My new scores: FUN= 4 stars; OVERALL= 3 stars;

After so many enjoyable months of playing this game, I just played a No-Limit Texas Hold' em tournament hand, against a Cpu player, in which she checked the guaranteed best hand (stone cold nuts) on the river, when she was LAST to act (on the highest difficulty level of Professional). In my opinion, this is the kiss of death for a poker game! Anytime I come across this MAJOR FLAW in a poker game, I quickly try to unlock everything and then I sell it. However, in this game, since the Cpu only seems to check winning STRAIGHTS, it's not as terrible because straights don't occur too often anyway. So, surprisingly, I still enjoy playing it and can't seem to stop. I will also still play Omaha and the Heads-Up tournament mode to see if the Cpu players also sometimes check the absolute best hand on the river, when they're last to act. So far they haven't, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Anyway, I still think the game deserves a 4 star rating for FUN, but now, only a 3 star OVERALL rating (Amazon doesn't let you actually change the scores). Even though this major flaw seems to be rare (so far it's only happened with STRAIGHTS), and it even sometimes happens to real-life poker pros, if they misread the board, or their hand, it still annoys me!

Also, because the new 2008 WSOP PS2 game, is due out sometime in September or October of 2007, I would suggest you wait for that one to come out, instead of buying this flawed game. Hopefully, the new version, will be improved. I will certainly review it, and keep watching carefully for any rare bugs as I continually play it!

Just in case you're curious, here's the actual flawed betting hand, I just witnessed today. From previous hands in the tournament, I knew that the Cpu player (Tina Westbrook) I was up against, would often fold to even small bets on the Flop or Turn, if she had nothing, so that's how I bet this hand. I also kept the hand on the screen for a long time after it was over, to make sure I didn't misread the board somehow.

The Flawed Hand:
Career Mode: Professional difficulty.
Harrah's Rincon San Diego...$2500 No-Limit Texas Hold 'em tournament (324 players).

I had about $8500 in chips. Cpu player (Tina Westbrook) had about $25,000 in chips and was the chip leader. Blinds were $160/ $320 and there were about 140 players left in the tournament.
I had: 4 of Clubs and 4 of Hearts. Cpu (Tina) had: Queen of Hearts and 4 of Spades.

Preflop, I bet $640 (2 times the BB), and only one Cpu player called (Tina Westbrook- not a real poker pro). Pot= $1760

Flop was: 6 of Hearts-Jack of Spades-10 of Hearts. I bet $320 and she called. Pot= $2400

The Turn was the King of Clubs. I bet $720 and she called. Pot= $3840

The River was the Ace of Spades (giving the Cpu the nut straight). I checked. And then she CHECKED, when she was LAST to act, with the absolute BEST hand possible! DUMB BETTING ERROR! She had an Ace high straight and she should have at least bet the minimum of $320. Even if I also had a Queen, it would just be a tie when I called, and the pot would have been split between us. But since she didn't know what I had, she had to bet for value. I would have folded to any bet, but she couldn't know that. Oh well, at least I had fun playing this game for many months, until I noticed this major CPU betting flaw.

The rest of this review has only been slightly altered to include the fact about the new Cpu betting flaw mentioned above. As well, I removed a few things from my older review, to save space.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
-I used to love this game (until I saw the Cpu check the nuts on the river, when it was last to act), so I included more about it in the Amazon Forum section, located near the bottom of this web page,just after the customer reviews. Just click on, 'more' from my various WSOP:Tournament of Champions, Extended review posts.

-Because it looks less confusing in print, I call this game WSOP 2, instead of WSOP:TOC.

- I haven't played this game online, so this is an OFFLINE review only.

-Although I still enjoy the Cpu A.I. in this game, I prefer the A.I. of "Hard Rock Casino" (PS2), because of Hard Rock's more varied betting that's found in it's No-Limit Texas Hold'em game (although pre-flop suited hole cards are still over valued in it as well). In Hard Rock Casino, the Cpu players will often limp in (Call) pre-flop (even if they're first to act), and they also will vary the amount of their pre-flop raises much more than just the 2 or 3 times the big blind raises, or all-ins, that the WSOP 2 Cpu players usually make. Plus, in Texas Hold'em, the WSOP 2 Cpu players NEVER limp in, pre-flop, if they're first to act.

