This is the stupidest game I ever saw for sale- my kids laughed at how poorly the graphics and story were. What a complete waste.
Takes the intimidation out of learning chess for young and old.

Chess, the game of kings. So many pieces with different ways of moving. So much history with thousands of known tournaments, great names, and tactics.
Lets face it, to someone new to chess, this can be an intimidating game.
This software uses a subtle and humorous, often tongue-in-cheek, approach to teaching kids how to play chess. No, this isn't the greatest graphics you will see on a computer, but it is entertaining while teaching you or your kids how to play chess.
Understand, this is for beginners. If you are a chess devotee at any level, this may be charming to downright obnoxious all depending on your outlook.
If you want to take a light and fun approach to learning chess this is a great adventure.
There are gentle lessons for how each piece moves.
Learning how a bishop moves includes smashing toilets (without being offensive or crass). The smashing noise is so perfect that it is one of my kids favorite activities.
The queen lesson is hokey as are a few others.
The knight and pawn lessons appear simple, but it takes a few tries to "get it".
The software could use better instructions, but keep the sound on and move your cursor around the screen and you will figure it out. Always watch the cursor and try the right side of the screen when you think the scene should be moving forward.
Basic strategies are also taught and you get to play various opponents who range from easy to moderately difficult to beat. A good way to build confidence by beating some opponents early with what you have learned, but then being challenged by better opponents later.
All in all, this is the best beginning software for kids (and light hearted grown-ups) to get started with the game.
Far exceeds my expectations!

My son and step son (7&8 yr olds) will play this game for hours if I let them! They go from the computer game to the 'real' set to identify moves and strategies together. I'm amazed at how patient they each are even through the instructive sections. I love that they're learning chess and want to play chess, and this game provides a fun, motivating source for them to do so. I'm not a big computer/video game fan, so am tickled pink that this is getting them off the computer and to the chess board.

I got this for my son (6) for Christmas. So far, he loves it. He has played it probably about 2-3 hours a day for three days straight. I have watched him a few times, and "helped" him when he needed it. It seems like a really great product for beginners. Instead of just telling how a peice moves, this program creates whole games involving the peice and how it moves. Then you get to put your new knowledge to the test by using that peice to put the king in checkmate, through different scenarios the game will devise. I haven't looked at every little detail about this software, but I know it keeps my son's attention, and he is actually learning how to play the game. From what I've seen, this is a quality game that actually is teaching my son how to play chess in a manner that keeps him learning in front of the computer for hours.
I understand that they have a second version of this software that takes up where this one leaves off. Sounds like a must have for us.Learn to Play Chess with Fritz and Chesster 2: Chess in the Black Castle
I also got my son No Stress Chess. Haven't got a chance to play that yet, but I thought it would be a good companion to this software.
Great learning tool

We've had this software for about 4 years. Both our sons have learned to play chess from this program. The simple steps are great rather than throwing all the rules at them at once.

I would recommend this product for older kids. Not for introducing to younger kids. I find the Dinasour CHess very good for beginners. My 4 year old son really grasped the basic concepts of Chess very well by playing Dinasour chess

This is a poorly working program with no instructions or intuitive flow. It would not allow me to bypass its practice regimes which offered no explanations and so were useless and frustrating. It would not allow me to play chess in any mode without graduating from its pre-requisites.After an hour of frustration my five year old asked if we could just go back to the original "board game". I threw the program in the garbage.
My 7-year-old son really enjoys it!

I recently bought this for my son's seventh birthday. He has tried it out, and he enjoys it. I am pleased with the purchase.
