the directional buttons to switch between characters. For instance, if you're playing with Cyclops and you need to fly somewhere, just hit your directional button to the person who has flight and off you go. Fly back and you can instantly change back to Cyclops or one of the other two characters.

When you level up, you get points to distribute amoung your attributes and your skills. The game is rather stingy with the points so spend them wisely. Also, spend money wisely because there isn't a whole lot.

Most of the characters are awesome, a couple are worthless, like Jubilee and Psylocke, but they don't take away from how awesome this game is. The graphics in the game are rather bland and tend to run together. The voice work for the most part is good, can get cheesy at some points in the game. The storyline is simple and easy to follow, that's good for me.

Overall, there is nothing too complicated about this game so long as you allocate your skill/attribute points accourdingly and have the appropriate items equipped. This game is even great for the young ones to play.

If you like X-Men, well, this is it...

I used to read the X-Men a lot when i was a teenager and when i went to college, well, this is game has it, the same feeling when you read the comic book, it is as good as Wolverine's revenge and i can assure you it has a lot better plot than Ultimate Alliance. You can walk in the mansion and use the danger room to get experience points. The game is like Champions but with cell shading graphics. The game is based on the comic books and not the movies and is a great addition to anybody's superhero game library. The game can be played in 1, 2, 3 or 4 players, and if you're playing your game alone and somebody comes in and wants to join, you can simply do it pausing the game and adding the control to the second, third or fouth player immediately and if that friend or family member has to go or simpley doesn't want to play anymore, you can pause the game and simply turn off the control to the player.

The game is long enough to keep you busy and fun enough to keep you playing.

I give this game four stars 'cause the second game has better graphics and you can use both good characters and evil character 'cause the plot makes good and evil get together to confront a common enemy.

If you like super hero games, don't doubt it, this is it and you can find it very cheap for it is an old game; and if you like the X-Men, well, what are you waiting for?

Get X-Men 2 or Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Unless you're a harcore gamer, the first installment of X-Men Legends is really frustrating. First of all, there's no way of setting game difficulty! So even though the normal playing mode is easy for people who are really into games, it's not so great for the casual gamer.

Another thing I didn't like was the fact that if your team doesn't have characters who can fly, you're basically on your own. There are some levels when the character has to fly to get to the otherside. While doing so, you leave all the characters who can't fly behind and so you have to battle alone. Unless there's a way of working around this, which I can probably find on a walkthrough online, this was not good! I'm at the beginning of the game and can only choose certain characters who are limited in power and ability and only the female characters i.e. STORM, ROGUE, and JEAN GREY can fly. And they get beaten as soon as they reach the other side!

Another thing I don't like is the fact that you have to pay 200 techbits (money in the game) to revive characters. So, if you don't have enough techbits and you're character dies, you won't be able to revive him/her.

Once you enter a level you can't go back either, which really gets on my nerves since you won't be able to get more techbits once you smash everything there is to smash, which means you could run out of heroes if they all die.

The reason I bought this game is because I really liked the X-Men Legends 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, by the same company Ravensoft. It seemed they worked out all the short comings of X-Men 1 in X-Men 2, aside from the freezing problem in 2. And Marvel Ultimate Alliance fixes all the problems.

If you're a big X-Men fan and a serious gamer than this version of X-Men Legends won't be a problem for you. But if you're like me, a casual gamer who wants to enjoy the game and not be frustrated to no end by it, stick with X-Men Legends 2 or Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Also, a word of CAUTION for those who are planning on purchasing X-Men Legends 2, read the other reviews on that game because although it's fun to play, it crashes (freezes) when you reach ACT 4. And that's a problem with the game itself, not the disc, so even if you exchange the game for another one the same thing will happen.

My boys really enjoy this game. The co-operative play mode is a great feature of this game.

X-Citing and X-Cruciating

This game was about two weeks of on-again, off-again fun with some frustration like most video games. If you're a hard-core X-Men fan I have no clue if you'll like the game--I've only watched the movies--but I'm guessing you'll find enough to complain about because die-hard fans are never happy with any adaptation.

