Fun until you hit the bug

My daughter went head-over-heels for the "Barbie in the Princess and the Pauper" movie, so naturally, she just had to have the game for her computer. The game's lovely graphics and professional vocals and audio effects do the movie great justice, as the player controls "Erica," completing a variety of missions. The missions are stereotypical kinds of things that little girls go crazy for, such as growing flowers, decorating the castle, baking and decorating cakes, and so forth. There are a few more non-stereotypical missions, too, but they're in the minority (which is fine for my daughter, being the "princess" that she is).
Sadly, as with other players, she cannot actually finish the game and get to the coronation finale at the end. The same bug that has plagued so many others has hit her copy as well: "Erica" can no longer sing, and therefore cannot locate the other singers necessary for the coronation.
Worse, Vivendi Universal's technical support has only "canned" responses that would help if it were related to driver incompatibility. But this is a plain, old fashioned, software bug, and that's something they just can't help with.
Don't risk disappointing your own kids: pass this title by.
How to get past the singing bug

If you are seeing the error message "LipMgr.play -> EzDlgNone has loaded no lip synch data" on the singer recruiting task, here's how to get past it:
This bug will not occur if you only give a flower to the correct singers (the ones who sing note patterns that match Erika's). Watch the little display in the lower right of the screen and sing any of the three patterns shown at the top. When the correct singers respond, their note pattern will appear below Erika's. Give them a flower. But if the singer is bad, only gray circles will appear. If you give a bad singer a flower, you will often hit the bug. So just make sure your daughter doesn't try to recruit the bad singers, and all should be well.
Except for this bug, the game is a lot of fun. My 5 year old loves it, and was able to play the entire game with almost no help.

My 4 year old daughter loves this game. She's 2 years below the recommended age, but with adult supervision and coaching is able to play the game.
This game builds on itself. You begin with easy tasks and progress to more difficult tasks that require a more mature thought process. I am able to discuss the problem solving steps with my child during this game and she is able to then deduct what she should do next.
Her favorite tasks are baking cakes, making stained glass windows, flags, and taking care of the kittens in this game. You are only required to do each of these tasks once. However, it is possible to go back and do these tasks multiple times (which my daughter does repeatedly).
This game is nice because it makes the learning process fun. My daughter loves the storyline and is anxious to get to the coronation of Erika. (I have to admit that I played the game through one evening after my daughter was asleep just to see what happened at the end.)
Anytime you exit the game, your point of progess in the game is saved. This means that you can stop at anytime and resume hours or days later where you left off. I love this feature as the game is lengthy. I believe there are 18 or so tasks to solve.
This game is just good, clean fun.

My 7 year old daughter played this game for 3 hours straight the day we got it. She loves the game but got VERY frustrated when we ran into a software glitch at th 17 th step -- one step away from making the coronation! My suggestion to avoid this is to make sure you use the log the woodsman gives you to cross the muddy patch to collect the toolbox. My daughter did not and she was unable to give the snacks she collected later to the sheep herder. This prevented her from continuing on in the game. I think the log and the snacks must hold the same spot on the ribbon bar. I played the game with her under a different sign on name and had no problem when we used the log to cross the mud.

My daughters are ages 4 and 6. They both LOVE this game! There are so many places to go and things to do. They play this game several times a week and still haven't completed it yet - so it hasn't lost it's charm yet. I bought the game as soon as it came out because they love the Princess and the Pauper movie and it has provided hours and hours of enjoyment! I imagine they will still be having as much fun with it months from now too because of all the creative activities in the game. They get to decorate cakes, design stained glass windows that are then put in the windows of the shops, they can wander all around the town and the woods. They have to find Erika's kitten lost in the woods by singing songs, and much more ... I have as much fun watching and listening to them play as they have playing the game!

My daughters absolutely love this game-I thought it might be difficult for my 3 1/2 year old, but my 5 year old helped her along the way. As far as "bugs" that another reviewer said they had gotten-that is caused either by lack of memory in the computer or you need a new video card for the computer-we have 2 computers, mine and my husbands computer is fully loaded with everything we need and it is very fast. Our daughters computer on the other hand has quite a bit of memory and a good video card but when the girls use the game on their computer Erica walks much slower and hesitates when you need to hear her tell you something-but when it is played on our computer-Erica walks very fast and has no problem speaking when asked a question. Another tip about the game is make sure that you turn OFF your screen saver or that you have it set to come on at least 20 minutes or more (both of ours have a Flat Screen LCD Monitor)-I mention this because if the child walks away and the screen saver comes on and then the child goes back to play the game, the game window will be much smaller than before and there is no way to maximize the window again or even to exit out of the game without going into the task manager and ending the program that way. All in all the game is fabulous and very creative, it keeps the girls attention focused on the game, unlike alot of the other games that are out there. Best thing to do before purchasing the game CHECK YOUR COMPUTERS SYSTEM AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE ALL THE REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PLAY THE GAME-READ ALL THE GAMES SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ON THE PACKAGE DESCRIPTION-if you get it without doing so-the game will not play properly and either you will get stuck with an unusable game or you will end up having to shell out more $$$$$$ to upgrade your computer just for the game. Not to mention the fact that you will also have a very unhappy little girl on you hands.
I love the game and so do my girls-if you have all the requirements-I recommend you get it for your little princess.
Singing level bug on Mac version

As happened to Cliff J on a PC, we've experienced the singing bug on the Mac OS9.2 version. After successfully recruiting a singer from the town, the note singing interface stopped working, and no one can be recruited to the choir. Now my daughter is stuck at this level and is very disappointed that she can't see Barbie's coronation!
Wow! I'm impressed..........

My 8 year old girl has several Disney princess games and they're stupid, so I was skeptical about this. Way better then Disney. It's an excellent game, my daughter plays all the time. In fact the whole family likes to play it. From my 3 year old son to my "tough guy" husband. We like decorating cakes and making stain glass windows in a thousand different ways. The graphics, color, and sound are great. I highly recommend it. We have not experienced a bug like another reviwer did. I have not experienced that on any of my games.
My kids love it

The five-star rating comes directly from my daughters. They play this game often and have pronounced it "wonderful and awesome." My five-year-old loves to decorate the cakes and my seven-year-old thinks the treasure hunt for the flowers is great fun. The activities are varied enough to keep them interested and challenging enough that they like to play again and again. True, the tasks are a little girly, but I have very girly-girls and they are quite satisfied with it. My younger daughter has needed a little help finishing, but she'd rather just stop and decorate cakes for hours anyway. We've finished the game more than once and haven't encounterd any software bugs.
My only complaint is why does Princess Anneliese have an English accent? That's a little weird.
Overall though, it's a great game. We love it.

This game is great! It has so many things to do and redo! My daughter is 4 and adores this game and she can do everything on it. I had no problems with this game at all. This is my first review I have ever wrote, I usually don't, but this game was so good, I made it a point to write in.