-On rare occasions, WSOP 2 will freeze, and you'll have to reset the PS2. Luckily, because it has an auto-save after every hand, you'll very rarely lose any hand result, unless the freeze occurs before the auto-save is activated.

INTRO:
I'm a big poker fan, so when I play almost any poker video game for the first hour or so, I will enjoy it. However, if you can't save during a tournament, or if the Cpu players occasionally just check or call when they have the absolute best hand, and they're last to act; only then, will I sell it. (Aug. 27th Update: Speak of the devil...I just discovered the Cpu players will sometimes check on the river when they're last to act, with the absolute best hand.)

Last year's WSOP (PS2 game), had washed out colors, no voices from any of the 12 pros,and it had both annoying and repetitive phrases utterred so often by the regular Cpu players,that it made me want to strangle them! It did however, at times, play a good game of poker,maniac style, but with way too many weak all-in calls, at any time, with absolute garbage hands! Even during the all-ins, there was no suspense because the cards were turned over at super speed. Also, the above-the-table view it mostly used, wasn't very interesting to look at, even though it was always easy to see where the dealer button or blinds were(even if they folded). But this year, the programmers of WSOP 2, have outdone themselves! Almost all of last year's major problems seem to have been fixed, with the exceptions of the still too cluttered playing view and the mouths of the players, moving much too fast, especially during closeups. Yes, the announcers still look hideous, but this time they included Norman Chad as Lon's partner, and many of the 30 pros actually look close enough to their real life counterparts. It's a much better looking game than last year's, by leaps and bounds, and thus takes a long 30 seconds to load. Thankfully, there's an instant auto save after each hand.

WSOP 2,actually looks like a finished product.Though similar in setup and features to last year's game,it has so many extras that the first game didn't have. Yes, you'll still see the Cpu players make some long-shot calls, or bluffs at weird times, but even real life pros do the same thing! It helps keep everyone honest, so you can't get away with either bluffing too often or always being able to correctly guess what the Cpu players have. All this is necessary, if a poker game is to provide enough of a challenge. However, just like all the other console poker games, these Cpu players also tend to over value their suited hole cards pre-flop, and will often call all-ins or go all-in with hands like 8-2 suited. This makes it much tougher to decide if you should call a Cpu's pre-flop all-in bet with your Ace-5 offsuit but I still enjoy the challenge.

FEATURES and IMPROVEMENTS:
Wow!!! This new game has the option of enabling Auto-Save after EVERY hand! It's so convenient,and you can keep on playing, even while it's making the 3 second save. Last year's game took about 45 seconds to save and then reload to the same spot where you exited. Thank you Activision for improving this! It's pure poker heaven, especially since occasionally the game will unfortunately freeze and you'll have to reset the PS2 and resume from the last auto-save! Although,when you first put in the game, because it doesn't auto-load from your memory card, you must first choose 'Career', then 'Create New Career' (or 'Load Career'-if you already have saved games), which will eventually enable the auto-save, once you finish choosing the Career difficulty level (only when first Starting your career) and the file name.

Yes, you can also still speed up the Cpu player betting, by choosing normal, medium or fast speeds (or by sometimes pressing the X button). Luckily, there's no more long waits during Omaha games for the Cpu players to bet, like in the first WSOP game.

Thankfully, it's great that they finally slowed down the dealing of the turn and river cards, so it's now much easier to follow what's going on (you can even press X to speed that up,if you want to), and even your name is highlighted in yellow with nice win %'s, that are still shown for all-ins (even pre-flop). Also, after a hand ends, you can still take your time seeing who had what, since you have to press the X button to deal the next hand anyway (yes, you can skip watching the deal too).

WSOP 2's Career Circuit mode, only has 4 circuit rounds (with 4 tournaments each) and then the Tournament of Champions round, for a total of 17 Texas Hold'Em circuit tournaments that can increase your bankroll and circuit points total. But at least in the 4th round there's the Main Event ($10,000 buy-in), which has 2592 players and a winner's payday of $5.4 million dollars. So yes, it's a much shorter and less varied Career mode than last year's game, but it's still fun to play.

