I played the original Warcraft years ago, and had not played RTS games since. After the release of Warcraft III, I found Warcraft 2 Battle Chest at a great discount price, and purchased it on a whim.
And I've been addicted since. It is a great improvement on and expansion to the original game. Graphics, scenarios, sound, and everything is greatly improved. At the same time the folks as Blizzard have managed to also keep the game simple in the sense that it is easy to learn and use, yet always challenging.
Some of the scenarious are very tricky and challenging.
I've rate it a 4 only because the scenarios sometimes feel a little too scripted. I can play one scenario a few times, learn it, and then play to beat it too easily. Newer RTS games are more random, including much of the newer Blizzard software.
Even though WarCraft III is available, I recommend this as a stepping stone woth taking. A great game.
A good value for the bucks

Let's face it... WarCraft isn't StarCraft. Think of it as StarCraft's successful, retired grandpa. The graphics aren't nearly as detailed and the gameplay isn't quite as challenging or in depth as it's successor, but for the price, WarCraft is a nice pickup, especially for those who aren't familiar with the series. The new package includes the Tides of Darkness and the Beyond the Dark Portal single-player missions, as well as access to Blizzard's sweet multiplayer website.
Great game, but avoid BattleNet

I have been playing Warcraft II for many, many years, and absolutely love it. I finally decided to pick up the BattleNet addition of the game so I could play online against people from around the world. What a terrible mistake that was...
Unfortunately, BattleNet is nothing more than a haven for depraved, foul mouthed adolescents hell bend on making your online experience as miserable as possible. The unrelenting flood of obscenities, personal attacks, and graphic content, makes the game completely inappropriate for younger players, and intolerable for older ones. You don't even have to be playing a game to be accosted, it starts immediately in the main page chat window, as soon as you connect to the service.
This really is a shame, because this is such a great game, and a relatively small group of people have completely ruined it for everyone. There seem to be far fewer troublemakers on the games that charge a monthly fee, so hopefully Blizzard's new venture into online gaming, coming soon, I hope, will be better.
Despite being a great game, I cannot recommend this version....
A great hit from Blizzard!

This my favourite (and only) videogame.I love a lot this game which blends in a great way warfare,Tolkien (which i adore)and empire-making and preserving.A great addiction is the map-editor which permits to you to create your personal scenarios .And most of all this is a game of reasoning, you always have to develop very good and forward-looking strategies to achieve final victory. The graphics are good enough.Very good game!
A little speed, a lot of lag.

I have been a fan of warcraft for quite some time now, and it only seemed fitting to by the latest version. If you seek to buy this game for it's multiplayer options, please reconsider! While playing on battle net one will encounter a fair amount of lag, and to be honest, a large amount of lag! The multiplayer options however on IPX are rather improved.
There have been a few new add-ons as well. The game speed can be adjusted to a fast paced FRENZY, and there has been a new backgorund. We are all famaliar with the forest, wasteland, and snow.... but blizzard is now offering the ORC WASTELAND. The orc wasteland is rather disgusting though... Trees have been replaced by rather large mushrooms and the goldmines look like "mud globs". There are no further add-ons, sorry guys.
Now, this game is a must! I may be a bit of a disapointment however. I was expecting a bit more, but I am still impressed. Buy this game only, and only if you love warcraft and you're looking for a fast paced game.
Thank you.

What a great game! Warcraft provides some of the most challenging, versitile multiplayer strategy I've ever seen. With Battle.net play it's only going to get better. Warning, this game is highly addictive and incredibly fun!
A Classic if there ever was one.

Warcraft has totally stood the test of time. The first good quality real-time strategy game out there in a fantasy setting really made this worthwhile. And for the price, you can't beat that for a game that will still run on a 486 if you have one laying around. For the hobbyist gamer or collector I would recomend this game. It's time has come and past, but it is a must have in any CD Archive.
fun and challengng

WarCraft II isn't exactly the freshest real-time strategy game on the market, but that doesn't mean it's any less fun than it used to be. For those of you who missed it the first time around, WarCraft II is set in a fantasy realm where knights hack at trolls with swords, deadly spells crisscross the battlefield, and powerful fortresses dot the landscape. The game pits the evil orcs against the humans, letting players choose whichever side they want in a series of battles over the world. With the WarCraft II: Battle Chest, players can experience the magic of the original game along with the added enhancements of the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion pack. Rounding out the Battle Chest is a complete strategy guide that will walk beginners through the basics and provide more experienced players with advanced tactics so they can master the game. That's good, because players will need all the help they can get challenging other WarCraft II fans online. It's possible to challenge one to eight other players on the developer's free Battle.net servers, while more solitary gamers can immerse themselves in one of the fun single-player campaigns or stand-alone missions. WarCraft II's finely balanced gameplay has lost none of its charm, even if the graphics are aging. In most missions you start with a small force and must gather enough resources to build a strong base of operations that can field a formidable army.

This game is one of the best strategy games ever developed, the second best after StarCraft. Many games have great graphics, great game play or great multiplay. But only few games have it all. WarCraft does have it all. Excellent story line, funny sound effects, marvelous single player missions, addicting multiplay and great graphics. Altough WarCraft II the game is 4 years old, and although there have been much development in the game industry the last 4 years, this game is still great and addicting with todays standards and tops most of today's games. Battle.net edition improves the gaming experience by enhancing multiplay and controls.
