Palyed demo- looks good.

I FIANLLY managed to find a demo site that wasn't going to take 9-odd hours to download a demo (even though I have a cable modem)
The game looks very good. Raven did a good job of tweeking the slightly older Quake II engine so that the graphics are still amazing. The weapons and sound effects thereof are quite good. The enemy AI is very nicely modeled, too. You can't just run up and blast someone- they will hear you.
The all to famous gore is just as advertised. I've seen other games that I thought were pretty neat, and SoF put them to shame.
I plan on buying the Platinum Edition of this game as soon as I can afford it. (Which will be about another week and a half.)
I will update my review with a new star rating (if needed) just as soon as I get my copy.

Soldier of fortune is a good fps with a story driven single player gameplay and a great multiplayer gameplay. You play John Mullis a soldier and he sounds like micheal douglas. The story a gang war has taken place in the new york subway and the cops have been beaten, Though it is not a military operation the captain let you (john) and your patner handle the situation, The leader gets away and you find out that something much bigger than the gang war has happened. Four nuclear weapons are stolen and you have to get them back and stop the terrorist organisation. The game includes lots of very intresting missions in new york, Iraq, sudan, japan ect. The level design is very good, It is fun and challenging to get through the level. The selection of weapons though not outstanding are very good and their effects are very realistic. The unique ghoul feature feature is superb, You can blast the bad guys into a dozen pieces. The game is very violant and there are loads of nasty sences, You could see a guys head blown to bits, arms comming off ect, In the sudan cow factory you need to travel through a whole place full of blood. I played sof on the default openGL video mode and it runs very smooth. It is built on a modified Quake2 engine with detailed textures, 32bit color ect. The graphics, charecter animation and sound recording are very good. Sof's main menu is very good, You can reduce the violance in the game. You can tweak the enemy toughness, enemy respawning, Inventory carrying capacity, save game limits. With those options you can make sof very hard or very easy. Soldier of fortune is a very good game for fps fans, but it is not as good as half-life or no one lives forever.

I found myself wanting this game to be overwith after 20 minutes of gameplay.I kept waiting for the game to get better, but it only get's worse. The graphics [are not good] and the gameplay is old and tired. The people who wrote good reviews about this game worry me.I will always be suspicious of game reviews from now on.If you want a true FPS game try 'No one lives forever' it will satisfy what you are looking for.Avoid Soldier of Fortune...

diablo in FPS

This game is absolutely great.

First of all, the graphics are amazing. Everything looks realistic, and detailed. As are the sounds.

Second, the game play is nothing to be compared to. You don't feel uncomfortable with your mouse and keyboard. Movements are smooth, you don't have to spend half your bullets trying to hit your target. You have a good number of Weapons, bad guys, and levels. The game includes way too many levels, and hours of gaming, in many different countries and places.

Third, it's as realistic as it could be. You hit them in the leg, they start jumping around. you hit them in the head, they fall, you hit them BETWEEN their legs ==> Believe me, ouch :)
And even that depends on the weapon. If you're using a Shotgun, you'll see them falling apart, even their heads can blow up. In the train level, if you hit the Helicopter Pilot with your sniper, you'll see blood all over inside the heli.

The game doesn't contain much secrets if that's what you are expecting. It's more like Blow'em up style. You don't get lost in the scenarios, and that's what makes it fun. And if you don't like that, you can always try the easy way, using a sniper.

So much fun, you can play it a lot of time. I didn't notice any bug while playing.
Watch out for the Violence and Game's Requirements.

Buy the game, it's really worth it.

Violence Has Evolved

Soldier of Fortune is a breakthrough of violence in the gaming world! But that is all it is. The game uses a heavily modified version of the quake 2 engine. The characters look somewhat blocky. The worst part of the game is that it is extremely repetitive. You kill person after person after person, that's all you do. By the end of the game you'll have killed over 1000 people. The story wasn't worth telling, and the enemies never get exciting. The difficulty settings were badly designed, luckily you can create a custom difficulty setting, which I reccomend.