Amazingly, from the Career menu, you can also play in a 16 player Heads-Up tournament, against real pro players. Luckily, in this mode, I so far haven't noticed the Cpu checking the river with the absolute best hand, when it's last to act (too bad it happens in the regular tournaments). If you want to play your first round against a different pro, just press the square button, then choose restart, and all the matchups will be randomly changed. No career stats for it are kept, but when I won all the 4 rounds I got the unlockable poker chip for it.

Quickplay mode doesn't have difficulty levels but it does let you rebuy (if you bust out) if you want to, but none of the Cpu players get to rebuy, so it's unfair. Quick play Custom tournaments can have up to 512 tables(9 players each)=4608 players.

The same games from last year are here in the new game as well, but this time it adds H.O.R.S.E to the mix.(All 5 games MUST be played as LIMIT only, but at least you can choose to change each game every 1 to 9 hands,but ONLY from Main Menu Options choice). Unfortunately, even in Quick play mode, you still must ALWAYS play 7 Card Stud or Razz,as LIMIT games only, which is very annoying and shouldn't be the case.

The Cpu player now occasionally shows you his cards, even if everyone folded to his bet, just to taunt you.

This is also the only console game to give you the option to see what the River card would have been, even if everyone folded! I love rabbit hunting, as it's sometimes called.

Still has the unlockable poker chips, very similar to last year's game.

There are 30 poker players in this game (all with their real voices), however the manual only lists 29 of them. The one not listed is Andy Black (and no,I'm not confusing him with Andy Bloch-who's #25 on this list). GAMEPLAY:
I'm currently playing in Career mode (it's different than last year's) on the hardest of the three difficulty levels,in a 27 player Texas Hold'Em Circuit Tournament (which awards points and cash). I finished in 5th place and got 20 points. The easier two difficulty levels will give you more money, if you need it, to continue your career if you should go broke; whereas on the hardest difficulty, if you go broke, your career is over.

Like all console poker games, the Cpu players in this game, tend to over value their LOW ranked suited hole cards pre-flop, and will often call all-ins or go all-in, with garbage like 8-2 suited. Suited hole cards only add about 3% to the overall hand strength, so bad cards are still bad cards even if their suited. As well, if I showed weakness (or slow-played) with my betting on the flop,turn, or river, then the Cpu might sometimes call with only King high or worse, but that's because it correctly thinks I may also have nothing. So far (on the hardest difficulty), the Cpu players rarely called my all-ins with garbage hands, unless they were suited pre-flop, or unless they were low on chips, or the pot was big and they wanted to gamble and try to double up, just like in real poker. Most of the crazy all-in calls made by the Cpu players from last year's game, are not present in WSOP 2, or at least are certainly not as frequent. I tested many consecutive all-ins (on the hardest career difficulty, or even in Quickplay mode), whenever I was in an early position and the first to bet. I got very few calls when the blinds were low, and no signs of stupidity, if I did get called. As well, if I showed weakness (or slow-played) with my betting on the flop, turn, or river, then the Cpu might sometimes call with only King high or worse, but that's because it correctly thinks I may also have nothing. Unfortunately, there is one minor annoying Cpu betting FLAW (not counting the newly discovered Cpu check on the river flaw-see Update at beginning of this review), that keeps this from being even closer to poker perfection and surprisingly, it wasn't a problem in last year's game. It has to do with the pre-flop betting, ONLY in Texas Hold'Em (on ANY Career Difficulty level, or in Quick play mode, whether pros are playing,or not). Whenever the Cpu has decided it wants to make a bet, and ONLY if it's the FIRST player to bet into a pot, it will NEVER just LIMP IN (Call). Instead, it will ALWAYS RAISE, and that Raise will be just 2, or 3 times the Big Blind or an All-In. It even occurs in the Heads-up Tournament, though of course, the Cpu will still often check, when it's the Big Blind (because it's second to act).

