Certain Warnings to heed

This is a great game, however, if you are someone unlucky (like a lot of us), you might encounter a range of problems. Only after a day of its offical North America release, I visited the Bioware Self-help fourm and there was TONs of little (and major) problems people have encountered.

For example, lots of people ran their game CD on a RW drive and encountered start-up stalls which is because of the security measures on the CDis interfereing with data transfer. Or "pointer errors" with the launcher (fortunately Bioware posted things about that). Also, I have obsvered that majority of these problems are NEW, you might have your old NWN working one day and as soon as your install SoU it stops working, which is intensely frustrating. Plus, you need a rather new vid card that's not from a outdated company to full take advantage of the expension, which require better system specs than NWN itself. This might not make so much a difference to people with good computers but for those with low or middle ends (like mine), might need to *upgrade*.

The biggest problem you will encounter will have to do with your video card. Many people have top of the line video cards stilled countered problem from "stuttering" to square leaves to not being able to play at all. Be perpared to navaigate through video driver sites or worse yet going out to buy yourself another video card just so you can play the game you paid 30 dollars for.

Well, enough peismism, just hope you are one of the lucky ones. I gave the rating as a 3 (netural) because I do not know how the gaming experience will turn out (mine is being shipped), but do not have your hopes up too high and be perpared for frustration! (not what you paid for eh?)

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Underntide

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 5

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide adds a little of everything. There is the addition of Prestige Classes that allow your character to specialize in more unique areas. Again, there are new feats that allow a character to more in a very specific or very general direction. Additionally, new skills and spells were added as well (although the skills were focuses primarily on rogues and many will argue that mage classes are still "inferior" to other classes).

Shadows of Undrentide also adds a new set of official modules with the expansion. The plotline is interesting and the game makes use of new tile sets, but ultimately it is quite short and not as challenging as would be expected after finishing the official quest that came with the original Neverwinter Nights.

Shadows of Underntide has maintained the playability of the game while adding the new content. Whether you play single or multiplayer, the new modules and rule set integrates nicely into the game.

If I were to say that Shadows of Underntide has one problem, it would be that it did not add as much content relative to the price of the expansion and that of the original game (or the next expansion in the series). Because all the material that was added was so specific for a single play style, many players will most likely never experience even all the Shadows has to offer.

For players that desire to play the latest play/fan-base mods or just really have enjoyed NWN, Shadows of Underntide is an average expansion for a great game.

Great Expansion!

The Shadows of Undrentide is the first expansion for Neverwinter Nights. It adds new spells, monsters, tile sets, prestige classes, and skills and feats, all of which enrich the Neverwinter Nights experience. The campaign that comes with this expansion is by far much better than the original Neverwinter Nights. The story has nothing to do with the one in the first game, other than a brief mention of what is going on in Neverwinter. It is still interesting none the less. You have much more flexibility with your character this time around so you can play as good, evil, lawful, or chaotic as you want. You also have more choices on how to handle things. Your character choice also can have more influence on the game, such as Druids and Rangers can actually communicate with animals. This is my favorite expansion. I find the story to be very enjoyable and fun.

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide Expansion

A rather disappointing, but expected, letdown from the same licensing company who bought out TSR and turned Dungeons & Dragons into a marketing scheme akin to it's collectable card games (Wizards of the Coast). They're the originators and owners of the Magic: The Gathering collectable card game. Those who know this game and know WOTC can attest... WOTC Slogan: Gotta collect the whole set! And, producing numerous sparse expansions with minimal inticing features is WOTC's meat and potatoes.

So here's the skinny... yes, Shadows of Urdrentide expands on the successful Neverwinter Nights, though NWN is, itself, not exactly 'true' to the actually table top game. It has been adapted for multiplayer on-line use. Neverwinter Nights also left a lot open for future development. And, that's how WOTC wants it to be. Grant it, D&D table-top is hugely expanded now due to open-licensing, so the entire D&D system could never be addressed in one mere boxed set for computer play. But, that is the sales scheme.

The Urdrentide expansion does precisely what I and several others expected WOTC would allow and desire. It adds a minimum of rather unimpressive new spells, feats, prestige classes, areas, and creatures... making future expansions inevitable for those junkies hooked on the game. Buy Urdrentide if you're a NWN junkie like my friend Mark. It's like electronic crack to him. But, If you have willpower and insight, think about waiting until the price drops to bargain levels.

The downside of 'not' buying it now... if you're an on-line player, you may lose access to rooms/modules with Urdrentide installed. This could prove to be very annoying to those who haven't purchased the Urdrentide expansion. And, it 'will' happen... trust me.

