Computer Wargaming at its Best!!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 9

As a avid wargamer, I love playing tabletop wargames from Squad-Leader to Axis & Allies. The one problem with table top wargaming is keeping all the details, ranges, units, etc. in tact. As a general you usually have aids and other officers helping to decipher all the details. While playing a table top wargame you have to keep track of everything yourself. This also slows the game down. The other thing that I always found lacking in table top gaming is Fog-of-war. You are always, for the most part, able to see what your opponent is doing.
Computer gaming has allowed for taking the table top wargaming to the next level. Keeping extensive online databases of unit information, calculating max fire effects, movement cost, indirect fire, and more. Computer wargaming has also been able to introduce counter maps and full 3D views.
With the addition of Play-By-EMail (PBEM(, the ability to design maps and scenarios, and change the look of the units (yes, you can modifiy the BMP files and change the looks of each unit), everything a wargamer wanted is now complete.
World at War (EastFront II, WestFront, and Rising Sun) have encapsulated all these abilities and more.
If you like turn-based games, WWII, table-top wargaming, ability to play by email or hotseat, and a strong AI. This is for you.
Of course I will pull out Axis and Allies when I want a good beer and chips game to play with friends, but when it comes to serious wargaming I reach for West Front to play North Africa and Western Europe, EastFront II for Russia and the Eastern Europe, or Rising Sun for the Pacific theater.
There are many websites with tons of new scenarios, information, strategy articles, and opponents to play. ...This was the best game purchase I have made in a long time and it resides on my laptop and home computer.

What a Bargain!

To think any of us would have paid this price for one of the game individually. Now you have them all. It is a pleasure playing from the African Desert to Guadalcanal; and everything in between. With this bundle, you should be kept busy playing for the next year or two.

You get over 350 different scenarios on 3 cds!! That is enough for most people to go out and get a game. I really enjoy playing in the different campaign locations that seem so realistic for where they are. The Germans are the nastiest simply because they have the best weapons throughout the war and this is illustrated beautifully by Talonsoft.

The ONLY drawback to the game(s) is that the boxed set comes without a manual for you to read or go over while cutting your teeth on the tutorials. This lack of documentation makes the learning curve a little harder than it has to be, seeing how you have to figure out what all the stats and how to use them thru trial and error.

All in all, once you get past the learning curve, the game becomes very enjoyable. If you are on the fence about getting this game, please, do yourself a favor and get it. It is well worth it!!

You cant beat this

Although I already have Eastfront, its expansion and Westfront, I was still compelled to purchase this. Why ? Because this package includes Fall of the Reich, Westfront expansion, Risingsun and more scenarios again in Eastfront. This package represents the final end product(s) after all the fine tunning and there is just so much in this package that it is unbelievable that it is priced as if it were one game. This is a must if you are into wargaming, you simply cant beat this for value for money.

Perfect

Nothing you can say about this. For the low price and you can get the BEST PC war game in package. You cannot ignore to buy it if you are a REAL war gamer. Trust me.

The most complete wargaming package ever. The biggest game bargain that I can recall. All the bugs worked out from previous releases of the games. A "must have" if you are even remotely into wargames.

Great game about the Greatest and Bloodiest War in History.

On East Front II is my third favorite because it allows you play either the German Army, Polish Army, Finnish Army or the Red Army of the Soviet Union. In this game you can play the begin of the World War II in Europe when Nazi Germany invade Poland , then the Winter War between Finland and The Soviet Union. Then the fun begins when Hitler's Germany starts Operation Barbarossa the all out invasion of Stalin's Soviet Union in which Germany conquer the Ukraine. During Barbarossa one of the longest sieges in history begins at Leningrad. Then one of my favorite parts of the game is the what if portions where is what if Germany had gotten Moscow. Then Operation Typhoon was the offensive planned by Germany to capture Moscow and win the war against the Soviet Union after the long and terrible winter Russia had. Also the Russian Winter Offensive of 1941/42 to recapture Kharkov. Play the legendary battle of Stalingrad which ended the myth of the German's army invincibility. Then see the battles to recaptures of the Ukraine and to the Capitol of Germany Berlin. All this and more on this game. I like this because its show the battles between two Dictators in Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin. My one problem with this game is that when I'm playing as the Red Army of the Soviet Union I cannot fire on my own men when they retreat. The reason is Stalin gave orders to shoot soldiers who retreated. All in all fun game with a lot of history.