The only exceptions occur in Round 4 of the Career mode (Caesar's Palace-Las Vegas), in Event #2 ($2500 No-Limit Texas Hold'em) and in Event #4 ($10K Main Event). Since these are the only two events that have ANTES, the Cpu often bets a larger amount once the antes kick in. In event #4 (in addition to the standard 2 or 3 times the Big Blind Cpu bets), the Cpu will also bet as much as 4 times the BB amount. And in event #2, the Cpu players will also bet 4, 5, or even 6 times the BB amount. In addition, in Quickplay mode, when you include ANTES, the Cpu players will also bet increased amounts preflop (even 92 times the BB-if the starting chip stacks are large enough). As well, in Pot-Limit Texas Hold'Em, when the Maximum bet allowed is Less than 3 times the BB, then the Cpu bets 2 times the BB or makes the maximum bet allowed. Also, in Limit Hold'em, the Cpu will still always raise pre-flop, but only to the upper limit amount, since it can't bet more than that, when it's first to bet into a pot.

For No-Limit, this is NOT realistic enough pre-flop betting, because both Limping in and having more varied raises must be included, so that the game will seem more realistic. It WASN'T in last year's game (I just played it again,to be sure). In fact, last year's Cpu players that were FIRST into the pot, often Limped in, or even raised 4.5 times the BB or greater, on many occasions.

There are also a few minor Career stat FLAWS. One of them COUNTS the 4 handed Home game(that you must play just before Chris Ferguson lets you gain entry into the actual WSOP tournament) as a Tournament (a 1 appears beside the 'Tournaments Entered',stat row), and even if you win it, a zero is shown beside the 'Tournaments Won' stat row. As well, all the hand stats show zeros, because the Home game is NOT supposed to be a Career tournament anyway. So, in your mind, just always subtract 1, from the 'Tournaments Entered' stat, and then that stat will be correct. GRAPHICS:
I prefer to use the standard close-up view of the players when possible (works with Normal speed only) and they look somewhat similar to the Stacked pros, except a bit farther away from the camera and with absolutely NO slowdown occurring when they move. Only some of the pros, like Antonio Esfandiari for example, still need a few touch-ups to look more like the real thing, but most of the others look very good and are light years better looking than last year's dismal result. The overhead table view (that you see for medium or fast speed), looks actually less detailed than last year's game, but regardless of which view you use, you still get to see all the players betting information on the left side of the screen, in a similar style to that of the World Poker Tour (PS2)game, so you'll still be able to follow everything that's going on. The font in the new game is unfortunately smaller than it should be, but the game looks more colorful and looks good when it's showing the standard close up view of the players, while they are betting (in normal speed only), so just sit closer to your Tv set and you should be fine.

Unfortunately, the cards stayed the same small size as last year's game,but only the 7 card Stud and Omaha cards are too small to enjoy looking at. Also, they still have the 7 card Stud hole cards shaded too much, so that unless you turn up the brightness on your Tv, it's hard to distinguish the suits.

The players do handle their chips nicely (I even saw a woman do a knuckle roll chip trick), but because the betting motions are random, they often throw out just one chip when they make large bets, or bet many chips when they bet just $10. At least they do it realistically (unlike Stacked, which does it the worst). Even their chip stacks, correctly represent how much each player has, which is something you can easily see just by using the first person view (press R3-right joystick).

As well, even if the player ISN'T All-In, he'll sometimes move all his chips to the centre, even though it shows he still has money left over, based on his real bet. Luckily, it's just a graphical flaw, rather than a mathematical one. Then, the next time you see him, he has stacks of silver or pink chips. I guess he had them hidden under the table. You can however avoid all this chip handling, by choosing medium or fast speed.

AUDIO:
Right away, I got to play against several pros like last year's WSOP winner, Joseph Hachem, T.J. Cloutier and Phil Gordon, all using their real voices (no real pros spoke in last year's game). There are a total of 29 pros listed in the manual, but there are actually 30 pros in the game. Andy Black is the only pro not listed in the manual (see FEATURES,for the exact list), but I played against him in the Heads-Up Tournament, so I know he's in the game.

Sure, all the comments get repetitive fast, but some are funny and add tremendously to the overall game experience. As well, this time around, Norman Chad has been added to help out Lon McEachern call the action. The two of them look terrible in the intro and I laugh everytime their mouths start moving too fast, but you can just skip it by pressing X,anyway. Lon, now even calls out the cards as they're turned over , and Norman still makes me laugh, even though I've heard many of his comments several times already.

