Ultimate Strategy Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 5

If you enjoy strategy games, or just wish to have fun without mindless killing, Starcraft is the game for you. All players, good or bad, can have fun playing this game, whether they're battling human/computer forces or racing their units around a racetrack; the gaming options are endless. Starcraft's three races are balanced almost perfectly in power (assuming they are played to their full potential). I would even reccomend playing Starcraft over its expansion. Starcraft is definitely worth the money at the current $10. I have played this game since it came out, and I am eagerly awaiting Starcraft 2.

Starcraft is often considered as the best statergy game of all time. Its about 3 races, the rebellious human Terrans, swarming aliens zerg and the all mysterious powerful Protoss. Fight for survival in major galatic battles against each other for supreme dominace. Command your Gunned Up Robot Walking Golieths, Massive Starship Carriers or Battle Cruisers, your swarms of Alien Zerglings or even blast a nuclear strike against your opponent to blow him into oblivion.

The storyline of the game is set in the future. Its about the Terran Confederacy Army fighting for survival against the Protoss forces. But something strange is happening...sittings of another alien like speices are becoming quite frequent. Another race emerges, the swarming alien race known as the zerg. The zerg are massing in swarms, and devouring anything in their path. Now the race is on to be dominant species, the protoss have the technology, the terran have the fire power and the zerg have the numbers. Who will win?

Finished the single player Campaign? No worrys, as one major feature of this game is its online capabilities. Enter a whole new world of Starcraft playing online agaisnt oppenents worldwild!

Starcraft is a must for any stratergy gamer. I rate this game 10/10 and give it two thumbs up!!!

I personal find Starcraft to be one of the best games of all time. From the nomadic Terrans,to the honourable Protoss, to the savage Zerg. Starcraft is one of the best games I've ever played in my life! At first I dominated with the Terrans, cloaked ghost+ nukes= fun, fun fun! But now I can't decide which I prefer, 32 dragoons (fully upgraded), or 32 mutalisk (also fully upgraded). But now I just go from one to the other. In conclusion, I find that Starcraft(non and Broodwar) are exellent pass times and is a gift from Blizzard to cheris for a lifetime.

The high point of real-time strategy gaming

Real-time strategy games from Blizzard have always been the benchmark in the genre, and it was perhaps with Starcraft that the company's name became definitively established. Even after seven years, Starcraft is still for many THE RTS, and for me too. Competitors in the business, most notably the Command and Conquer Red Alert franchise, have their own distinctive qualities, but they never approach the idea of `pure gameplay' that hangs around the titles of Blizzard. And for me, Starcraft has this most of all. I just loved the game from the first minute and have never really tired of it.

What is it that makes Starcraft that good? The sublime atmosphere, first of all. The storyline of the missions is so good that it should have been brought out as a book! The story is about three races: the Terran (human), Zerg (insects) and Protoss (developed aliens) who come to conflict in the outer universe. It gives you the idea you aren't just playing for fun: instead you are part of that great science fiction story yourself. The Terrans face internal conflicts and meet their alien neighbours in the meantime; the Zerg fight for total dominance over the Protoss, and in the Protoss campaign you have to resist the Zerg invasions and finally get back to liberty. The missions get more difficult as the story goes on, and probably ten times more challenging than the average Red Alert mission. Yet it never gets to an insane level. At any rate, finishing the campaigns gives a very satisfied feeling.

But the three races aren't just a case of the same units with different colours and different names. In fact, the Terran, Zerg and Protoss don't even hint at each other. Even the construction of buildings and the training of units are very different! So, each time you take on a different species, it looks like you enter a completely new game. With so many differences between the sides, it is very difficult to achieve a good balance in the game. But here, the makers have achieved it. The Terrans are probably the easiest for starters: they use solid units that aren't too expensive and are easy to employ in combat. They also have the possession of a nuke. The Zerg are an insect race with a lot of weird bug-like units. These bugs are cheap, but often vulnerable and are best used in mass attacks. Finally, there are the mysterious Protoss, probably the most difficult of the three. This is a high-tech alien race that possesses very advanced, but also rather slow and expensive forces. It takes some patience to know how to resist a Zerg assault on your Protoss base therefore, but it is possible, and generally there isn't one better side. It's up to your tastes what to prefer.

Units from all sides have lots of special possibilities but you'd better figure them out yourself. One important thing to remember in this game is: never underestimate the enemy. It's often surprising to see how quickly your army can be beaten by a few nasty tricks from the other side. In the more challenging games, it's important to use very well balanced armies to make a chance against the AI or a human opponent.

The graphics are fine: they are of course from 1997 and two-dimensional but I actually don't have the least problem with that. Units, buildings and maps are all beautifully designed with lots of fantastic colours, and the entire picture gives a very credible image of the Starcraft world. The only problem I have is that the resolution is rather restricted: the maximum is 640X480. As a result there's sometimes a lack of overview over the battlefield. But it never becomes really problematic. My only other complaint is that most units are rather large, compared to the map: sometimes this leads to chaotic situations. For example, when you send 15 tanks to a plateau, there's often not enough space and some tanks will start looking for alternative ways (and fall in the hands of the enemy).

Anyway, this is a great game and possibly the best RTS ever released. Even with these old graphics! Of course I hope Blizzard will once release Starcraft 2: imagine, huge hordes of 3-D Zergs running over the plains, while gigantic Protoss robots are trying to stop them... But until then, this is all you need!

Wonderfully balanced, recommended for everyone

I wasn't really into strategy games until my brother got me this game. It is a really balanced game with lots of different units. And, the single-player has a great story with lots of depth. I don't do multi-player, but even so it's a really great game. The only drawback to the game is that as computer technology advances the more you wish it had more of a 3D component to it. But even so, you won't find a more balanced strategy game... ever. For more detailed information you might want to go to the publisher's website. It has a really great online strategy guide.

Man, this games blows. I played it for a 10 minutes and that's all I could take. I never would've bought this thing if I had known it was a strategy game. Talk about some really boring crap.

The grankids ages- 10- 12 absolutely love this game. They spend hours playing and then talk on the phone to their friends about what level and stage of the game they are. Would reccommend this to people who are interested in this type of fun.

THIS IS WHY LIMITED INSTALLATIONS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA!

Over the last 10 years that I first installed STARCRAFT I have replayed it countless of times. Every time a new overhyped game disappoints me, this is one of the games I pull out of my library to be reminded what a GREAT PC GAME LOOKS & PLAYS LIKE! (others include UNREAL, BALDUR's GATE, GRIM FANTANGO and SHOGUN:TOTAL WAR)

Everyone has his/her favorite RTS and no one can claim that STARCRAFT introduced the futuristic RTS genre (that would be DUNE). Nevertheless, the great, crisp and clear graphics, the balanced units and the strategic terrain all contributed into turning STARCRAFT into a true classic. This is a game that passed the test of time, not only because its aging graphics are still acceptable but also because it is one of those games that stays with you. Forever.

So, the next time some gaming industry MBA (who probably could not tell an RTS from an cRPG) tables the idea of LIMITED INSTALLATIONS, what he will have primarily accomplished is to have his game forgotten within a year.