If you enjoy computer game violence this is for you. You'll dissembody every conceiveable body part. You'll here men screaming as their skin burns. If you don't care what the violence in games looks like there are many other FPS's better than this.

Great for working off the tension

When you've had one of THOSE days, and you just want soem first-person shooter action, this is certainly worth a try. Yes, this game is violent, if you choose to play it that way, but you can install it with the violence "blocked", although I did not do that so i can't say what it will look like.

I liked the way the story was woven into the shooting action, I thought the developers handled the story and the character development well. I was kept interested anyway.

The graphics and sounds ROCK. However - I have a fairly heavy-duty CPU at home. My laptop (733Mhz, 128MB RAM) handles it kinda jerkily. Multiple resolutions are supported and - YOU CAN PLAY WITHOUT THE CD IN THE DRIVE! Of course this means you need like 900MB of free hard drive space....

Multiplayer is fun but a little frantic. It's a good diversion when you just have to blow up some digital butt!

This game has some of the best graphics that I have seen in a long time. I had played Unreal Tournament GOTY Edition for a long time before this and this is better by far. The only problem I have is the lack of the skirmish or offline multiplayer because of my dial up connection. I only have the Gold edition, but I have heard that there isn't much of a change between the two. One of the best things about this is the controls. Being able to lean around things helps, and even better is being able to zoom in and out wiht the sniper rifle. The gun models are also far superior. I have a 1ghz athlon with a 64meg GeForce 2 and 128megs ram and there is almost no loading time between missions.

Trust me this is what a bullet does to you

My friends older brother owns this game and he lets me play it every now and then. Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Being an extreme fps player, the graphics were outstanding and the reality of it is also astonishing. For insatance if you shoot someon in the arm with a .50 Desert Eagle they will clutch their arm in pain and there will be a hole in their arm, of course tere are exit wounds. Also if you shoot anyuone with a shotgun something is guarenteed to blow up or blow off with much blood after each shot. The problems are that grenades never work since people are to fast. Not done with the gore. If you shoot someone in the mans weakpoint (which is the troat area between your chest) with a sniper rifle they will fly back with a hole inthem and roll their eyes up as doing so. If you thought that half-life is the goriest think again this goes all out. A must play unless you are squemish. Also what the hell is this guy ulike it looks on the cover which is a well organized delta force personal its more like angry mitia men/ex swat comandos and the funkiest swat Fbi team sent by Ozzy Osborne or something. My final words for this review are buy it.

Gimmicky, but still worth it

The word-of-mouth factor for this game was off the charts when it was released due to the supposedly incredible level of violence displayed throughout the game. Is it violent? Yeah, but that sort of gimmickry really only works on the teenagers and Washington DC lobbyists. The excessive gore gets old quicker than you'll anticipate, but thankfully you'll still be left with an above-average first-person-shooter.

The developers called it GHOUL, translated it means the baddies react to wherever they get shot, sometimes hopping on one foot, sometimes covering their nether-regions, or simply revealing some blown-out intestines. It's interesting about the first dozen times, but afterwards it's just more same-old same-old. This GHOUL system isn't defined enough to really provide a wealth of anatomically correct reactions, only about 7 or 8.

The gameplay itself is based on the now-classic Quake II engine, and while not providing the depth of Rainbow Six, or the intricate plot of Half-Life, it still manages to give the single-player gamer a compelling ride. The story is fairly thin, almost non-existant, and the gameplay is linear to the point where any deep thought is rarely called for. Just kill everyone you see, except the occasional civilian, who you most certainly will kill anyway because the targeting cursor is so small that distinguishing green from red is practically impossible in the heat of battle.

The "Platinum Edition" is nothing more than the Gold Edition with 5 extra multiplayer levels, a preview of SOF2, and the Brady Games strategy guide which is provided on disc, not in book form. So in short, it is worth it and stands on its own as a derivative, straightforward, yet fun FPS. Just don't count on the carnage providing any long-term satisfaction.
