Mixed Feelings

I bought this title because it didn't cost as much as some of the other options and because I didn't figure Phil Gordon would endorse anything that wasn't useful.

The poker calculator and tournament timer are great features, although the calculator is painfully slow compared to pokerstove, which is free. The home game I play in uses the tournament timer, although that's all the use I personally have for it at present.

I have not tried playing online through this program, since I play online all the time anyway, so I am not evaluating that feature.

However, the much-vaunted "AI" opponents are just not very good, and one could form some really bad habits by practicing against them. In particular, they check and call too much, and lay down to any bet or raise any time the flop misses them, so you can pile up chips with impunity, and you know as soon as they even call a raise that they have a hand and you can let that one go. You encounter a few players like this in real tournaments, but they usually aren't the ones with lots of chips, and like bank robber Willie Sutton, you need to go where the chips are.

The graphics are mildly irritating, and if the colors are customizable, I didn't find those options.

This might be OK for a beginner to use for a while, but if you're even close to becoming a strong player, I wouldn't expect too much help here.

DD Poker 2 is great for playing online over the internet. The public games are fun and the online community is very friendly. I love the stats that they keep on their website (for free). The best part about playing online is you can fill empty seats with DD Poker's computer players (AI). It's much tougher than in version 1.0. Another fun thing is playing with a private group of friends over the LAN. Overall, a great revision to an good original.

This software is so easy to use and a novice player can learn the basics and feel at easy. It is also able to be used in such a way that an expert player can learn the more complex nuances of the game and dig deep in to the strategy of the game. It is also fantastic tool to play against your friends from around the country with having to pay a fee. It is an excellent game and I highly recommend it.

Great way to sharpen your Texas Hold'em skills

"No Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament Edition 2006" aka "DD Poker 2" is a fun way to improve your poker skills. Although the retail name starts with "No Limit", that's really due to the tremendous popularity of "no limit" these days - the game also supports limit and pot limit.

Free updates to the game have improved the AI of computer opponents. Playing against the computer in "Practice" mode is now quite challenging.

Of course the best way to practice poker is against other people, and DD Poker 2 provides multiple ways to do that too. Online games can be private games against friends, co-workers, and family (either via a LAN or over the Internet) or public Internet games that other DD Poker 2 owners host. All such games are for free - what's at stake is your pride (and your ranking on DD's Leaderboard when you play in public games). That said, you could in theory play private games for money and settle up separately (DD Poker obviously does nothing to facilitate this).

The level of play in public games varies from fast and furious games where play is wild and unsophisticated (very similar to some of the free online poker sites) to expert play in invitationals (great practice for late stage or final table play in money tournaments). If your primary goal is to improve your poker skills, then play well, be polite, and post on the forums and you'll soon be able to play in some very challenging high skill online games.

The game also features great analysis of your play hand by hand (it keeps extensive records of how you've played), a poker clock that you can use to remind you of the current blinds if you host a home game, and a poker calculator/simulator that lets you figure out what the odds are in almost any conceivable situation.

What's missing in this version? Well there aren't any cutesy animated graphics of your fellow poker players, but personally I don't mind that. The game focuses solidly on useful and fun ways to improve your poker skills while enjoying yourself.

Look & Feel Not As Good

I liked the original version of Donohoe Digital's No Limit Texas Hold'em program and give that program five stars. The new program adds more featuresm including the ability to play on-line, but the look and feel of the new version leaves much to be desired. The tables felt colors don't look as good as the original version's and the new card faces are horrible. The look and feel of the original version was much better. Also, I find the number of options and settings available confusing.

A poor Version of No-LImit Poker

The game was not what I expected there were no graphics in todays
market there should be more graphics and anamated players. This game does not make me want to play it. If I could return it and get my money I would.

UNREALISTIC RESULTS

the odds are always against you when you play against the computer players. if you have a good hand, the computer players all fold before the flop. if you try to bluff, there is always a high pair or a set on the table. if you go all-in and don't have the best hand, you can never catch a card on the turn or the river. very different than what you see in real tournaments.

Good in some ways but not in others

I would like to start by saying this game truly deserves 3.5 stars,
not 3 and not 4.

I liked the original version, DD Tournament No Limit Hold Em
and this new version of the game is in some ways better.
The graphics are sharper,it has a lot of helpful tools for weaker players and even lets you pick which style your opponents will play.

The real problem is there is nothing impressive at all about the AI. A lot of the players make totally awful decisions preflop
and then play the most transparent poker imaginable after the
flop. Much of the time, the weak A.I. will allow itself to call all the way post flop with only King high! This is of course an easy way to win money. The idea of calling a re-raise from a tight player with A.J. offsuit seems bad, but only until a cpu opponent reraises with 52! There is no rhyme or reason to much of the AI betting; Continuation bets and etc, do not exist in this game. If the AI were a bit better, this game would perhaps be able to get 5 stars.

I have been playing DD poker live online for a few months now and I can say that the quality and skill level of the DD players is second to none.Definately for the player who is serious about their game. All in all the time just dosn't cut it here. The players host the games and have the ability to ban abusive players.I like that.open and invite only games can be hosted or played,The forums at DD are super.Easy to get involved.Bottom line is the quality of play, excellent options, good practice tourneys and very few poker idiots messing up the games, they dont last long at DD.If you dont care to improve your game, probably not for you.Great group of skilled and helpful players though.

Quick! Order this if you play Texas Holdem.