There's also probably a bit too much sneezing and coughing done by the players, but it's only mildly annoying at times. As well, there's no proper sound effect for when the chips hit the table, etc. Instead, they use the cards hitting the table sound effect, which looks and sounds silly.

CONCLUSION (Updated:September 22,2007):
I used to love this game. Unfortunately, after recently discovering the fact that the Cpu players will sometimes check on the river, with the absolute best hand possible (so far just with STRAIGHTS), when they're LAST to act, much of my passion has been crushed. Although, so far I haven't noticed the Cpu checking problem in the Heads-Up tournament mode or while playing Omaha, and WSOP 2 is still a fun game that includes more poker pros (30) than any other current game on the market. But since the new version is to be released in September or October of 2007, I'd suggest you try that one instead. And hopefully, they will have fixed the Cpu checking bug.

Ridiculous all-in calls

Despite the lengthy review of the other person...I do not know how you can miss the crazy calls by the cpu. Significant all-in calls with 6-3 10-8 offsuit etc. to the tune of 75-100% of their chips. Pre-flop, post-flop, it doesnt really matter, you will get called by players with nothing, only to see them hit running cards to make a straight. Play a free tournament on-line, you will see slightly better play.

Maybe 3 and a half stars...

Let me start off by saying- what the second reviewer mentioned is totally correct; The first player to act into an unraised pot will raise 99%+ of the time and yes it is very inaccurate.

But beyond that awful flaw, lies a pretty good game. The commentary is maybe a little above average but is a real improvement from last years version.

Starting out from the beginning of career mode might be more annoying then hard because there are no helpful cheat/tutor features such as "always see winning hand" et al. That is helpful for a few hours when beginning because you gain some insight on how the cpu plays.

So how does the cpu play on the default setting? Aggressive, generally. Simply put, someone will reraise preflop with k4 even with a decent stack.
Trapping is usually a good idea on this game and without running into a lot of bad beats, the AI isnt supremely skilled, as poker is totally a human game. I think of myself as a hobby player although i have won some 1-5-10$ nl and limit tourneys in the past and in the first 5 hours of this game, I won the 18 man limit tournament, the 16 player heads up tournament and the 4 player home game tournament. Like I said, be patient and trap with strong hands.

One of the best features in this game is the myriad of poker variations offered; Hold em, Stud, Stud 8/b, Omaha and Omaha 8/b, as well as Razz for good measure! I enjoy all of these games and think they should be included on every game of poker.

30 pros are listed in this game but sadly some very notable players were missing. Left out were Dolly Brunson, Johnny Chan, P. Hellmuth, D. Negreanu, etc etc etc...

Despite having a limited replay value in the long run, newcomers and owners of last years game should seriously consider picking up this title for under $30.

I love poker, I play a lot, I watch it on TV when I can, its all about seeing and playing hands, the more the better. I've played thousands of hands on this game, due to the extreme long times it takes to play a tournament because short stacks constantly double up, also because there are so many crappy all ins and preflop raises that are unbelievable with off suited low cards. Like the guy before me said I can't count the BS straights/flushes that the computer hits, ah everytime on the river. Plus can there be more split pots with the players holding the exact same hand? The career mode seems to be lacking all the other games (omaha, stud, etc.) and it has just 4 locations with just four events each that are all hold 'em events. Where is the Omaha in career mode? You basically get to play these same 16 events over and over and over, fun. I don't mind losing, its poker, you're gonna lose, but does it have to be to a BS straight on the river everytime? There also seems to be too many hands that get folded all the way around for the big blind to collect, unless of course you're the BB. And why can't you see other tables with players in the back ground? these are big tournaments right?the generic same crowd standing around one table every time sucks. Maybe pop ins from all ins from other tables to break up the action? And you will never start a tournament at a table with one of the pros, at some point you'd think you would get at one of the big players' table at the start? For such a crappy poker sim, poker programs are some of the first ever simple programs written for computers 50 yrs ago, this should be way better and it should've only been $19 tops or anyone who buys the game gets a real seat at the 07 WSOP in Vegas, HAHA please.

