Monstrous disappointment

It's probably my fault but I was hugely disappointed in this game. I was hoping for something more along the lines of Ico since the makers of this game also made that one. Ico was one of the best games I've played on the PS2, up there with one of my all time favorites. A beautitful game filled with challenging puzzles and tons of emotion and atmosphere. For Collosus They kept the beautiful, artistic graphics and same look and feel yet dumped everything else. All that's left is riding around on a horse with absolutely nothing to do in between fighting the collosi. No I'm not looking for wave after wave of meaningless monsters and fights. This is an unfinished game. I really believe the developers started with this outline but couldn't finish perhaps because their ideas were too grandiose. This is a demo.
The horse is an excellent idea and everything about is well done so it's a shame it goes to waste. Fighting each collosus is interesting and fun, but after 5 or 6 of them it's gets very repetitive. You spend time and energy finally figuring out their patterns and weak spots, which is good in itself, but you get nothing for your effort except to do it all over again.
Come on let's stop with all the way overboard rave reviews here. Someone said it's like "Ico meets Metroid Prime." Stop it, it's nothing like Metroid Prime and all the stuff that made Ico good was taken out. I know I'm going to get a lot of negative votes for this review but somebody has to step up and give an alternate opinion and warn Ico players before they waste their money.
The bottom line: Ico was a fantastic, once in a lifetime game filled with umatched atmosphere, emotion and gameplay. Surely something close to Ico 2 would be made right? No, Ico didn't sell all that well. Water it down, take out the complexity and puzzles. Fight big monsters. Ride horse. There ya go, Shadow has been a best seller. What a disgrace.

first of all, the sword-light thing kind of confused me.. but once i got the hang of it, it was pretty cool. you hold your sword up and the beam directs you to your next enemy, and you ride there on horseback. however, i got bored of this game really fast (after beating the first enemy). it's just not the game for me.. i do respect it, though (most games i don't respect at all). the story is great, the graphics are great, and it's an interesting idea. but i had more fun playing spartan: total warrior killing hundreds of enemies. this is supposed to be kind of a puzzle game... if i wanted to do a puzzle, i'd pull out the new york times. but if you're the type who doesn't mind sitting back and thinking about how to kill some giant before you start swinging and doesn't find that frustrating, this is the game for you.
This Game Is Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok i have no idea were to start this game is so good. The graphics are great, the gameplay is awesome, and the game is really long. Although the controls take a little getting used to, it only took me 15 minutes to learn them. The game may look really slow when your watching it. But when your playing it, its pretty fast paced, because you have to watch your stamina bar. The stamina bar is the least of your worries in a battle though. You should really be watching out for huge bolts of lightning.
I highly reccomend this game, its extreamly fun, and it doesent get old, although it can get frustrating at times. but you can always look up stuff in stratagey guids incase you cant find out how to do something. 5 OUTA 5
Beautiful Game Even though I havent beaten it

