The Best Game in Years...

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

Now, I call this game the best game in years, possibly the most fun game I have ever played. This review may reflect some on the fact that Walter Hill's classic movie "The Warriors" is one of my all-time favorite movies. And the game is no different. I just got it for Christmas, played it only a handful of hours, but already, I know this game is amazing. The gameplay is easy, but not too easy to the point you get bored. The fighing moves are awesome, the game is very bloody, which is cool. I love the characters, and how you learn how they joined the Warriors (in bonus missions). I also was not aware of the fact that some of the voiceovers are from the original cast members, such as Michael Beck's "Swan", James Remar's "Ajax", and a host of others. The scenes are true to the movie, all the gangs are here, all the excitement is here.

Unforunately, I am sitting here at work writing this review, and it made me even more anxious to run home and get a little gameplay in tonight. I heard Queens of the Stone Age did a cover of "In The City" on a re-release of the soundtrack, I would love to hear that.

Anyway, if you are a fan of games like GTA and Manhunt, then this is a game I would check out. Even if you never saw The Warriors movie, you will love this game. Rockstar is, in my opinion, one of the best video game developers of all time.

So be sure to check out The Warriors, the game, the movie, etc...and welcome to the streets of New York, circa 1979!

The Warriors (PS2)

The Warriors, the quintessential Hip-Hop flick with no actual Hip-Hop in it, save for a graffiti tagging character named Rembrandt. When word of its getting the video game treatment initially spread, a mixture of excitement and dread hit most aficionados of the classic B-movie. Thankfully, Rockstar Games spared no detail in bringing the The Warriors (Rockstar; PS2) video game to reality, impressively.

Game play is intuitive, especially for the millions no doubt familiar with past Rockstar titles like the assortment of Grand Theft Auto games. Players can choose to wreak havoc in Rumble Mode or play in the linear Story mode. You can also bop your way throughout the game while alternately playing as any of the Warriors; steady leader Swan, the brash Ajax, the doomed Cleon, etc. Although the game can be easily finished in a week's time, if not less, the ability to replay levels and various side adventures maximize the games replay value.

Besides eventually replaying the events of the original flick, the game provides a nice back story to the origins of the Warriors gang and how they earned their rep on the streets of Coney Island. Late 70's slang is thick with horny gang members freely relaying their desires for some new "wool" or calling those unfortunate to be left in their paths "wimps". Side adventures like crossing out rival gang's burners are another nice touch along with vintage images of NYC when it was truly the Rotten Apple.

With its "M" rating this game isn't for the faint of heart (come on, the film was rated R) since what it lacks in gunplay it makes up for in lead pipes, machetes and baseball bats. After 25 plus years, The Warriors, in all its forms, still holds its rep. Come out and play.

"Can You Dig It?"

Yeah, I can dig it. As many of you know, The Warriors is a game developed by Rockstar Toronto based on the 1979 Cult Film of the same name. The Warriors are mistakenly accused of killing a big time gang leader named Cyrus. Soon they have every gang in the city out to get revenge. The Warriors must make their way from one end of New York to their turf on the other side of the city. That's the story of the movie anyways, cause if you think this game is another movie rehash...you're dead wrong.

The game takes place 90 days before the movie does. It details the events leading up to the big meeting in an entirely new storyline that really melds well with the movie. It's obvious right off the bat that R* has loads of respect for this movie, everything about this games oozes it.

"Be lookin' good, Warriors. All the way back to Coney. You hear me babies? Good. Real Good. Adios"

There is so much to do in this game though. You can play story missions to further the story. Then there is Rumble mode where you can choose any gang in the city and battle any other gang with many different game modes or you can create your own gang. Of course, you can search Coney Island (it's not very big...at all but you don't need loads of space in a game like this. The Warriors don't have much turf anyways) and do side missions and such. You can also work out with a heavy bag, do sit ups, push ups and chin ups. There are also Flashback Missions where you can go back and play and learn everything from how The Warriors started to how each individual member joined.

Alright though, onto the technical parts. First is the graphics. I know they don't look pretty in screenshots. And to be honest, they aren't anything special but they work for some reason. There aren't hi-res textures, some are just plain muddy but as I said, they work for this game, maybe because of the grittinnes of it, I don't know but I like the graphics. That's not to say I wish they were better though, cause I would've liked that but I'm not complaining by any means. The character models are great. You can easily tell which character is which. All are detailed exactly how they should be and are very faithful to what is depicted in the film. The environments are dark but that is intentional cause there is a stealth aspect to this game, it's light but it's there.

