Another cel-shaded adventure game not to be missed

Sly Cooper is Sony's new action/adventure game...it incorporates modern 3D graphics, but uses cel-shaded overlays and simple gameplay to give it that classic platformer feel. You play as Sly Cooper, a racoon whose goal is to retrieve his family's stolen book of theiving techniques. You'll make your way through the game collecting it back piece by piece and gaining new skills while doing so. The in-game graphics are clean and refined, and carry over the cartoon-like atmosphere found in the cinematic cut-scenes well. Even though the whole game is rather easy to beat, the experience from beginning to end is a grand one. Sly's only drawback is that there is some slowdown present in the later levels. It never really interferes with the gameplay, but it can get annoying at times. I also would have liked to see this game to be just a little longer. By the time you collect all of the skills, the game is just about over (I estimate it will take the average player about 7-10 hours to beat). Overlooking those small flaws however, Sly Cooper is an excellent choice for PS2 owners looking for another great platformer to add to their collection.

He's One Cunning, Devious, Thievius Raccoonus!!!!

In my opinion, Sly Cooper has to be one of the most remarkable games I've ever played. First of all, Sly is a thief on the run in search of his long-lost family heirloom--the "Thievius Raccoonus" book. When he was only eight years old, some ruthless thieves stole the book. Ten years later, Sly's out to find what is rightfully his! He and his pals, Bentley the turtle and Murray the hippo are out to find the book. But then there's the bad guys, the Fiendish Five who try and stop Sly--not to mention Carmelita Montoya Fox who's been on the lookout for Sly for a very long, long time.

Anyway, Sly is very easy to maneuver, the scenarios are astonishing and vibrant (not to mention extremely realistic), Sly's moves are sneaky and slinky, the storyline is excellent and well thought about, and the bad guys are humorous and well, bad.

For all you picky gamers out there, saving is almost perpetual, loading time doesn't even take a split second, finding anything else you need to get to or do is a cinch, and everything in the game moves smoothly and systematically, so don't worry about this game being a "maybe" or a "what if...?" You will definitely and seriously NOT regret purchasing this game. It's hours of some serious thieving!!! =)

this game is totally awsome!!!

I tested this game, it is really cool. Alot of the game revovles around stealth. You have to sneak alot and stay out of the light. This game is very entertaining. If you like Metal Gear Solid you will like this game too.

Finally, an original platformer!

When most people first look at this game, they see a strange name and cell shading, and quickly turn away. While this game can be perfectly fun for the younger group of kids, and still be fun enough for almost everyone else.

The basic plot of the game is fairly straightforward: You are the youngest in a long line of burglars. Back when you were very young, a group of five evil beings came to your house and stole the family treasure, the Thevious Racconnus. Now you must steal all the pieces of the book back from the ones who took it from you. It's a nice plot, but in the game, it really only ties into it when showing movies between areas.

As for the sound, we must remember that this game has many stealth elements (you're a burglar, after all), so the music, or almost complete lack thereof, fits. When you trip an alarm or something similar, the faint notes and small tune will pick up, but it's not too bad.

One of the first major games to use cell shading, when Sly Cooper first came out, the graphics weren't that popular (anyone remember the Zelda fiasco?). But once you accept the style, you can really start to notice the vibrant background and flawless animation of the game.

Even the controls are great. One way this was managed is the fact there are so few buttons used. You've got the control stick, four action buttons and a zoom feature (but that's really all you need). Apart from a few instances in which it might be hard to grab onto a rope or hook, in most cases, you get it the second time.

The biggest problem I had with parts of the game was that they were just too hard! (But lets just say I'm not always the best at mastering games). Also, the game requires you to play through each level several times. It's fine for a while, but when you're forced to play a level a lot of times just to find one item, it gets very annoying.

