I'm a HUGE fan of the Spider-man 2 game on PS2. After finishing the game, I literally spent hours and hours swinging from building to building in sort of a "stress release after work" mode. One of my favorite things to do was to climb to the top of the Empire State Building, and jump off in a great swan dive, spiralling down until just before I hit the ground. Talk about thrilling!

So, I was excited when I learned that Spider-man 3 was coming out this weekend just as the movie was about to hit the theaters. However, the results are coming off as a bit disappointing. I spent most of yesterday playing the game, and admittedly, I'm not through the entire experience. So far, I've been less than impressed, compared to the fun experience in Spidey 2. Here are some of the changes in the third game:

1.. New York City seems much less detailed than in the first one. Several buildings of importance seem to be missing, mainly the UN and the Chrysler Building. I actively sought out those buildling, especially the Chrysler Building with it's great eagle heads that allowed for some fun dives in SM2. Not here. Not, at least, as I could find. The city as a whole seems more like a shadow of itself. Where is Madison Square Garden? Ellis Island?

2. Once you complete a mission, the screen momentarily goes black, and then, you are back in the city. I know this might seem petty, but for some reason, it was really irritating me. Once I was done with a mission, I wanted to zoom away and not have to wait for the game to reset.

3. The police issues are constantly repetitive. Now, this was an issue in SM2... I mean, how many balloons did I have to rescue? But with this game, I already had to rescue tourists from canisters of laughing gas three times yesterday set by warring gangs. Canisters of laughing gas? C'mon!

4. The "bad guys" resemble odd creatures from the Black Lagoon. When sent on an errand, you fight these weird looking creatures that are definitely not human. Occasionally, with gang activity, you actually get to fight people, but for the most part, you are up against these Sleestacks things.

5. On one of the first photographic missions, you are sent to Central Park to photograph "lizard like creatures" terrorizing the citizens. That was just plain silly. I stopped wanting to go to the Bugle offices quickly to avoid any more embarrassing assignments like that!

6. The people on the streets are rendered quite unrealistic. At one point, I was transferring a victim to an ambulance on a sidewalk. As I was doing so, a citizen walked right through the ambulance, as if she were a ghost. That rendering is almost laughable. On another occasion, I was returning a car bombing victim to an ambulance, and the vehicle was parked backed up against a building. I actually had to walk into the wall to set the victim down. I don't recall that ever happening in SM2. Plus the people don't really seem to have any sense of physicality. They are frequently walking through cars, things on the sidewalk, and sometimes even me, Spider-man!

On the plus side, the Spidey controls are similar to SM2, and zipping along the buildings is still quite fun. There seems to be more taller buildings that in SM2. At night, the buildings look quite pretty. The game seems to follow the movie (I have yet to see it this weekend), and has other side stories that integrate into the game.

Overall, I was expecting so much more from SM3! I wanted them to keep the original format of the game in SM2, and make gentle improvements, and follow the story for the latest movie. Instead, they ended up tinkering with what I loved most, and in the end, created an incredibly disappointing product.

Good thing I still have SM2, I think I'll pop it in right now and take a joyful swing around the town I love so well. And maybe I'll get back to SM3.... but no rush.

my spidy sense is tingleing, this game was garbage

This game was bad the story was too short the game got boring quickly, the graphic was ugh, this was a really bad game part1 and2 is way better. I liked part1 the most it was real fun and exiteing, part2 was real great the quality was great the graphic was great and the storymode was great to kinda weird but it was great. I beat all the spiderman games and this was the worst game id ever played, this was just a little upgrade from part2 but this had bad quality and graphic, this game sucked i got ried of it long time ago boring and terrible game.

Just Another Average Spider-Man Game.

The SPIDER-MAN 3 game loosely follows the plot of the SPIDER-MAN 3 movie. Harry Osborne as the New Goblin tries to kill Peter/Spider-Man. Venom sneaks into Peter's house and joins itself with his Spidey suit. Flint Marko is turned into Sandman and starts stealing money throughout New York. Eddie Brock gets involved in a serious competitive rivalry with Peter and the game concludes with a massive battle involving four characters with different powers. There are some differences between the general plot of the game and the general plot of the movie, but overall they are very similar. There's also a subplot in the game involving the Lizard. This subplot is almost as long as the regular plot and allows interaction with many more characters.

As far as game play, I was a bit disappointed by SPIDER-MAN 3. You can swing all around New York City, which is really cool. However, there aren't very many maneuvers and combos and Spidey's overall fighting style really suffers because of it. You are able to use the Venom costume and it increases Spider-Man's strength and health, but it can only be used for a limited amount of time. It would have been nice to actually be able to go into some buildings instead of just swinging around them. There's also a fairly long load time between scenes. Normally this isn't too big of a deal, but is annoying when fighting bosses. Most of the actors from the movie lend their voices to the video game and Bruce Campbell once again returns in vocal form as the games narrator.

Overall, the game isn't too bad, but it does seem like it was put together rushed in order to coincide with the release of the film. I realize that the filmmakers want to capitalize on the movie's release date, but they'd probably make more money if they allowed for a little more time on the game's development. The game isn't too difficult for younger and novice players, is a decent game for average gamers, and will probably be frowned upon by master gamers.

Spider-man 3 was pretty good. I liked the control setup. Great graphics overall. Only problem was it loaded after every mission and a few graphic glitches (PS2). Basically a good game SP2 was a little better.

The whole game went into the programming of the black suit, fine and dandy, but that is the only thing they worked truly hard on. The more you put on the suit the harder it is to take off, pain in the *** if your in a boss battle. And the glitches, so many glitches, I had to restart my Ps2 on a brand new game. I played the second version of Spider-Man, not one glitch, not one complaint. The moves were well done along with the web rodeo when you swing around baddies in a circle, unfortunately the third game failed to accomplish this task of a smooth motion swing if you even managed to swing them. Poor dodge, they've reduced him to a roll away, no more super slo-mo bend backward and to the side almost infinitely. And they took bullets out of the third game. OMG! Is there no more challenges! Alright they do have a challenge, take a picture of every villain you see. Easier said than done especially when the villain's kicking your butt halfway across the city and your trying to find him in your lens, and that's not the only thing, you take a picture, think "well I got him on film, kick his butt to the curb, and wala, you lost the picture and you never find the guy again all because you didn't get him in the right spot so the camera turns green". This happened about 10 times. Then there's the meteorites. You have to find them, again easy enough, well... I peaked out at 11 after I scoured the city for hours. Then there's the Spidey symbols, there's 5, I found... 1, They better give you a **** load of stuff if you find 5. Another thing is that there's no stores to go into, a pleasure in the second game, and no buying with hero points that are easy to come by, only experience points that you have to take out about 1000 bad guys to get 1 while the new moves you get are about 8 of them. There should be a mass burning of this game.
