Pretty decent RTS/RPG but the camera controll has alot to be desired....

Iv'e just started playing this one and i have to admit,it's a fun title. I'm a (NEWBEE) when it come to the RTS genre, so bare with me on this one. The game is advertised as having a blend of both (RPG and RTS) which is what attracted my attention so i decided to give it a try (even though I've never tried an RTS before). Iv'e played ( and own) quite a few games that deal with strategy elements but not as deep into the micro-management side, so when i started this one i knew there it would take a little reading and patience to get started. Well i have to say, the "Prolouge" level was very self-explanitory and it walks you through everything from (mouse commands to keyboard stokes), it's done very well. Anyone new to these type of games will have no problem getting through the prolouge because the narrarator waits for you to perform the commands and if you make a mistake, you cannot progress to the next step until you get it right, plus the orders(or the steps you are to perform)are written out in a little pop-up box in the lower right-hand side of the screen...how cool is that? But even with it's easy to follow narrative, i immediately noticed a HUGE flaw in this title....THE CAMERA CONTROL. Although you do have the option to switch the camera from Isometric to a 3rd-person perspective,it still seem a little clunky in it's reaction-time and you'll find yourself getting a little *DIZZY* when doing so. If you suffer from VERTIGO,you may want to play this in the top-down (isometric view) only. Human generated NPC's i.e (workers'clerics, bowmen ect.)are fun to create and watch. Combat is strategic without being OVERLY COMPLICATED and the voice acting is done well. Not perfect, but well. Overall, for my first RTS,this ones not half bad. I also ordered other RTS titles the same day i got this one ( Heroes 4 and Art of Magic) just to get my feet wet in the world of RTS games. Im usually strictly an RPG player, but it's fun to try these type of games. So far to me, they are just RPG's w/ more in-dept strategy and that's a good thing. F.Y.I For those of you who are familar with this series...Iv'e read the reviews all across the web about the "PLATINUM" edtition and I'm not even considering it. I'm a 'NEWBEE' to RTS's.NOT AN IDIOT. -Darvius9

System problems incorrect on other reviews.

If you've read the spellforce forums or technical FAQ, you'd know that the most current ATI Catalyst software addresses the all the current known problems. I'm running this with a Radeon 9700 and it works like a charm. The only problem I had with it was before I updated to the newest Catalyst (ATI's video driver package).

Admittedly, I just installed it about two hours ago, but my first impressions are:

1) Long time to install. It took about a half an hour to completely install on my laptop (and it's a fairly new laptop, and has plenty of HD space, ram, etc.).

2) Really counter-intuitive interface. I've played many RPG and RTS games, and this one's interface is just kicking my butt.

3) The tutorial takes FOREVER. It's making me a little worried about moving into the real game; I don't want to get into it, and find out that it's just an impossibly complex game. I bought this to relax with, and I suspect that it's going to take a degree in Computer Science to get into it.

I'm hoping that these are just initial minor bobbles on the road to fun. From the other reviews, that might be the case. I concur with the bad voice acting, and some of the minor details (such as referring to the Menu button as Options during the tutorial) are just that, minor details.

Spellforce has been my most lasting computer game favorite for two long years. I am constantly playing it to learn better tactics, create stronger avatars, and just pure enjoyment! I have found this game to be a rare and lucky find! The graphics are beautiful, even when the graphics setting is set to medium! The music is fantastic, and is well composed to each island. The magic is deep, powerful, and the most fun to work with. I have yet to use every spell the game has, and I believe that I have not even discovered all of the magic possiblities. The warriors are beyond powerful and they just look awesome! I have found the gamplay to be many notches above my other games, creating a problem free atmosphere! Although the game lacks an editor, the possibilities are way beyond limitless! I can't wait to purchase the next two additions! [...] It will take you straight to the mainpage! This game is a MUST MUST MUST MUST HAVE for any game collection!

An excellant game with a couple of glitches.

The other reviews cover the game in detail but I only want to talk about a couple of issues. The text did not always match the speech and I found that an error that should have not happened, as it is amazingly easy to spot. The other issue was, as mentioned in another review, that there is all of these hot items that you can never reach a high enough level to use. I played the game twice in two differing ways and had a couple of different discrepancies. I performed a task and did not get credit for it. Characters did not respond when the tasks had been done. On the other hand I did not perform a task but the only response choice I had was "Aye". The game went on merrily afterwords as if I had. The last main issue is that the payoff was lacking. After all the work it was lame. It could be that it was done on purpose to have you go on to the next game in the series. The next two modules are only available in Amazon UK. I would like to see them here, like, yesterday. The overall gameplay was amazingly good. I played it twice back to back so that is a measure of how much I liked it. It is a good idea to download the game patch as it repairs a few problems.

one of the best rts/rpg combos ever

wow, what can I say. I got spellforce a year ago, played it for a short while, and it took a back seat to the newer games. after a year or so, i am again playing this with renewed vigour.

this is the first rts/rpg which goes into 3d view. wow! the coolest thing ever! i usually build bases in 2d view and fight the enemies in 3d view ( you can use tab to switch enemies). it feels like battles in lord of the rings.

the graphics is excellent, wonderful and 3d view is simply too cool. sure the voice acting and a few commands could have been a bit better, but this is forgiven.

this game was totally ahead of its time and it will run beautifully on current machines. i have finished 4 levels and still not experienced a single crash.

Highly recommended for rpg/rts/tolkein fans.

I find this game to be one of the most frustrating attempts at RTS game play I have ever played. I have played hundreds of hours on other RTS games and never found any game to be as annoying and poorly designed as this one. Not only do the designers intentionally limit your ability to build armies, but if your hero gets killed its start over time. You have to constantly micromanage your entire unit structure, especially the armies. You find your hero always on the short end of the battle since he or she is seldom able to defend himself against even odds. The border scroll function is either too sensitive or to slow to react in a timely manner. The AI is terrible and gives the overwhelming odds of winning to the enemy. I do not like the screen angle, you're practically looking straight down on your charaters. Finding things like upgrades and ways to improve your hero and use of the tech tree are not intuitive. Your armies will not follow orders and attack anything they come across. Over all I would not buy this game if it was on sale for 5 cents. I would not be as generous in my praise as some have been on this game, it lacks real playability for the general masses in my opinion.

Empire building meets RPG

I bought this game recenty and I have to say, I'm addicted. True that the battle system leaves a little to be desired butI personally throroughly enjoy building little hamlets for troops, and wandering around finding lost chests, creatures carrying items and generally enjoying the rpg story line, the main plot is straightforward and engaging, the sidequests are fun and intriguing. over all it's got marvelous graphics, decent voice overs, you have to give kudo's to any game that gives sound to every single sentence the character's speak, excellent character customability, and hours worth of good old fashion goblin bashing. my only gripes with the game is your character is human, no choosing race there, and you have to build towns to get troops. don't get me wrong, i love empire building games, i'm just not used to doing it and an rpg at the same time.it's just..odd. but over all i love the game and forsee many many more hours of fun game play.