The game controls very well. Control is tight and responsive. There are many moves you can do, even on the last chapter I was finding out new moves I could do. You can do head smashes, beat the crap out of someone, smash their skull on the pavement, do combo moves with other Warriors and much much more. There is also a Rage meter which seems dumb at first but later in the game you realize how helpful it is. You can tag...ALOT. It is sometimes challenging, even if it is only a trace the line with your controller" minigame. They get challenging, especially if you have a Warrior who has lame tagging skills. You can tag burners (big banners that have "The Warriors" on it) or a plain red "W" over another gangs tag. There are also "War-Chief" controls that work great. The AI teammates are actually pretty good. They can hold their own, sometimes longer than you can.

The Warriors sounds phenominal. Most of the voice actors reprise their roles. James Remar, Michael Beck, Dorsey Wright, David Harris and Deborah Van Valkenburg are just some that reprise their roles. Of course some actors are not with us anymore and had to be replaced (most notably the DJ and Rembrandt. The actors have since passed on [R.I.P]) but the people they got are almost dead on with their performances. I don't know why they couldn't get Michael Potts (Cyrus) or David Patrick Kelly (Luther) to come back, considering they are still alive (but the vioce actors they did get are spot on in their performances. I honestly couldn't tell if it was the original actors or not until the end credits when I saw they were different). Oh well. The Sound Effects are spot on. Everything sounds great. Bottles, tables, and chairs smashing to the music. Oh the music. I've always enjoyed the movie's soundtrack and its all here...but more of it. "In The City"? It's here. "Last of an Ancient Breed"? Yup. "Nowhere to Run"? Oh yeah. All of it is placed perfectly also.

The Warriors is one of the best games I've played in a while. It takes one of my favorite movies and respectfully translates it to a fun as hell game. Of course, I haven't touched on everything yet, some of it just needs to be played. I may add to this here and there as I think of stuff so check back. So should you "Come Out To Play"? Oh hell yes. Go out and play dammit.

"Warriors make a life of fantasy, on this night, we'll ride the devil's feet, gonna stand our ground on this part of town like the last of an ancient breed, like the last of an ancient breed?"

The Warriors (PS2)

The Warriors for the PS2 & XBOX was released in 2005 which happens to be the 25th anniversary of the original cult classic film which follows a gang as they struggle to return home after being accused of shooting Cryus, the president of the bigest gang in the city.

The game was made by RockStar which means it's gonna be violent, filled with bad language, similiar to Grand Theft Auto (but without guns) and of course not for children.

As for many comparing it to Grand Theft Auto, they have a point. It does play rather similiar though as stated above there are no weapons and no cars either. In this game instead you use one of nine "Warriors" and beat living crap out of someone with your fists of a melee weapon (Baseball bats, bottles.)

And if the games 23 Story missions were not enough, they have also added in Flashback Levels which show and allow you to play levels that explain how the Warriors were formed.

This game is truely a great addition to any serious gamers pile and will have you entertained for days. One of the best things about this game is the fact that for each level you complete you are awarded characters from other gangs to play as in Rumble Mode. There are roughly 200 to unlock.

It's a miracle!

A++ Rockstar has revamped the Warriors

If you saw the 1979 movie of the Warriors, you would love the game. It's better! Rockstar stuck with the storyline also added in stories about the Warriors in how they became the toughest gang in New York. The game play is fun and exciting, for those who have a fighting mind. Gang fighting back when people really fight with fist and sticks and not 9mm or shotgun. The 70s theme from the music (which are real life hits) to the fashion is exploited through out the game.Once you complete the game..took me 14 hours off and on, you still can play the side game in Rumble mode which is always fun especially with 2player mode. It's a good game based on the movie. As for the Mature rating, it is mild more like a T-14 rating. Profanity and fighting,
Tom & Jerry was more violent than this game.

