I bought this game a while ago, when it was at list price, played it after playing several other RPG's, and was stunned,,, but not in a good way. I gave up after about 4 hours of play and decided I wasn't getting it. I tried again a month later and lasted 10 hours, still thought that there might be something that I didn't understand. My last try was about 15 hours, and I can state unequivocally that there is nothing to get. This is not a good game, not even a mediocre one, for that matter.
Perhaps the single most glaring flaw is the non-existent animation. Outside of some cut scenes and so-so battle action this is in what Square Enix calls "sketch motion" which means - no motion at all. So help me, one character's sketch appears with a balloon of text, then another, then... Throw in a barebones mapping facility that does the travel and you have the entire art effort. This isn't a game, it's a prototype for one.
The battle system is almost as bad. You have to set up all your characters' moves ahead of time, one painstaking button press at a time. Then, when the action actually starts you have to hit a button while a battle wheel spins. Most of your opponents actually die of boredom.
The story line is doled out in bite-sized bits but what I've seen is pretty run of the mill. Playing Unlimited Saga is actually painful, as you follow a set of meaningless actions using a game structure that was out of style in 1995. the best I can say about is that Square Enix must have cancelled the game before the animation, and has published it to try to recoup their investment.
Unless you collect total failures, pass this one by.

What a waste of time and money. I bought this out of brand loyalty to Squaresoft, a mistake I will not be repeating. What threw me at first were the horrible graphics, I've played games on the SNES that were superior. While I'll admit the cinematic sequences were interesting and unique, the static nature of the navigation screen and the pathetic battle screen animations were without any redeeming qualities.
The fighting system could have been facinating if paired with a more engaging interface. Basing attack strength partly on the traditional stats and adding a wheel-of-fortune like combination of skill and luck on the player's part give the fight sequences as much realism as a computer game with bad graphics can have.
After two hours of playing, I'd had enough and returned it. If you consider innovation and retro graphics good qualities in a game, then buy Unlimited Saga. If you are like me and prefer a game with visual appeal in addition to a good story, vibrant characters and engaging gameplay (all of which Unlimited Saga also lacks) cross your fingers and hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
worst rpg ever

Don't bother to know what it is. I bought it at around $10. Worst than the Final Fantasy's series. Worst than the Dark Cloud series. Worst than the Star Ocean's series. "Something" that should have never seen the light. Not even worth 1 star (but is required to put at least 1).
Save your money and buy something better

Cons:
1) Akward battle system
2) Weapons that have limited use (like in dark cloud where weapons can break) and are nigh imposible to extend use(not like dark cloud where weapons can be repaired)
Pros:
1) If you are a hunter you can have someone launch the disk into the air and use it for target practice.
In short: Not good, don't bother playing it. You have been warned.
Stupid piece of $HIT!!!!

this game is so horrible,i've only been playing for about 10 mins, and half the time i don't even know what im doing.
you play as one of 7 characters(u can pik which one).i don't know why they call it an RPG,it doesn't seem like it.there is no leveling up system,so u just fight and get killed for no reason.when u move around on the map or dungeon whatever,ur character looks like a chess piece(im serious),there is this ring thingie on top of the characters head,u use the analog stik to move the ring thingie and ur chracter will move in that direction.when u enter a town,u cannot even explore in it! u can either look for a mission and gather info,or buy weapons.
the only good thing about this game is the battle animation(surprised?).when u enter a battle, the graphics are so beautiful!
im glad i didn't buy the game for $49.99 when it came out.i bought it for about $15.00 brand new.
****REMINDER~~~~~ PLEASE do not buy this game, unless ur retarted or somethin.u WILL regret it,i promise u....
don't wast your money

Unlimited Saga is a terrible RPG in almost every way. The graphics are horrid, both in the cutscenes and in the game. The music is subpar and cliche'. The game system is completely unintuitive, both on the world map and in combat scenes. The voice acting is disgustingly bad. The city menu is limited and almost useless. If you are a fan of RPGs you may get a few scraps of fleeting amusement out of this game, otherwise you are in trouble. Avoid this game at all costs.
An utter disappointment...

Square dropped the ball with this title. A waste of time on so many, many levels. An uninspired journey into boredom.
The combat system is... not bad. Interesting. Different, yes. If the gameplay were even remotely interesting, the combat system would push this into the highest echelon of rpg's.
Thing is, the gameplay is *horrible*. Boring, boring, boring. There's no animations worth dealing with, everything is 2 dimensional flat cutout images in a pseudo 3-dimensional world. Exploration is boring. Interaction is boring. Everything, in fact, aside from the battle system is... boring.
The battle/combat system alone isn't enough to save this game. Terrible. Don't waste your time or your money.
deserves -100 stars

I love Squaresoft (or Square-Enix now) so I tried to be open-minded and give this game a chance. To be on the safe side, I rented it from Blockbuster just in case I didn't like it. I am so glad that I didn't waste the money to buy this as it is by -far- the WORST rpg I have ever attempted to play. This game doesn't even merit the one star rating that I gave it.
You won't find Squaresoft's signature stunning graphics or addicting gameplay here. The characters appear to be rough sketches, quickly cut out and thrown onto the screen with speech balloons, similar to reading a comic book.
Within the first five minutes, you are thrown into what appears to be a set-up or configuration menu. However, I discovered that this is how you "navigate" through the world. Your character is merely a shadow on the so-called map (also crudely drawn). To manuever through this non-existent world, you must wrestle with the analog stick and choose one of the tiny boxes that pops up. It's extremely tedious and monotonous.
I personally dislike first person perspective shooter games since they only create environments and maybe a few animations of loading a gun or lights reflecting off a weapon. Sadly, those games involved a lot more effort from the development team. I don't know what Square was thinking on this one.
My advice, this game is only worth renting if you want to see a long preview for Final Fantasy X-2. If you're looking for a high quality rpg, you won't find it here. Hold out for Final Fantasy X-2 or Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time.