Im going to say before I start I havent beaten the game so It might get like really awful later on.
But from what ive played its awsome. The graphics are like a work of art (though not like perfect or something) The gameplay is wonderful. The music is the best i have ever herd in a game. (buy the soundtrack) The only problem is the camera (newbie gamers you prolly wont know what im talking about and hardcores ya of coarse you will) The angle is a problem and its hard to position it in a good angle (even if you hit R2 which is straight forward) But other than that its really good.
The Controls are another problem when your on your feet its not bad (it does have a control configuration by the way) but when your on your horse its a diffrent story. The horse's problems are as follows:
1. The left and right. When you turn the camera to face your horse the left and right are backwards.
2. Going faster and slower. When you want to speed up you are supposed to hit X but I keep finding myself hitting X rapidly and still staying at the same speed which is not very fast.
3. On foot when you call your horse. He doesnt come very fast (especially when your near a colossus and you need to get away quick).
4. Getting on. When you are right next to your horse you have to press triangle to get on but your horse cant be moving and you have to be right next to it.
Thats all I have to say bad about the horse.
Another bad thing is the map and finding things. When you want to go to a Colossus you have to use your sword(by holding down circle and a bright light comes and shows you which direction the Colossus is.) But the light goes through wallsand cliffs and its really hard to find it. Plus the map is hard to read and its in black and white so it doesnt really help.
I did find a colour map on the internet (just google it) and that helped. A lot.
This next paragraph is about the rating:
I know I was the one who wrote the disscussion asking about why it was rated T. But that was before I got the game. So now im gonna answer my own question.
OK the ESRB rated it T for blood and Fantasy Violence. And Im gonna have to agree with them. BUT that doesnt mean its that bad. OK the fantasy violence part is less than most games ive played (my friend even thinks Lego Star Wars is more Violent than this but thats because it has more fighting but this is lets say goryier) The only Violence is really just
a) stabbing the Colossus
b) killing birds flying around the land (optional)
c) killing lizards runnin around the land (optional)
d) after you kill a Colossus it dying and something else (see Spoilers)
The blood is just when you stab a Colossus a bunch of black stuff comes out of the wound and it lookds like blood. The only gross thing about it is that it gushes out like a fountain.
****SPOILERS****
The only spoilers I have to say is that after you kill a colossus that a bunch of tenticals come out hit you. You fall to the ground and you see a little cut scene and you wake up and boom your streangth meter is stronger.
Oh and the other spioler I have to say is that the reason you have to kill the Colossus is that to wake up this woman who is dead and the Roman gods tell you to kill all the Colossus. When the Roman gods talk you see its a made up language so it sounds kinda creepy like a bunch of people talking at once in gibberish.
**** End Spoilers ****
OK. The only other thing I have to say is that is a little history about the game.
1. It was originally supposed to be called NICO
2. Its the prequal to ICO (duh)
3. If you look at the original game poster it shows more than one person fighting a Colossus (two-player) that would be nice.
Ok ive been talking long enough.
Please dont say un-kind comments about my review.
Peace Out

The Low Down:
No little peons or mini-bosses. You are sent out to hunt 16 Collusi to bring your lovely lady back from the dead. That's it. And wow is it a spectacular ride.
Story: Nice and no messing around.
Animation: Breathtaking. Honestly.
Originality: Imagine a Tetris you can kill. How's that?
Play: The first eight are daunting; but not really that bad. Then 9 Steps in. Imagine a game set on Medium difficulty and half way through shooting up to God mode. Very Unforgiving.
Possibly The Best Game Ever Created!

There are no words to describe this amazing and wonderful experience/game. Basically, you are a person who needs to kill 16 Colossi to bring a woman(your love?) back from death. There is a different and unique way to kill every colossus. This game is simply brilliant.
Graphics: 9.5/10
Very nice and smooth graphics, hardly any glitches or anything of the sort. The scenery is beautiful. Just looking around for the colossi is fun. The colossi themselves are just so majestic; the game really displays their size and power.
Fun: 10/10
Though at times it can get hard, this game is VERY enjoyable. You can always stay stuck to the screen because you have to use your brain so much. However, be careful! If you are not a patient person and gets mad over games, this is not a game for you. The colossi can get pretty tough to beat.
Replay Value: 9/10
Every time you replay the game, you can go in different modes (time modes, hard, etc.), and every time you win in these different modes, the different "cheats" you get. The only reason why its not a perfect 10/10 is because some of these monsters is really hard, and killing them all over again can get frusterating.
Sound: 10/10
The sound for this game is simply astounding. It adds to the power and the great dignity of the colossi when you are fighting them. The sound also seems to match with your moods. When you first see your colossus opponent, the sound matches it. When you are so sad when you see the colossus die, the sound goes along with it.
Overall: 10/10
Great game. There's no reason to rent it first, just buy it. Its fun, extremely enjoyable, and addictive. You have to use your mind a lot though, adding even more to the greatness and pure brilliance of this game.
A stunning and unique accomplishment

