The best I've seen for PC...

I should qualify my review by stating that I'm not a kid, and I wouldn't even attempt to play at the 'hard' skill levels...
...I downloaded the demo on a whim and I was hooked immediately. CofD takes the best from recent war films and gives you a chance to live it out on your pc. The game is split into three campaigns, one following an American soldier, then a British SAS soldier, then a Soviet grunt. The American campaign's early levels play like they were taken directly from Band of Brothers, the HBO miniseries and earlier book. The early Soviet levels feel like something directly out of Enemy at the Gates. I've never seen anything like this for pc. Particularly outstanding were a night battle to eliminate anti-aircraft batteries in France, and the multiple levels that took place in Stalingrad. Indeed, the Soviet levels are pretty incredible, with some of the best AI and squad level urban combat ever seen in a video game.
Regarding pure technical matters, I felt the graphics were exceptional, particulary the urban scenes. Frame rates and motion were about the smoothest I've ever seen, indeed smoother than Medal of Honor even with full effects. Also, I'm running a decent but not an incredible machine: 2.66ghz P4 with 1024MB RAM and 128MB Ati Ratheon 9000 video. Games usually run decently but not incredibly on my machine, but CofD was just incredible.
If you are in doubt, just download the demo and you'll be hooked... but in my opinion this is the best historical first person shooter game ever developed for PC. It was incredible.

Game of the Year 2003 ?

With the news of Half Life 2 and Doom 3 pushed back to 04, it just might be entirely possible.

This is the war game you have been waiting for.
This game captures as close as possible on a video game of what it is really like ( I know I am a war vet of Afghanastan and Iraq )

Graphics are excellent, and this is not a game that will run sluggish with all graphic detail up, quite impressed. Sound is the best I have heard in awhile, you CANNOT play this game at night with a roomate sleeping in the next room, you must play this LOUD, and you WILL get the full effect. One last note about the sound, a surround sound system is a must for this game, if there are voices, bullets, bombs, etc. that are behind you, you will hear them behind you, also a subwoofer is supreme for the dropping bombs, mortars, grenades and such.

Any & every accolade you have heard about this game is true....believe the hype!

Only downside is length of 1P game, which I think is reversed by the fact that after you beat it, you will play it again, for the fact that there are very few scripts in the game.............translation, the same things dont keep happening, i.e. the same guy doesnt get shot in the same place everytime you play a mission, which to me for that one fact sets this game far away from others.

This game will have you literally ducking your head in front of your computer screen from the buzzing bullets going past your head.......it is that real.

This game has single handedly taken my attention away from my consoles back to my PC. Finally.

War Games

I've played many war and military games through the years and I have to say I am very impressed with Call of Duty. It is a World War 2 FPS (First Person Shooter) that places you on the battlefields of three different nations. A United States Private, A British Seargent, and a Russian foot soldier. The first two campaigns, American and British, take place just hours before Operation Overlord commences. On both of these you are part of Airborne units dropping behind the enemy line. On the Russian Campaign you wade across a river to the ruined city of Stalingrad. This is the widest section of the campaign, as you get to fight in the city streets as an infantryman, then help a squad as a sniper in the city, and even later become a tank commander. The battlefield action is simply amazing. The sounds of bullets, tanks, and teammates and enemies scream orders and take cover. The background music that will play, as in the charge into red square in Stalingrad, truly adds to the amazing cinematic effect of the experience. I believe the game is run on the Quake 3 engine, which while slightly outdated, it holds very smoothly and will not dissapoint but the pickiest of players.
But of course there are a few bugs and problems that appear here and there. While you are in and act as a squad you often times find yourself taking out most of the enemies if you want to keep the game rolling. Also after a few days of playing and when you find yourself looking for a difficult challenge the ai takes cover half exposed at times. I also found the damage system quite annoying. While it takes near 20 bullets to kill an allied soldier, the enemy can take 4 or 5 bullets and get right back up and fight you off if given proper time. There are few actual glitches and bugs that I've seen as of yet, just an occasional foot or gun through solid objects like doors and windows.
The only other problem I have with this game is the allmost horrificly short campaign. I beat the game well within 15-20 hours of playing time on the medium difficulty. The answer to this length is the great replayability, trying different tactics and difficulties is you can take the experience online with others on the maps copying missions from the single player mode. (small tweaks here and there). There are 5 different modes of player including deathmatch, team deathmatch, behind enemy lines, retrieval, and search and destroy. This can test your skills to the max (Unless your our, or are fighting "Rambos". They are the players who follow much of any tactics and run into every room blasting away ammo.)
But overall this game is definately the best WW2 FPS I have played and I can say allmost anyone who plays this game will fall in love with it for a long time to come.