Damn Good Game .. for Fun or Learning

Ok, so Im not at all one of those people whose like "OMG THIS GAME IS A 15 OUT of 10!!" Im mean lets be reasonable. However, I will say I would seriously have liked to give this game that 6th star.

As the title implies, this is definately a damn good game, whether your looking to learn the game of Poker(spefically No-Limit Hold-Em and the likes)or you think yourself a seasoned "pro" and are looking to hone your skills then this is a great game. Even if you are a "poker pro" you will definately pick up some tips and learn different strategies here, and as they say: practice makes perfect! Also, for anyone who falls in between the two this is still a wonderfully delightful buy (and at 19.99 right now you cant really go wrong)!

Now, personally as a poker player I would rate myself somewhere around amateur(I wouldnt say Im horrible by any means and Im no novice, but Im not exactly wearing any bracelets around my wrist heh) level. Also, I own more than a few other Poker and Hold-Em titles on both the PC and PS2. Ive got to say, in all honesty, this kind gave me some renewed faith if you will. I mean, no offense to any of the devs or whatever, but alot of poker games out there just suck(no matter what you're looking for out of it). I offer this as an opinion, and I mainly look to these sort of games to hone my skills and yet more so for the fun factor. This game delivers on both levels adequately.

Also, as far as just the gameplay itself, I was also pretty satisfied. I've played previous poker games with claims of "animorphic face gestures" or "player facial animations" and the such. Ill admit, you cant get picture perfect reads but you can definately spot players reactions around the table and pick up on there negative and positive reactions QUITE well.
Also, the player AI is pretty damn good as well. I have to say, that of course if you've got a poker all-star seated at the table, he wont necessarily possess his real-life talents but their AI is definately a suitable representation in my opinion.

Career Mode in this game is alot of fun and gives you keen sense of learning the ropes and working your way up through various casinos. Also, its kinda neat unlocking items and what not for your My Poker Room.

Will ruin your poker skills

Like many reviewers have stated the cpu play is horrible, only to be saved by running cards. I can give hundreds of examples, but here's the one that made me write this review. I raised 10 times the blind (you have to do these huge raises to get ANYONE to fold), I had AJs. I was called by a player with 7 / 2 offsuit. The ABSOLUTE worst starting hand in poker. I go all in when the board pairs my Jack the cpu calls and gets a 2 and a 7 on the turn and river. Notice that the all in call (virtually all his chips) was made with nothing. This is one of several examples. I started to keep track of the flushes, straights and full houses and the percentage is remarkable for the cpu.

Conversely, I found that when I had the nuts, the cpu would rarely ever call any amount of a bet. So you can't bluff, because you'll get called with ANYTHING and then lose, and you can't bet your nut hands because no one will call.

Thus, this game will RUIN your poker skills if you're trying to get better at poker. Try Poker Academy instead. Much more realistic cpu play.

I wrote an E-mail to describe my problem as follow..........each time I loaded the game and attempted to "run" the game, I received an error saying that "d3dx9_30.dll" could not be found. I the received a second(identical) CD(within one week of the first) with the same result. I asked for advice and have yet to receive any response. I've have the merchanise for over 30 days. The E-mail was sent after I received the second CD. I thought it was a Part 2.
I have no confidence in the contact system/customer service. Not making any more orders too soon.

okay this game is a good sequel..actually very very good...but where is Mike Matusow? Doyle Brunson? Sam Farha? Dan Harrington? Phil Ivey? Greg Raymer? Annie Duke? etc. Where are the elite poker pros? where are they at? they shouldve at least added LOTS of top named poker elite or at least a hollywood poker player like Jennifer Love Hewitt..haha...well..cant ask for more..anyways get this game..its pretty good..

This game looks like it was just thrown together at the last minute. The commentary by Norman Chad and Lon is repetitive and the graphics are poor. You are better off playing on-line for practice. Slow and boring.

The game makes me feel like I am actually playing at the Tournament of Champions. Very realistic feel and game play. I have picked up so many skills and abilities from playing the game. Playing for real money in real life has never been easier than now.