This game is one of a kind, totally unique, and a worthy addition to anyone's game library. I really knew very little about it when I bought it other than the premise of one very little guy versus very, very big giant monsters. Since I love giant monsters and the idea sounded promising I went ahead and gave it a shot.
I was not disappointed. Far from it. This game is amazingly fun. It's like playing a ninja versus godzilla. And somehow the ninja wins! Armed with only with his sword, arrows, and ability to hold on tight when a monster tries to shake him off like a pesky flea, our hero goes toe-to-toe with huge (and I do mean HUGE) monsters in his epic quest.
Gameplay is solid. Graphics are beautiful. Especially when you're hanging on a giant bird's wings as it soars over a misty lake. Or when you stand atop a giant's head. Or you run between a dinosaurish monster's legs.
However, the game isn't perfect. The frame rate on the animation can be low and the landscape, while beautiful, is prone to popup. Also, it can be a bit tiresome having to ride a long way to find your next opponent. Some people won't be able to get past this, but for me the game's unique gameplay makes up for any flaws it might have.
One warning: The game has a puzzle aspect that might be frustrating to players who want instant gratification in their action. But there's always hints offered from above to help you out. So stick with it.
After all, whoever said slaying mountains was easy?
Stab the Secret Magical Weak point

Shadow of the Colossus is a truly awe-inspiring game with a single weakness, much like the collosal enemies you face in it.
The amount of emotion this game evokes is impressive. I have never been so attached to an non-player animal as the horse Agro in this game.
The pristine beauty of this untouched landscape is wonderful, and the battles with the collossi are exciting, if sometimes repetitive. Really, though, there are enough variations that the basic goal is still fun 16 fights later.
The one drawback? Controls.
In Ico (and this is a valid comparison, because much of the same design philosophy went into SotC) the controls were exceedingly simple. Jump, let go, action, fight, and call/hold hands. There were camera controls, but the camera was so well designed that they were only needed maybe twice in the entire game.
Shadow of the Colossus tried to make things simple. It has the same controls for jumping, fighting, action. The call command (this time for the horse) is switched with the "let go" command, which is now "hang on." Sorry if I'm getting technical--my point is that it is evident from this one-to-one correlation that a strategy of simple controls was what they were shooting for.
The problem is the camera isn't something you can ever forget about, especially while you are doing anything else. If it were only an exploration thing, that would be fine. However, fighting a colossus and keeping your orientation requires some stout controller-wrangling on par with most console First-Person Shooters (which by and large have overly-complex controls). The result of this deficiency is a game that is much less friendly to non-gamers.
That's the real problem with SotC, in my opinion. I's a fantastic game, provided you ante up with the prerequisite years of videogame training in order to enjoy it without worrying about the controls. If you're looking for an emotionally involving play experience without all the complicated control mechanics that are all-too-prevalent in today's games, you would do better with Ico. But if you can get past the controls and actually interface with this masterwork, it is worth the effort.
Spectacular game.

This game is almost perfectly done in almost every way. The graphics, considering this is the PS2, are astounding. It's not so much that they are high resolution or anything, it's all just so absolutely well done! Everything has an emotional/dramatic quality to it. The animations in particular of your character and his horse are amazing. The horse behaves like an actual horse. Your character moves like an actual person moves. It's the little nuances that count. And the colossi...wow, are they ever amazing. The big ones are truly BIG and evoke a true feeling of...uhhh, hugeness. And more than a few of them are truly challenging and FUN to fight. This isn't just a matter of grabbing onto them and then stabbing them. As you progress, each colossus presents its own unique challenge. Sometimes they have a weak spot you have to get to somehow...sometimes you have to use your environment to weaken them, sometimes you just plain have to jump on. I will admit a few of the colossi got very frustrating they were so challenging, but it just leaves you feeling all the more satisfied and rewarded when you finally do take them down.

Simply put, this is everything a video game should be and what all other video games should aspire to. Getting involved in this game yields an experience that is difficult to comprehend, much less describe. It is an action game, but to say that it is merely an action game does not do it justice in any way. It has far more to do with emotion; isolation, empathy, love. However, these themes are presented so abstractly and beautifully that they never feel heavy-handed or forced. It is an altogether incredible work of art that will challenge you to discover new thoughts, feelings, and ideas you never dreamed possible in a video game.