Better than Medal of Honor

Call of Duty is a lot of fun, and very challenging, infact it's right up there with Medal of Honor. I love playing this game, you can play as the Russians, the Brittish or the Americans.

This gaem gives you a real sense of what war was like for these 3 groups, and allows you to use their tactics to destroy the enemy.

Along with combat fighting you can drive tanks and other vehicles, it's all about killing the enemy in any way you can. It's also just a lot of fun to drive around in a Tank.

You also go around with troops and in groups, and they actually kill enemies. Unlike MoH where you have 1 or 2 companions that do nothign but make you an easy target.

The only pitfall of this game is the graphics, because they are kind of bland, i mean just the bear essentials. This is one area where MoH Tops it.

Overview:

Fun- 15/10 a lot of fun to play, and the other vehicles give it an extra zing.

Gameplay- 10/10 just like the MoH, only better.

Difficulty- 10/10 a lot of fun, and still challenging.

Graphics- 9/10 probably the weakest point of the whole game, it could be a whole lot better, and this game would be untouchable.

Overall-44/40

This game is a HEAP of fun to play. It's worth every penny.

TRY THIS GAME OUT.

Adrenaline-Charged Slice of History Experience

This game is head and shoulders above any battle sim ever written. It represents a significant improvement over the Medal of Honor series. For me, MoH games are much better as a multiplayer experience- provided you can find a decent bunch to play with. CoD's single player experience is awesome- reminiscent of the thrill of a good MoH multiplayer round. You are immersed in a gaming experience rich in graphics, sound and realistic play action. I was completely absorbed, playing until 430AM one evening. (My wife really regreted giving me this gift). You can tell that many of the MoH development team was on this project as there are some critical improvements in playability such as sighting and melee attacks for all weapons. I did miss the ability to "cook off" grenades though. The computer enemies and teammates are still not quite as savvy as human competition, but there are substantial improvements here too. Squadron members harass you if you do things incorrectly, and enemies dart about and hide when detected. The game does play a bit easier than MoH programs, but this is partly the result of a more realistic gaming experience. If you approach a situation cautiously and with strategy, you do not get mowed down instantly. This is unlike some battle sims where you have to play a scene three or four times to memorize the "popout hotspots"- no such frustration with CoD. Do yourself a favor though and play the higher difficulty levels. "Greenhorn" is too easy for anyone.

The Russian Army experiences are arguably the best in the game- very innovative. These missions illustrate the horror of war, and the honor of courageous team play. (I know it's only a game-but this game makes you feel like you are participating in a momentous part of history).

Feel the Adrenaline rush. Experience the terrible horrors of modern war, and know the camaraderie that only soldiering can foster. If you do decide to experience the thrill of this game, please don't blaspheme and play online deathmatches with the software. That would be like listening to Mozart while watching porn.

How awesome this game is. the graphics are some of the best I have seen in a pc game. The sound is even better. The uniforms of the soldiers are accurate. The Peagasis bridge level is the most spectacular level in a game ever, in my opinion. Just get this game.

Call of Duty not quite a classic

Ok first the good...COD is without a doubt the most realistic depiction of WWII infantry combat ever put into a FPS game! It puts you in the boots of an infantryman in USA, UK, and USSR armies and makes you glad you didn't have to participate!

