Possibly the best game I have ever played

I have been playing WWIIOL since its release day over a year ago. I am an avid gamer who plays a multitude of FPS shooters, flight sims, and space sims. Since I got WWIIOL I have bought several games (Medal of Honor, Warbirds III, Jedi Outcast, etc) None of them are on my harddrive anymore, WWIIOL is.

The sheer scope if this game is phenominal. It is a first person shooter that is also a flight simulatopr, and a tank simulator. They have one class of ship in now, and are planning on adding many more ships in the future. that is another great thing about WWIIOL. The designers are awlays adding new things to it and improving it!

Unlike so many other games WWIIOL has modelled the entire WORLD in 1/3 scale. At the moment they only have buildings and such in France, Belgium, and some parts of England, Germany and Holland. But what other game gives you that big of a map???

I look forward to playing this game for many years to come!

Excellent, absolutely astounding

This game has a steep learning curve, and also steep system requirements, but the game is by far and wide THE funnest game out there in my opinion. Thousands of players controlled by their side's respective high commands (I am a proud member of Oberkommando Der Wermacht in the game), slugging it out tank on tank, plane on plane, ship on ship. Many historically accurate weapons modeled already and more every patch.

With 1.90, we have gotten:Depot spawning representing reinforcements moving up the line, Strategic bombing which ACTUALLY effects what can be researched by the high commands and how much gets produced, new tanks and planes, and in 1.9x series, we get:
Zerstorer 1934A (German destroyer)
Javelin (J) Class Destroyer (British Destroyer)
Le Hardi Class Destroyer (French Destroyer)
Sdfkz 251 APC (German Halftrack)
Laffly with mounted 4.7cm Anti Tank Gun
Stewart (M3) lend lease purchasable to the French
and more!

I am, like many others, an extreme WWIIOL fanboy. I have been playing the game since 1.10, where we had endless tank swarms storming across the Belgian countryside, up until present, when we have organized infantry battles, naval sorties, strategic bombing, air support, and more. And with "Brigade Spawning", the High Commands will actually get to deploy Kampfgruppes and Brigades, Divisions, Korps/Corps, Armies, and even Army groups over the massivee 1/2 scale European map, which currently models in detail Northern France, Western Germany, Southern Britain, Belgium, and Southern Holland, including much of the Zeeland Islands where pure tankless battles take place between determined marines. The map expands almost every patch, oftentimes by leaps and bounds, and giving us more territory to conquer and fight over. Yes, there are occasional expeditions by determined gamers to the Alps, Norway, and Scotland, I have been on a few myself.

We have the most dedicated group of game devs in the world as far as I'm concerned as well, all of whom are active in the community, posting in the forums, and playing their game, truely it is a labor of love for them.

If you're a casual gamer and just want to drive a tank and blow [stuff]up, this is the game for you. If your a dedicated flight simmer who wants to escort bombers that actually affect the ground war and war at large, this is the game for you. If your a hardcore strategy enthusiast and history buff who aspires to lead an online army of fanatical troops marching through the streets of Paris, London, or Berlin, this is the game for you. If you are easily addicted to things, I must warn you:the game is regularly called "online crack", and for good reason ;). Accurate damage models (no hitpoints, actual damage and penetration data), large explosions, drunk people driving Opel troop transports at 80mph down a road with 15 people in the back, and more! Heck, come play for a month and become a flyboy.

PS:You actually don't need too great a gaming rig if you want "just decent" FPS, the hardcore guys will buy new computers practically just for this game.
I started out with:
Compaq with 750mhz AMD Duron
64mb of PC133 SDRAM
8mb Graphics Card

and upgraded to:
Compaq with 750mhz AMD Duron
704mb/640mb PC133 SDRAM
64MB GeForce 4 MX420

Decent frame rates though I had some issues, now I have:

AMD Athlon XP2800+ Barton (2.08GHZ)
128mb GeForce 4 Ti4200
512mb PC2700 DDR (Corsair)
Asus A7n8X Deluve Motherboard
homebuilt with lots of goodies plus monitor for about 900 bucks =)

If you want to play WWIIOL, Recommend the following:
1GHZ+ CPU
512mb+ RAM
Good Motherboard
Broadband internet (though 56k does still work, just not as good packet traffic)

!S and hope to cya at the front ;)

I have tons of PC games. I get new ones every so often. I have only two games left that I ever play. One is Master of Orion 2, and I only play that if I'm in a position that I can't reach my joystick and kill some baddies in the masterful creation that is World War II Online. Cornered Rat Software is small, but they are the most dedicated people in the software business. The current version of the game, 1.8, is mind blowing when compared to when I first started playing about a year ago. The graphics have been completely changed, the netcode is much improved, the number of vehicles has at least doubled, and the best part of all, is the outstanding community of players. They love their game and the game somehow loves the community back, because the devolpers listen to us. When developers listen, and change your playing experience, or fix a mistake because you brought it to their attention...there is nothing better than that. I pay my money every month because there is no other game developer on the planet that deserves it more. I tried Battlefield 1942 and it made me want to literally cry because of the way EA warped my vision of a world at war. If you are a war simulation player, and want to really get involved in a game, buy this one. You'll be happily eating ramen noodles every day so you can upgrade your hardware, just to make the nose on that German soldier a little clearer.