On West Front Gold you can play as the British Army, The French Army, The Italian Army, Germany Army, Canadian Army and The United States Army. In this you can see and play Germany's invasion of Norway and the Fall of Belgium, Holland and France. In the what if part of this game is Operation Sea Lion the invasion of Great Britain. Then we go to Africa as Germany's Afrika Corps battles The British. We go back to Europe for Operation Jubilee , the original full scale invasion of Europe which ended in failure. Back to Africa to the legendary battle for El Alamein between German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel and British Field Marshall Sir Bernard Law Montgomery. Then to the American invasion of North Africa then the battles for Tunisia with the infamous battle at the Kasserine Pass and American General George S. Patton Jr. victory at Maknassy Pass. Then the invasion of Sicily and Italy. Now the best part of the game is The Longest Day in history June 6, 1944 D-Day the invasion of Europe. You play the British Sixth Airborne Division as they hold The Orne River Bridge until they are relieved. Then be "The Screaming Eagles" or the American 101st Airborne Division as they near Ste. Come Du-Mont and 505th Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division near Ste. Mere-Eglise. Then follow The British 3rd Infantry Division on Sword Beach. Then follow the American 1st Infantry Division has they landed Omaha Beach. Then we go to liberate France and then Operation Market Garden and see its blunder. Then the Battle of the Bulge. Then to the end of World War II in Europe. This is my second favorite for the fact it has more history in it and a ton of great battles to play.

Rising Sun Gold is my favorite because of the battles between The Japanese Imperial Army and The United States Military. First part of this games is the Japan's territorially conquest of Hong Kong, Singapore, Burma, Malaya, Bataan and Corregidor in the Philippines, French Indo-China and the Dutch East Indies. Then we follow the U.S. Marines as they begin at Guadalcanal and go to New Guinea; then to the Marshall Islands; then to Saipan and Guam. Also play the British as they defend India. Back to the Marines as they fight Tinian , Palau Islands and back to The Philippines. Then go to Iwo Jima and the U.S. Invasion of Okinawa. And in the what if part is Operation Olympic the invasion of the home island of Japan.

This is a great deal for a game with all the theaters of World War II. I recommend this for people who like history.

World at War inre: Campaign Series

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 7

Having played the Campaign series games since the first inception "East Front" and eventually migrating to the newer updates such as West Front, East Front II, and Rising Sun I have found them to be extremely challenging as far as turn based WW II games go. Each release brings improvements in the game engine and graphics, While I give this game 5 stars (a somewhat biased opinion) Their is one thing lacking which seems to be the case with all WW II games and that is the factual listing of Units and Formations. But here is where the flexibility of the game has been changed. Their are many clubs world wide that sponsor these games and allow many players to challenge each other which makes for added excitement. either PBEM or face to face online with up to 8 players (team games) can play online in this excellent drama of WW II. I myself belong to The Blitzkreig Wargamers Club and am proud to be a part of a great bunch of players. With my recent move into staff position I along with other fellow Historians worldwide and Programmers are developing what should be the most precise Orders of battles files ever in the History of WW II gaming. The CS games are easy to learn and anyone can defeat the AI in short time unless you value your relationship then it may take longer :-)

Ulitmately playing against other human opponents via email or online vastly improves the game experience While this is to be the last series released by Talonsoft their will be a release written by our group that will update all the units and we hope to have it official from TS (talonsoft) with their blessing.

So if you enjoyed playing boardgames as a kid, teenager, or adult I recommend playing the Campaign Series and what better deal than to get all 3 games under one title "World at War".