Now the bad...as far as the claim on amazon.com that your squadmates individual personalities come out in the game, yes and no. Yes they have personalities (ie. dialogue and actions they perform in game). No they do not ultimately affect the outcome of the game and in fact their actions are HIGHLY HIGHLY scripted, meaning if you play this game 100 times, their responses will be 100 out of 100 the same! This leads to a tremendously thrilling FIRST experience, and more and more boring and tedious follow up experiences

Multiplayer...above average though it plays similarly to RTCW and MOH. Worth having if you are into that sort of thing, not missable if you aren't.

Summation...awesome SP experience the first time around, but you probably won't be playing this one over and over!!

Same old tired game

While this game had decent scripted scenarios, this basically led to zero replay ability. Which wouldn't be so bad if the game were longer, but as it stands, the average completion time is about 10 hours or less. For my $50, this is by far not enough entertainment. And if you say that there is a bright side with the multi-player, I saw, play Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and you'll get a visually similar game, with tons of better game play. In the end, a game like Medal of Honor is much better than this, even if it is older. I was looking forward to the storming of Stalingrad level, and needless to say, it couldn't hold a candle to the Omaha beach invasion from MoHAA. There was nothing stellar about this game, nothing that made it stand out from the crowd at all. In some respects, the I found the story of RtCW much more intriguing, even if it was fiction. Call of Duty is the same tired formula of FPS's that everyone's used before, nothing new here.

Realistic WW2 First Person Shooter

Although I do not own this game, I play it with my friend. Anyway, this game has everything you'd want in a WW2 game. It has realistic battles, realistic weapons, and it seems to be an over all good deal.
I don't like most first person shooters, but I own a lot, and this game is a good 1st person shooter. The guns act like they really would. The Thompson, for instants, bucks and there is a lot of muzzle flash. You can almost feel the vibrations through your mouse.
This game also has realistic soldiers. You can play with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Soldiers also have realistic ranks.
Overall, I give this a 10 in detail, a 9 in educational value, a 10 in fun, and a 10 in realisticness, if that's even a word.

BEST MULTIPLAYER EVER

This game is one of the best games I have played so far. It is a first person shooter with plenty of levels and challenging too. Once you beat single player you don't wont to throw all your skills that you gained from that away. Take those skills to multiplayer where the real challenge is.

The good thing about multiplayer is that it never gets boring. Every time you play it's different.I play on multiplayer all the time. There are lots of levels to play from and you can play with up to 60 people on one server but usually it only reaches 40 people. There are many different types of multiplayer games and levels for this game. (sometimes look at the corner of your multiplayer screen because sometimes there are update things where you can get better levels and types of multiplyer games.

"Deathmatch"-You only try to keep yourself alive by shooting anyone you see walk by, but always watch your back.

"Team Deathmatch"- Same as deathmatch just now your on a team and you go after the other team. Takes teamwork for your team to win but fun and challenging.

"Behind Enemy Lines"- Object of this type of multiplayer is to get most points by staying an allie the longest. If there are 20 germans on one server there will only be about 5 allies, and what the germans do is seek out and find the allies. The german who kills an allie becomes an allie, and the allie that is killed becomes a german. You get about 1 point every ten seconds you stay alive as an allie.

"Search and Destroy"- This is my least favorite out of all types. Your on either allies or germans and the object of this is to set bombs on the other teams tank. The only bad thing is that once your killed you have to wait till the bomb goes off and blows up the tank or all the people on one team are dead. This may take a while because some people are slow and dont move much and don't get killed for a while.

"Retrieve"- I never really played this type. You have to retrieve some documents from the other team and has same concept of seek and destroy once your dead have to wait till your whole team is dead or soemone retrieves the documents.

There are more types of multiplayer types then what I wrote but these are the most played on the game. This is still a great game to play by yourself but its one of the best multiplayer games.