Best game I've ever played

When it came out this game was bad. But now ... it's by far the best game I've ever played. The developement staff works VERY hard to improve and the game changes so much so often that even if you don't like it for a period it usually changes so you will. The part that makes this game so good: Teamwork. In no game have I ever seen the amount of teamwork present in WW2OL. I've played a LOT of games too and none of them even compare. It is the STANDARD for teamwork in the future and while games don't want to say it, they are building off of it. For $20 it is DEFINATELY worth buying it if you like world war 2, flying sims, FPS, or tank sims. If you just want to experience the best teamwork available online now, you MUST get this game.

Once you get the game, you should immediately join STURMGRENADIER if you play axis or BKB if you play allied. They are the games premiere squads and they are what makes the game worth playing with their teamwork...My game name is "dukeacem" and I hope to see you in there!

As terrifying as real war

This game is stunning, Screaming divebombing Luftwaffe planes strafeing convoys, terrific artillery barrages, dozens of bombers carpet bombing entire cities, stunning panzer vrs. tank battles, bloody infantry battles where wits and tactics are the hero of the day, become a high ranking general and plan massive operations agaist the enemy front line or stick out as a grunt fighting for country and people.

This game is worth every penny.

Amazing game!!!

The game is very fun. There is a slight learning curve but once you get over it, it is simply amazing. You can play infantry, tank, sea, or plane. The graphics are getting better with each patch, and so is game play. What really puts it over other MMOs is there is much less of a time commitment and CRS really keeps in touch with their more mature playerbase.

I have played all the games out there, and there is no other game like world war 2 online. This is not your average first person shooter, as you can play as a soldier, tank, boat, or aircraft. And instead of just trying to beat levels, you and thousands of others from around the world are trying to "Move the map" in an attrempt to win the war, and rewrite history.

you cant go wrong at this price either--dont waste your money on other FPS games, wwiiol is the best out there, just try it for a month and you will see why!

Plain Disappointing

I can not share the enthusiasm of my fellow reviewers. In my mind, this game is just plain disappointing in all aspects.

First of all, the game doesn't even come with a manual, keeping you guessing. For the most parts, regular FPS-style key controls are used, but for many things, there are custom keys. And besides: Not providing a manual with a game is just plain unacceptible.

But the main problem I have with this game is not the fact that the download mechanism is pathetic or that the lag time seems to be extreme. The main problem I have is that it just ain't fun.

I have never seen a game that leaves you in the dark about what to do as often as this game. This already starts out with how to get into the game. Instead of starting the game, a web page is opened. That web page then has a million links, a few of which will get you into the game. Once you started the game, you are left in the dark about how to get into a mission. Once you figure that out, you have no clue about how to start a mission. Then you realize that in order to get a gun, you need to equip a *vehicle*.

Once you are finally in a mission, you are in the middle of some area, and no one else is there, because they are all off to wherever the battle is. And at that point, you are on your own. More than once did I spend 15 minutes just to get to the battle, and as soon as I got there, I got killed instantly. Argh! While this may be realistic, it does not entertain me.

The graphics of this game are pathetic to say the least. Trees for instance are 2 dimensional, meaning they are paper thin. There are few textures and the objects are very simplistic. Nothing nice to see here. Some gaming magazines said (about a year ago), that the "graphics get the job done but aren't pretty". Well, that may have been then. I just plain expect more, even a year or more ago.

And what makes matters worse is that rendering engine is dog slow. No I have to admit that I do NOT have a state of the art game machine (mine WAS state of the art about a year ago), but if I can run Grand Theft Auto, Dungeon Siege, and Medal of Honor without a problem, then I would expect I can run this OK in low-res mode.

Don't waste your money. Get Battlefield 1942 instead. Yes, it may be a different setting with not as many players, but still.

In my opinion....

The game has come along ways from where its tragic beginning was, you have to remember this game has a huge patch that comes along with the disc and having a dial up will be no fun. Its best to get a friend to DL the patch or buy the patch disc for this one. At three dollars for the game thats an excellent price for the KEY number to start the game on-line. This game is no an offline game!

The patching for this game is slow compared to larger companies and they come with there problems also. All in All what the C.Rats are trying to accomplish is exactly what the gaming community wants in a WAR game. The Realism (not the graphics) but the action of the game is right there. This game isn't really intended for someone under 12 and yet they have to have allot of majority to play with some of the older community which relies heavy on team play to win. There is little or no support if the game doesn't work for you or on your computer which will need the current fastest running vid card and processor along with ram. The game is not finished and may never be there is currently one theater and they have been stuck in 1941 for the last two years as to the vehicle set. It can be addictive but frustrating at times just as much.