Pros:
Wonderful graphics
Simple controls

Cons:
Levels don't have much replay value
Not much of a soundtrack

Except for a few minor problems, Sly Cooper is an entirely enjoyable platformer, and one of the best I've seen in a long time.

Favorite platform game on PS2

In a word this game is AWESOME. I have enjoyed it more than any other title I have played this past year. Artistically it is one the most impressive looking games I have seen on PS2. The worlds are big and well arted, it feels like a game where every detail in the environment was made conscientiously. What really separates Sly from other titles is the amount of personality and originality that went into this game. The way the character feels in the game, the physics, the mood, the story are all flawlessly executed. The game is edgy and cool without being too over the top. You play as a raccoon who is a thief trying to steal back pages of a book that was a valuable family heirloom. You receive help from Bentley a turtle who is also a technical genius and Murray a Hippo that is kind of the goofy sidekick type.

It is a game where the story is written in a way that both kids and adults will enjoy. I cannot say enough good words it was fun and memorable game experience.

Sweet, Sweet Sly Cooper!

Visually this game is perfect!

This is a must buy, folks. You play Sly Cooper, thieving super scoundrel out to make the "bad" thieves pay for their theft of the "Thievius Raccoonus" a manual for how to be a thief (of all things).

So you need to beat all these animal bosses and break into all of their lairs using stealth and combat. It's well done and big fun.

Play it for no other reason than the fact that it is probably one of the most attractive games you will ever see. Get hooked on it because it's one of the most fun games you will ever play!

One devious, thievious racoonus!!

Every once in a while along comes a sleeper of a game that takes you by surprise. On the Playstation 1 that game was Ape Escape. Now the PS2 offers up Sly Cooper. And man this is one racoon with some serious style!!

Even though this may look like your average platform game, it is anything but. Sly Cooper takes advantage of unique Cel Shading graphics to give the game a 1940's cartoon style that is very original. Sly Cooper's hi res-graphics offer up plenty of detail, so much that you'll be covering some of the same ground repeatedly because you want to make sure that you've seen the entire gamescape. The only criticism I have of the graphics is that occasionaly you'll experience some slow down. But in a game this good it's forgivable. The sounds is also top notch. Breaking glass, water dripping, and sneaky footsteps really bring a complete sensural experience.

It's no exagerration to say that this is probably one of the deepest games in terms of variety of gameplay that you'll buy all year. Sucker Punch serves up healthy doses of cool moves including stealth, slow-mo jumps, invisibility and ninja spire jumps that you acquire as you gather different parts of the Cooper family book the Thieviuos Racoonus. All of these moves add new and compelling ways to play each level. The action is never dull or slow. And just when you think that you've done a level before, the crew of Sucker Punch throws in a mini-game to break up the level and provide a new challenge. The only thing that is frustrating is the master thief sprint. Sometimes the sprints border on impossibility simply because there doesn't seem to be enough time to complete them.

My only real criticism aside the ones I've mentioned, is that the game is a bit short. You can complete it in about 10-12 hours of gameplay. But the game is compelling enough that you don't feel cheated by the ending. There are also some unlockable extras including some behind the scenes production videos and the Japanese intro.

Overall this is one title you won't be sorry you plunked down your hard earned cash for. Sony and Sucker Punch have come up with a winner in Sly Cooper. Here's hoping that this Thievious Racoonus returns for a sequel.

Husband and kids think it's the greatest!

I bought this at Christmas time and it has been great fun ever since. My 10 year old daughter and my husband take turns playing and they love to outbest each other. This game in my book has been our best PS/2 investment and the most entertaining.

A Great Game!

Even with all the titles for PS2, it's kind of hard to find a game that small children can play without getting frustrated.
Sly Cooper is just the game we were looking for. My 4 and 6 year olds love this game and can't get enough of it. The controls are easy to use. You don't have to know how to read to understand what tasks you need to complete since the game gives you audio hints and instructions. The graphics are very nice as well.

I would highly reccommend Sly for your family.