I haven't had this much fun since I first attended an "Angry Cocks" concert to hear the "Rollin' Nuts." This game is worth playing just to hear the origins of the Warriors and to learn more about the gangs. Plus, it's really fun (although I didn't play 2 player very much, but I'm sure that's great too). The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is b/c I thought when the game met up with the movie, it really wasn't as fun any more. In the movie, all the warriors did was run (other than the park scene with the Furies and the bathroom scene with the Punks, which made some great game play). The game tried to stay true to the movie, so all you did was press X a lot and run. Also, some of the stages that follow along with the movie are really dumb, like the Lizzies stage (where all you do is beat down the door and leave). Plus, the intros were really long. Other than that, it was perfect. It's about 95% accurate with the movie. It's a really violent game (mugging, killing, beating, stealing, etc.), so don't buy it for your kids.

Come out and play with the warriors

For the most part, I tend to be skeptical of video game renditions of movies. All too often, the games have been altered to such an extent that they serve no real connection to the film, or the game just plain sucks.

However, The Warriors is an exception to this rule. In plain English, you need to play this game. This game is phenomenal in that it manages to keep itself true to the 1979 Walter Hill cult classic while still being a very fun, top-notch video game. For all you Grand Theft Auto fans...here's GTA: Coney Island '79!

If you've seen the movie, then you pretty much know how the game itself will end. But...you will not know how the game BEGINS! Only five missions in this game are directly from the movie. The first 10 or so missions are leading up to Cyrus's big meeting in the Bronx. In addition, as you play you can unlock flashback missions which detail the player as to how Cleon, Ajax, Swan, Snow and company became affiliated with the bad boys from Coney. Playing the game is almost like watching a prequel to the movie.

If you are a die-hard fan of the movie, stop reading this review and just buy the damn game already! All the gangs from the film are here, including the Rogues, Riffs, Baseball Furies and Lizzies. The movie's soundtrack is also featured throughout the gameplay as well...as are quotes from the movie itself.

The A.I. is among the best I have ever seen in a game. We have tons of explosive all-out gang brawls with 10 or more people going at it, with weapons galore. The gameplay does not glitch or slow down, so sit back, and enjoy gang rumbles the way the used to be during the days of Jimmy Carter.

Rockstar is clearly the best game publisher when it comes to the action genre. This game follows the same basic layout as the Grand Theft Auto series in that you are free to explore a 3-D environment (albeit with much more restrictions than in a GTA game).

Oh yeah, once you finish all 23 missions, a most unique bonus feature awaits you...

When I originally heard there would be a game based on the Warriors movie, I was skeptical. When I heard Rock Star was doing it, I was optimistic. When I got the game, I wasn't dissapointed at all.

Rock Star, with their penchant for aggressive games stemming from the Grand Theft Auto series, is the perfect fit as the developer.

The Warriors game delivers exactly what one would hope. Lots of violence, but none of it just laid out randomely (of course, that's not stopping the player the from just going out and starting something). The story mode is fun, with well laid out plots and missions. And while on the mission, you can easily let yourself get sidetracked by exploring the area or a random mugging to fill your pockets without hurting your mission objectives at all. It is this semi-lax structure that add a whole lot to the game.

In between story mode missions, you can go out onto your own turf and do whatever you please, including some shorter missions. A Rumble mode allows you to either fight one on one, or one gang against another in a random match.

The game itself is much like the GTA series. Wide open areas are predominant, so you won't feel like your closed in all the time. It also has been made the same way: a large focus has gone into the missions, gameplay, area and small details while graphics are a secondary concern. Don't expect anything like Soul Calibur 3 or Final Fantasy X graphics wise.

The controls are simple, and there are no large amount of combinations to perform. You can get done what you want using only a few buttons. While this hurts the depth of fighting techniques (which is much better than San Andreas for the record), it also means you won't get nearly as many mistakes as in other games.

Unfortunately, there is only an autosave feature everytime you complete a mission or return to your hideout. However, one great addition is that at any point during the game, you can switch between one and two players.

There are some glitches here and there, but nothing that detracts from the game in any significant manner. The most beefs one will have will be with the camera angles, especially with two players.

The game is very true to the movie, storyline and characters. And many of the orignal characters from the movie have lent their voices for the game, making it even better. And those voices that are fill ins for the orignal actors are very true to the originals. While not a great game, it is very good and long lasting, and if you're up for some naked aggression, I would definitely go for the Warriors.