I thought the game was pretty fun though. A lot of fun brawling with various bad guys. The story was kind of ridiculous, but then what do you expect? Basically an evil general is out to spawn a war between mutants and humanity so he can justify genocide. The machinations of this are long and complicated and require you to of course go all over the world from New York to the Weapons X factory in Canada to a nuclear reactor in Russia. Thrown in are a couple throwback missions to Juggernaut rampaging through the mansion, Sentinels attacking New York, and Wolverine waking up in the Weapon X factory that let you play in the retro '60s/'70s-era costumes so Wolvie can wear his yellow spandex.

In between globe-hopping you focus on the story of Alison Crestmere, aka Magma, whom Mystique tries to kidnap until the X-Men rescue her. So you get to explore the world of the X-Men as she does by wandering around the Xavier mansion talking to characters and snooping around their bedrooms. You can also review sketches, comic book covers (none of those I thought were very impressive), and bios of the X-Men and evil Brotherhood, which was handy for a novice like me. You can also train in the Danger Room to work on your skills and add to your X-Men's abilities.

The game wasn't without flaws though.

Part of the problem is everyone has their own favorite X-Man (BTW, why do women call themselves X-MEN?) and with 14 characters to choose from you're not going to get much use from all of them. In fact, I relied heavily on maybe 5 characters: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Iceman, and of course Wolverine. I used Jubilee once, Beast & Gambit not at all, and Psylocke/Emma Frost in the Astral Plane missions. It's not that I don't like these characters, but I didn't find them terribly useful. Colossus, Magma, Storm, and Rogue I used occasionally, but there's hardly any need to.

What I found slightly disappointing is by the end the game became so easy when you figure out how to best use the mutant powers of the characters. Most of the time if you use Jean Grey's psychic shield, Wolverine's brutal slash, Cyclops' optic blast, and Nightcrawler's teleporting frenzy attack you'll wale on the opposition without hardly chipping a nail--or adamantium claw. I just about breezed through the climactic battle with Magneto using this crew. As a result there doesn't seem to be much point in having 14 characters when you really only need 4.

Other than that, I'd recommend finding a walkthrough on the Internet to help you avoid getting stuck. That comes in handy because the game doesn't always spell out what switches you need to hit or what mutant powers you need to use to achieve some objective. For instance, when you have to repair the Russian nuclear reactor, there's only a blue X that shows you need to use a mutant power, but which one? Turns out you need to use Jean's psychic ability to push something in place AND Cyclops' optic blast to weld the thing. That's the kind of stuff that isn't painfully obvious and can lead to some head-scratching (and cursing) trying to figure out what you need to do.

The most annoying feature was the lack of a continue. So make sure you save at every checkpoint. Otherwise if you screw something up or the power goes out or the machine just decides to lock up for no reason you might find yourself repeating a bunch of stuff.

The camera angles could be very annoying at times. Sometimes I'd go into a room and have to try and fight with this faraway overhead camera so that everyone looked like dots pretty much. A little more manual control of the camera would have been nice so I wouldn't get saddled with fighting from funky angles.

The CPU fighting of your allies is sometimes pretty abysmal. They seem to sometimes pretty much stand there or take weak swipes at enemies instead of disposing of them ASAP. That can be annoying when you're in a big fight and don't want to switch back and forth between four people.

The inventory system was irritating at times when you've got a full load and want to pick up some new toy. Like the characters, though, a lot of those rare and unique special items go to waste. The Hammer of Nimrod I found most useful because it helps Wolvie destroy Sentinels quicker. Erik the Red's Armor may also have helped Cyclops against Magneto. And the Astral Stone was useful for Jean in the Astral Plane. Still, most of those items didn't do a whole lot.

The graphics use that process so that everything looks kind of cartoonish, which I guess the idea being that since it's adapted from a comic book that made sense. The drawback is everyone looks like they're wearing oven mitts. The downside of using the newer costumes that more resemble the movies is that everyone seems dressed in black/yellow so it can make it hard to figure out where your character is in the middle of a fight. I recommend finding the "cheat" code to get some of the X-treme uniforms, although I wish you could play with the retro ones right from the start.

The flaws can all be overcome so the game is still fun to play, at least for this novice X-fan. It's a good value too and I'd wager more satisfying than any games based off the movies.

