Not the uber game some claim, but still definitely worth it!

While I never played the original, I've always heard much about it and have wanted to for a long time. Finally my chance has come, and boy am I glad.

The battles are standard fare safe for a few characters' special abilities. They can get somewhat tedious after a while, especially when trying to level up at the high levels. The story, though, is a great one with some very memorable characters. In all honesty I don't think it's better than FF7, but 7 was my first and it'll always have a special place in my heart, so I may be biased. This is definitely worth the buy, though, so if you're thinking of getting it, go ahead and do so. You won't regret it.

Great Classic

This game has a great story and a great cast of characters with unique traits (however you won't be using all of them throughout the game unless you want to.) I wasn't able to beat this game back in the day the first time I played (maybe 10 years ago or so) it on the SNES, but I was able to beat this version since I was already familiar with the game. Anyway the only con I have to mention is the sound quality, but other than that the game is fantastic and a memorable experience.

For anyone who owns a Gameboy and still plays it, or a DS and they feel nostalgic or want a solid classic RPG experience, this is definitely for you. This game is still very good, even by today's standards. As a Gameboy game, it is peerless.

Great Game, With one minor Flaw

This game is Great. Good graphics, excelent Soundtrack and a Compelling History with interesting characters that will inmerse you very quickly in the war against the Ghestalian Empire. The only problem with the game is that the random battles are extremely continuous and that can be quite exasperating after the 15-20 Hours Mark. However, if you like the RPG's it shouldn't discourage you from playing it because even now, after so many years from the original release it's still a great game.

the definitive RPG experience

This was the first game that made me think about myself as a human being. With characters that are well-rounded enough to have been crafted by Shakespeare, a sophisticated plot, and an adventure tall enough to keep you playing 40 hours later, there is no question that this game is one of the greatest of all time.

Nostalgia Fans Need Only Apply

From a nostalgia perspective, FF VI may only appeal to an older group of foks who have played this game when they were younger on more primitive gaming platforms. However, for people like myself, some be turned off.
I offer up this analogy: If your first car was an old beat up Chevy Nova that you have a lot of fond memories in, then taking a ride in that car for old times sake can bring back those great memories. However, if you delayed getting your license until later in life and your first car was a new BMW, taking a drive in a beat up Nova now is going to feel pretty lame. If your first experiences in RPGs include Knights of the Old Republic, Final Fantasy X & XII, and Elder Scrolls III & IV, then FF VI is going to be that Chevy Nova.
I tried to like this game, but I am also playing it on a DS Lite, thereby further tarnishing my opinion of the game. The graphics and sound are basically limited. The story is incredibly overrated and just didn't grip me in the least. To boot the battle system just pales in comparison to the aforementioned RPGs.
Sorry, I don't want to offend anyone, this is just a humble opinion from someone who has only experienced RPGs in the last three years, so please take that into consideration.

Epic classic that will grip you from beginning to end.

I must say that this RPG is and clearly is the best RPG game ever made.I have played this game countless times before. I own the original SNES cartridge and PS1 game. The game in itself is tale like no other, never in a game have I felt the way these characters capture you with their story.Everyone in this game has reason for being there and you will want to be there also to see them through. The music score in this game is phenominal even though it was created on a system had little audio advancement but it still pulled through to keep the music humming in your head for days (in my case years after I put down the controller). The artistry is one the best ever and effects are beyond. It's too bad this game didn't get the remake it really deserved like a full 3D version not some slapped up CG cut scenes like on the PS1 or a better face lift like FF3 on DS (shame on you SquareEnix). With all that aside though I wouldn't recommend any other game that has the visual, emotional & musical attraction that is Final Fantasy VI.

A true classic, and a excellent remake. FFVI is my Favorite of the 2D Final Fantasy's, but do love them all. A must have for any Final Fantasy Fan.

One of the best Final Fantasy games and RPG's

My cousin was a massive RPG fan in the day, playing everything from Secret of Mana to Link to the Past to Chrono Trigger. The other one that he played heavily was Final Fantasy III. It's common knowledge by now that III was the third game released in America even though Japan had released six, hence America numbering it 3. Despite the fact the game's been out for years and I even own the Anthology release, I decided to properly play the game since I never beat it before and it's still a great story, memorable characters and scenes while having solid gameplay. It bugs me that there has been multiple releases of the same game but when it's as good as Final Fantasy VI, it's forgivable.

Story: Previous installments took place in a more fantasy Medieval Ages-type setting. VI shows more of an Industrial Era world with the ancient magic disappearing and technology starting its takeover. The Gestahlian Empire has been making problems for the people with resistance from a small group called the Returners. One day, an Empirical soldier named Terra is found with amnesia and they decide to take her in and figure out how to take down the Empire and restore the world to normal.

Graphics: Strangely enough the graphics almost seem...sharper here. But it's basically the same thing that was on SNES and the PSX release but more cleaner. It of course looks outdated, especially when it employs the Mode-6 system and we get the 3D-esque stuff. But it's got enough of a look to keep you interested as well as some humorous moments when characters do an exaggerated shocked reaction.

Sound/Music: The effects are pretty minimal but where the game shines naturally is in the music. Before composer Nobuo Uematsu started to do the whole rock orchestra stuff, he did some of the most catchiest and heartfelt pieces of music around. From the ethereal Terra's Theme (made even better on a separate piano release) to the eerie Phantom Forest to the opera favorite Aria de Mezzo Caraterre to the psycho-ish Dancing Mad, nearly every track is a keeper. But you'll notice some of it just...sounds different. It's best that you buy the soundtrack since not only does it sound better but it's just good support.

Gameplay: Final Fantasy tends to be separated into 2 categories: job systems and assigned classes. Either you can manipulate what your characters can become (Materia System, Job System) or each character has a specific style of fighting (Final Fantasy IX and IV). VI has kind of a mix where each character has a specific class such as a thief, a ninja, an artist that can control the enemies and many more. However, there's a system called the Esper system where the summons ("Espers" in the game) can be attached to a character one at a time and you can learn the spells that comes with each one and have little bonuses.

The game isn't really that difficult but it's best to level up at periodic times rather than going into grinding mode and levelling up like crazy. Some enemies are pretty easy but other times you'll find it gets tense and you'll feel relief when you win. If there is any flaw at all with the game, it's that there's tons of characters. Some of them get backstories to uncover, while others just feel thrown in there. It allows a bigger range of characters to choose from but the party just seems too stacked and full.

When it comes down to Final Fantasy games and which one's the best, the general consensus is that it's either the ever-popular VII or this one. Doesn't matter which one it is but it's still a great installment and just a great RPG in and of itself.
