The STANDARD by which modern RPG's are judged..

Neverwinter Nights is not perfect. Perhaps the biggest complaint is their inaccurate implementation of the D&D ruleset (3.1 I believe) which caused some friction between bioware and Wizards of the Coast and caused Bioware to invent their own fantasy realm to compete with D&D. Which is all seems so unbelievable considering that Bioware with the incredible sales of Baldur's Gate really rescued D&D from dwindling into obscurity. But, the history of this game and their incredible creators (Bioware) is besides the point. Neverwinter Nights position in the history of CRPG'ing is well established. It is the standard by which all newcomers will be judged.

It was this game that gave the death knell to turned based computer RPG's. The trend was that turned based combat was too slow and unexciting. The nerd in me would disagree, but the child in me would wholeheartedly agree, so I can see both sides of this issue. My opinion matters not in the grand scheme of things as the 'action' RPG trend has consumed the market. This was largely due to the suceess of this game.

I am rating this game long after I have played every chapter to conclusion. After I have played numerous FREE fan generated story content. After I have created enough Forgotten Realms characters to populate the entire city of Neverwinter. It is true that the first chapter was so-so in terms of story. It is true that the second chapter was almost dull in terms of story. It is true that the last chapter was truly epic. But these are VERY MINOR QUALMS in terms of what Neverwinter Nights means. Neverwinter Nights is another realm. It is a well created fantasy world you recreate on your computer. The characters look a little cartoonish, but not like Zelda. Like D&D, in an exagerated way.

This was the first game (it beat Morrowind) to have the ability to really really change the appearance of your character to correspond to what your character is wearing. This simple thing really lends to the sense of accomplishment, the sense of achievement. The implementation was not perfect, but it was much improved by the third chapter. The net result of all the changes lead to a rich world that you can interact with. It is a fairly non-linear world, with a lot of depth. When you add in all the custom content, the player designed worlds, you have really SO much from this one simple well priced package, it should be completely irresistable. Even on an old system, things look GREAT. Armor is shiny, water looks pretty good, and even your hair cut waves when you bob your head. It is an immersive experience.

If you haven't played this game, or if you never got all the chapters, you are missing out. You must try this. If you are a turned based officianado, this might not be enough to convert you, but you ought to find out why the 'action' market is taking over. You have access to enough consumer made content to keep you occupied for months and months if not years. It is really the best deal in RPG'ing out there, even if it is a bit dated. I still play, from time to time, and I have the new incarnation of this series as well. So try it...what have you got to lose but free time anyway?

The down sides that no one talks about.

Most people quickly point out that w/ both expansion packs, this game is over 100 hours long. While that is a plus, the buyer should beware: 100 hours is equal to over four days of non-stop game player (if you also sleep, it's actually closer to a full week).
The other down side of this game is that there's a lot of places to go and they are not all easy to find (for those who played Diablo II, think the Jungle level but for the entire game). This game requires a walkthrough, or atleast an annotated map of each area. Trust me, w/o it, it may take another day or two to finish the game. Luckily there are many walkthroughs available on-line, and for free.

Pretty good, but still has flaws

I'm enjoying the game for the most part. The graphics are very good. The story is interesting. Voice acting is really good. What flaws it has isn't going to make me stop playing the game, but they are still annoying.

As I play NWN, I can't help but campare it to Diablo 2. The fighting is slow and rather dull. It seems to take forever to level up even at very low levels because the XP for killing stuff is rather low. I find contolling the character rather difficult. If I want to go towards the camara and click that area, he moves very slowly and for only a couple of feet. So, I'm forced to turn the camara around. Sometimes he'll just stop fighting. By the time I noticed he's not doing anything anymore he's almost dead. When I tell the NPC that is with me to stay put they still come running in to get killed. Diablo 2 seemed to have millions of different weapons, armors, ext because of the prefix and sufix system they used. I just don't feel like there is enough veriety of weapons and armor. And, I really can't tell if my armor is really doing anything. For example, I have a large tower shield. Sometimes I switch to a torch if I can't see well. I find I do just as well having a torch in one hand instead of a shield. Seems to do me no good. I have yet to find a helmet that takes damage. They seem to only enhance certain values instead. I find the "save" feature VERY annoying. I hate having to save before going into EACH and every room. Then I get really mad when I forget to save for about an hour and have to trudge through it all again.

But, with this said I'm still going to keep playing it.

Avid gamer since pacman and frogger. This is Great stuff. Graphics are amazing and the game play is just simply, addictive. Good job intergrating ADD rules and the interface is the best I have seen in any rpg. Could not stop playing until I finished.

Incredible.

The original NWN was my first taste of the D&D engine: therefore, I did not know what to expect. Now, 3 years since my first time playing the original NWN, I have purchased the pen and paper version of D&D, both expansions of NWN, and stand here a changed man. This compilation is the ultimate NWN experience, and a must-own for anyone who has wondered if D&D was for them.

I actually don't play this game, I bought it for my brother. It seems to be an awesome role-playing game, I'm just not into that kind of thing. The graphics are awesome, and the music and sound is EXTREMELY high quality. I have a low-end, ''integrated'' graphics card and everything still looks great. I can only imagine what it would look like on a Radeon or Geforce. One of the highlights I saw in the game is being able to build your own levels and scenarios, as well as characters. The levels my brother was making looked incredible, with doorways, caves, skeletons, lighting, even stepping into certain areas would take you into other non-connected areas, flawlessly (like a warp zone, if you will). If you're into this kind of game, I would highly recommend it.

This is a good game

The additional scenarios are very interesting and the game can really keep you involved.

I never guessed I'd be playing D&D on the PC!

After being a die-hard 'pencil & dice' D&D player/DM since first edition rules, I didn't think I'd ever find a game that would emulate the D&D experience to me with all the possibilities of a game that you and your friends created in your own minds. Then along came 'Neverwinter'! It has revolutionised my gaming experience, the pencil & dice have been put in mothballs for the time being. NWN is the best. Well done bioware!

great D&D based RPG

Neverwinter nights platinum is a great RPG for those who have either played D&D (dungeons and dragons) or for those who have a taste for story and character development. you play as a hero or villian of a selected class, race and alignment. all of these options have impact on character development, storyline, and the ability to interact with NPCs. The sound FX and music is very good with people shouting in the background, screams in the dungeons, and outstanding dialogue. You can manipulate the camera by zooming in and out very far or close and adjust the angle at which you view your character. combat is not a strong factor for this game but is exciting. you can move your character by clicking the mouse or "driving" the character with car like controls. graphics are also a plus. colorful, detailed, and full of NPCs. i highly recommend this to any fan of D&D or to any avid RPG fan