Fun multiplayer hack n' slash

I actually started playing this game after getting tired of playing Diablo 2 online. Sound unrelated? It really isn't. In fact, I was surprised by how much the two games have in common in their gameplay. This is a multiplayer hack n'slash much like Diablo 2. The fun of it is that you get to play as one of the X-men and can have up to 3 tag-along teammates, live or computer controlled, to help you complete your missions.

I enjoyed the way you could control the way in which your characters level, allowing you to focus on specific abilities.
For example, do you want to level up Iceman to master his powers of freezing opponents as an assist power, or would you rather beef up his ability to throw ice powered punches in hand-to-hand combat? Would you prefer to focus on Jean Grey's abilities to confuse groups of enemies or increase her use of telekinesis to slam them againt the walls? Should wolverine increase his ability to strike with monstrous slashes or should he focus on his healing ability and speed? Decisions like this add to the games replay value.

Game-play worked well. Special moves were easy to execute and basic melee combos were not too difficult to integrate into each battle. Switching between characters is a breeze and can really enhance the solo player's ability to coordinate attacks of all his characters. Also, the level construction varies a lot from sinking battleships crawling with sentinels, to underground sewers full of morlocks. A lot of the environment is destructible including walls which really enhances the gameplay. There's nothing like watching Jean Grey hurl a pool table at a cluster of baddies.

The graphics in-play are cell shaded which I liked just fine. I was less impressed with the cinematic cut-scenes. Some of the models were so poorly textured that they almost looked like stop motion figurines. Voice over work was well done. Notably, Patrick Stewart lends his voice to Xavier. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure some of the talent who voice the cartoon versions of the characters were also used here, particularly Wolverine's.

My only other complaint is that though battles with groups of baddies get hot, they are over fast. A lot of time is spent trashing rooms and destroying object to see if bonus items were inside them. I would have rather gotten bonus items by actually using my X-men to fight more bad guys, not to throw piles of crates against the wall.

If you like the X-men, or if you just like hack n' slash, this is definitly a worthy choice for you

The Truth about X-Men Legends...

Ok first of all I think this game hit all the important spots that a gamer/comic-book fan could have ever wanted. It was appealing to both people who knew about this crazy X-Men stuff and people who didn't. On with the review...

I found the sound and gameplay to be easy and simple nothing out of the ordinary and nothing to difficult to understand. The storyline was even better and I realized this was the games strongest point. Mixing adventure/action with an RPG style worked very well in this title. Also being able to use and see so many different mutants was a nice touch.

With X-Men Next Dimension I found it hard to catch combos and twirl my powers in any real effective way. X-Men Legends traded my anger for Next Dimension with joy for X-Men Legends... bottom line folks... buy it if you love the X-Men... rent it if you find them luke-warm in your heart. :)

X-Men Legends was going in the right direction...

X-Men Legends was going in the right direction. It has cool playable characters, fun superpowers, and a spectacular storyline, but the gameplay is just way too flat and repetitive. All you do is walk into a room, kill people, break stuff, and sometimes use your powers to solve a "puzzle" (making a bridge, welding metal). There are no interactive mini-games of any sort and levels/events take place in the same locations over and over. The gameplay is exactly the same from beginning to end.
The graphics are the worst part of the game. They look hand-drawn and stiff. If you break an object, it simply disappears and a small cheap "shattering" effect happens. The sound is okay on some parts of the game, but ridiculous on others, like with my fav character Storm, whos lightning strike sounds like a low-volumed spark. And I hate how her tornadoes suck. All they do is lift things up. They rarely destroy or kill. Plus it's hard to attack people with them because anything makes them dissipate.
The camera is the worst part of the game. You see everthing from a diagonal angle, almost as if you're watching everthing from a ceiling. Speaking of which, most levels do not have ceilings. So all you see is the floor and the walls. The camera angle is very frustrating to play with.
Also, to pass the whole game, it takes 20 hours. I they the developers should have cut down on the hours and used that extra memory on better graphics, sound effects, and interactive levels.
I hope Avtivision makes X-Men Legends 3, but with state-of-the-art graphics, sound, music, and interactivity, including mini-games instead of flashbacks.
