Over the past 2 years, I've been obsessed with playing horse PC games. Unfortunately a lot of the horse games out there that I've tried are incredibly ridiculous and not very much fun. Equestrian Challenge, however, is definitely the best out there so far that I've tried. It's challenging, fun, user friendly and rewarding. I recommend this to any horse crazy person out there!
It sure is pretty

My daughter loves the game, being her first PC game she has received. The graphics are well done and with a powerful enough PC everything flows nicely. My main complaint is the documentation is severely lacking, so if you don't listen to the explanation the first time it will take you awhile to figure out how to control the horse (with very little written documentation to fall back on). Plus it requires the use of the keyboard most of the time instead of an optional gamepad. This program would be five stars with gamepad support.
Exelent game, but it has its bad points.

almost every thing in this game is wonderfull, but the dressage is a complete disapointment (i am a dressage rider myself) you don't actualy control the horse, only press the arrow keys in the order they tell you. The horse is always leading with the wrong front leg in the canter, the tests are nothing like real ones, you can't use a double bridle in the forth riding levels like you use a double bridle in the upper levels in real life. Only a snaffle bridle throughout the whole game and if any dressage test was done like those in real life they would get 30% out of 100% at best, because the horse is never round, throws his head around and steps forword in the halt and thats just part of it. But the many problems with the dressage are almost made up for by the graphics, which are incredible.
BE WARNED - Little or no support available

BUYER BEWARE!
I bought this title for my soon-to-be 10 year old daughter (who has several of the "Let's Ride" games as well as a few other of the available 3D horse riding games. They all have similar features, some just do it better than others.
While this game looks polished and runs smoothly, I was extremely upset to find that there were NO INSTRUCTIONS in the box. I bought it here from Amazon, and it was in a shrink-wrapped box, but there were only setup instructions which included information that to get the full manual, go to the maker's website. But while the website was correct, the page where the manual supposedly was downloadable wasn't there (page not found error in browser). I browsed the entire website - which is 100% marketing - little or no support. Nothing.
What makes this such a big deal is that there are icons on the screen while practicing/competing that represent your horse's stamina, hapiness, whatever (who knows since they aren't labeled w/text?) but because of the lack of instructions, it's impossible to complete an event w/out your horse tiring out and failing.
This game would be great if the manufacturer (and/or distributor) supported it properly. But like most of the horse game genre, there's little or no support available. Right now it collects dust while my daughter plays scratched up older titles. Every time she tries to play, it just frustrates her to the point she now says, "I hate this game!" As such, I can't give it more than a one, no matter how "pretty" it looks.
*** UPDATE 5/29/2008 ***
I emailed the publisher asking how to get instructions (got the email from the website listed on the installation instructions) and received no response. This game is still practically unplayable and I stand firmly behind my original one star rating. Too bad, I would have much preferred to have removed it.

I'm having lots of fun with this game. The horses are given several characteristics such as jumping, speed and trust. After each training session or competition, you are given points to apply to each category. So you'll notice the changes in your horse as it gains stamina or agility. It's like watching the horse learn. Creating the horses is fun too. I created a big black warmblood mare but I have a soft spot for my tiny gray thoroughbred. And, just as in real life, size matters too. The thoroughbred is more challenged with some of the higher jumps but is more nimble than the big warmblood.
The only complaints I really have about Equestrian Challenge is that the dressage events are done by selecting your left, right and up and down arrows on your keyboard to a corresponding pattern on the screen. Sometimes I'm too busy watching the horse going through the excercise to catch the next arrow to key on time. Also, you can only have one horse in a paddock at a time. It would be great to watch them frolicking about or lazily chomping grass together.
Awesome game, great graphics, GOOD BUY!

This game was amazing! the horses are really realistic and it is way more fun that the numerous other horse games i have played. You can own up to six horses per game and can save 4 games. They dont have very many color options for creating your horses but it is still a fun game! The cross country is the hardest game, you have to learn how to pace your horse and get over the jumps and all. The dressage is fun, and is kinda like dance dance revolution. Show jumping is the easiest but still can be challenging. all together a good game.

This is the best horse games you can ever find. I have a horse and when I play some of these games they don't do stuff like you would in real life. The graphics are AMAZING they are all to life like. You can have several horses of any color combos you would like and there is three breeds. IT EVEN has how tall they are. That is so specific in a game.
Some things you do are...
You train you horse in speed and such.
Compete in dressage, jumping and cross country
Diffrent levels of competition
Like I said this game is got the best graphics ever and is so specific and correct in the care of your horse and is not the least bit annoying. It even saves by itself.
BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!
Preety good, but not perfect

This game is alot of fun but there are many things I would change if possible, for example, the difficulty levels go to extrermes. Also, the game is mostly riding and sometimes I just want to shut the mentor feedback up. I admit, I have played better games, yet this one is second best so far. P.S.-If you have an older computer, under 10, or inexpirenced at gaming, buy Equestriad first. P.S.#2- This is an honest comment, not a fact, I am just trying to let others know some unmentioned parts to the game that may hesitate the buying a game that can cause alot of irritation in kids who want an game that is horse related ( not a hard reqest ) and a perfect game ( impossible).
Fun!

Even though the description says it is not meant to work with laptops or integrated sound/video, it happens to work fine on my year old HP laptop. Not perfect, but pretty fun and nice to look at.