Just so you understand, I'm not downing on Neverwinter Nights. I enjoy the game, as do many of us. I'm simply citing that one should not expect a great deal for your $29.95 in this expansion. Even for those Builders creating modules with the NWN Toolset, the sparse and unimpressive new tilesets and other add-ons make Urdrentide only mildly appealing... perhaps only $14.95 appealing.

This was better than the original campaign

After completing the official campaign from NWN (hereafter, OC), I was left wanting something more. I was disappointed with the OC in that it was a little too easy -- there were too many opportunities to run back to the temple and stock up, even in the middle of combat situation. As a result, the OC was very unbalanced, although the storyline was good.

Shadows of Undrentide (SoU) is *not* a continuation to the OC, but rather is a parallel storyline, taking place at roughly the same time. Completely new characters, completely new setting, completely different storyline (although, roughly the same premise).

This expansion pack does not have some of the same flaws as the OC. The game is more balanced, with no teleports in combat situations and limited teleports overall. The puzzles are harder, and the rewards for completing quests are not unbalancing either. Further, SoU adds a few new abilities and character classes, as well as new creatures, that would have been welcome in the OC. This is more along the lines of what the OC *should* have been.

SoU is shorter than the OC, and for some that's disappointing. It's also a lot harder and takes more time to wade through, which makes it equal out to about the same amount of investment in time. It takes a good little while to work through the puzzles and side quests, which add positively to the game.

One negative -- the game's ending is very anticlimatic. Once you finish the final battle, you are led to a cut scene with a vague ending that is resonant of the "...to be continued..." cliche at the end of a bad movie. In spite of a great game and a wonderful final encounter, the player gets a disappointing epilogue, resulting in "Bummer, what a letdown" instead of "Wow, that was great!"

In spite of the ending, I still max the rating for this expansion pack. Had the OC been more on the difficulty level as SoU, the OC would have been great. SoU takes a good game, builds on it and makes it better.

Too short

Neverwinter Nights is a great game, and I really enjoyed playing this expansion pack, but the game is way too short! It probably only took me 15-20 hours playing time. It's got a Chap1, Interlude, and Chap2. Chap2 is very very short and the end enemy was cake. The new specialized classes are cool, but just as you get to a high enough level to train in one, you're about done with the game! You might want to wait for the price to drop on this one before purchasing.

Supports the Linux Version of NWN also!

Have not received my copy of SoU yet. But I think it's important to add to the product description that NWN and NWN:Shadow of Undrentide runs in Linux. For the base NWN game, you purchase the Windows version - then visit the website for the Linux binaries. This expansion pack includes Linux install scripts. Visit the NWN website for more info!
Thank you Bioware for supporting Linux!

So Disappointed

I can't believe I'm saying this about a Bioware game, but this expansion has got to be the "cheapest" (short, they say 20 hours long, but I completed the whole thing in less than 10 hours), most boring, most expensive $$ expansion they have ever released. I own practically every Bioware game ever made, and have loved every one of them... except for this one. I have downloaded and played mods that other players have created that were more exciting and more thoughtfully created that SoU. In my opinion, Bioware was in a hurry on this one, and let greed get in the way of creativity. All I can hope is that the next expansion is exciting, REPLAYABLE, LONGER!!!, and an all around better continuation of the NWN's story. If not, I will begin to wonder whether to spend any more money on Bioware creations.

Better but not great

This expansion pack fixes a lot of things, but this game is still not on par with Baldur's Gate II. The game is still too linear, and you still have henchmen you can't give anything to (other than a potion which they will drink on the spot). I found this expansion pack was worth about 5 days of game play before I got bored and stopped playing it. Better that the orginal which didn't last 2 hours.

It's hard to believe the people who made BG and BGII, some of the best selling games ever, didn't build on what those games great: party role-playing. What we want is Baldur's Gate with better graphics. That's it. The game mechanics were almost perfect, the multi-threaded stories where fun, and the party building was great.

So no NWN SoU is not an equal to BGII, but with this expansion pack, it's worth a few days of your life.

Falls a bit short

Overall this is a good game but..lets face it if your a fan of the D&D system it falls short in far too many ways. Lack of attention to detail and lack of variety is the problem here-missing many crucial spells, lack of variety in the tilesets, the player pictures are horridly un-archetypical, cant even put a cloak on your character, bizzare NPC choices. I dont understand why its taking Bioware/Atari so long to really take what they have done with NWN and turbo charge it a bit with more variety and such. Of course I look forward to any new installments they might have but this game leaves me with the feeling that someone who never really loved the original game is in charge of its progress....
