Make Sure You Have a DVD-Rom NOT a CD-Rom

I was very excited to get this game and the day I got it in the mail from amazon I went straight to the computer and the game simply wouldn't load. The reason is because I have a regular CD-rom not a DVD-Rom, therefore the game doesn't work. So I take it to my laptop and try it there. However, if you read the small print on the box it says it won't work with laptops because of the graphics card, so the game just "glitches" through everything. Overall, I was extremely excited for this game, I'm sure it's really great, but just make sure you have what you need to play it!

BE WARNED - Little or no support available

BUYER BEWARE!

I bought this title for my soon-to-be 10 year old daughter (who has several of the "Let's Ride" games as well as a few other of the available 3D horse riding games. They all have similar features, some just do it better than others.

While this game looks polished and runs smoothly, I was extremely upset to find that there were NO INSTRUCTIONS in the box. I bought it here from Amazon, and it was in a shrink-wrapped box, but there were only setup instructions which included information that to get the full manual, go to the maker's website. But while the website was correct, the page where the manual supposedly was downloadable wasn't there (page not found error in browser). I browsed the entire website - which is 100% marketing - little or no support. Nothing.

What makes this such a big deal is that there are icons on the screen while practicing/competing that represent your horse's stamina, hapiness, whatever (who knows since they aren't labeled w/text?) but because of the lack of instructions, it's impossible to complete an event w/out your horse tiring out and failing.

This game would be great if the manufacturer (and/or distributor) supported it properly. But like most of the horse game genre, there's little or no support available. Right now it collects dust while my daughter plays scratched up older titles. Every time she tries to play, it just frustrates her to the point she now says, "I hate this game!" As such, I can't give it more than a one, no matter how "pretty" it looks.

*** UPDATE 5/29/2008 ***

I emailed the publisher asking how to get instructions (got the email from the website listed on the installation instructions) and received no response. This game is still practically unplayable and I stand firmly behind my original one star rating. Too bad, I would have much preferred to have removed it.

Preety good, but not perfect

This game is alot of fun but there are many things I would change if possible, for example, the difficulty levels go to extrermes. Also, the game is mostly riding and sometimes I just want to shut the mentor feedback up. I admit, I have played better games, yet this one is second best so far. P.S.-If you have an older computer, under 10, or inexpirenced at gaming, buy Equestriad first. P.S.#2- This is an honest comment, not a fact, I am just trying to let others know some unmentioned parts to the game that may hesitate the buying a game that can cause alot of irritation in kids who want an game that is horse related ( not a hard reqest ) and a perfect game ( impossible).

Fun game but ....

Let's get to the good stuff first... I am a western rider so buying this game not knowing what to expect I was a bit skeptical. The graphics of this game are fantastic - the horses are very "real" as are the riders you get to create in the image of yourself. You get to take care of the horse you create and you get to ride three disciplines - Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country. Now being from the western style of riding, I've never done any of the three and had no clue as to what they involve. The Dressage portion you'll need hand and eye coordination and you definitely need no distractions if you want to succeed in all three events. This part of the game is the most fun and worth it. You also have Lucinda giving you encouragement and tips as you go along - which is good.

Now for the bad stuff. Well, not so much bad stuff but I was wanting basic horse supplies when I first tried the game - you will eventually get all the supplies you need but you have earn the items. So the more you win events, the more stuff you get. And basically you start off with the bare basics, one outfit per event for you and your horse. As you win events, you receive treats such as better tack, better clothes, and sweets for your horse. The other thing is that most of the movement is with your keyboard, not your mouse. I'm better with the mouse than the keyboard, so this has proven a challenge for me, somewhat. The cross country courses are a bit confusing, especially for me, since I've never done those before. The Dressage takes some time to get the knack if you don't know what it is or how the patterns go. It's best to get into a rhythm and stick with it. I was hoping for more interaction with other riders and others on the farm.

If you have a good graphics card, and a strong computer, you are going to be pleased with this game. Once you get started, this game is very addicting!

It's an awesome game. I can spend hours on end just playing it and totally lose track of time because I am so involved in the game. It really sucks you in. Gotta love it!

I Loved the graphics! It was great over all but I wish they could have an adventure mode. It would be a whole lot funner than just doing competions! If you want a GREAT adventure game Saddle up with Pippa Funnell is the best game I have ever played. I finished and could play it again and still have fun!

Fun!

Even though the description says it is not meant to work with laptops or integrated sound/video, it happens to work fine on my year old HP laptop. Not perfect, but pretty fun and nice to look at.

It sure is pretty

My daughter loves the game, being her first PC game she has received. The graphics are well done and with a powerful enough PC everything flows nicely. My main complaint is the documentation is severely lacking, so if you don't listen to the explanation the first time it will take you awhile to figure out how to control the horse (with very little written documentation to fall back on). Plus it requires the use of the keyboard most of the time instead of an optional gamepad. This program would be five stars with gamepad support.

A very realistic, fun game

Equestrain challenge is a great game. You ride in 2-star, 3-star, and 4-star events that get progressivly harder. The events are just right, not so hard it takes you forever to get through them, but not so easy that you're done with them in a few days. Though a large part of the game is riding, you also take care of your horse by feeding, watering, brushing and making your horse happy. As you win different events you unlock things that make the care of your horse easier. A problem with the game is that when unlock more horses as you progress though the game they don't have devolpment-points which you get as you go on to harder levels. Once you finish events you earn developement-points that make your horse perform better. Without these points you can not win the harder events. When you get new horses they don't have these points...so you can't compete in the harder events with them. I don't mind this to much, but
it would be more fun if you had a lot of horses to ride in the harder events. That is why I gave it four stars for the overall rating.
Even with the problem, the game is still very fun and I reccomend you get it.

I own this game and i LOVE it...I can't stop playing it..the graphics are amazing and i like the fact that you can create your own horse instead of just picking the horses they have...I do think that they should've included a bigger variety of horse breeds to choose from...i reccomend this game to anyone who's a horse lover, rides in three day events like i do,and has a TON OF PATIENCE...because the four star training can become frustrating...I like this game a whole lot better than Time To Ride and My Horse Farm
